Let's fly an IFR flight using only VORs. We'll fly KORF to W78 along this route: V1 DRONE V266 SBV. We introduced this flight in an earlier video on KZfaq, as part of the complete IFR Ground School which you can check out at flight-insight.com/ifr
We'll use our VORs, estimated time enroute, and cross radials to navigate this route without GPS!

Please fly the vor's more often. I am a VOR FAA technician. I love working on the older equipment it keeps us sharp for the newer solid state equipment we are getting for us pilots. I hope all my hard work doesn't go to waste.

I’m in Seattle. Is there a way to go check out one of the VORTAC or VOR out here? SEA, OLM and PAE are all on airport property :( PAE is on top one of the buildings and it’s out of service right now :( But the HQM VORTAC is on the Ocean Shores Peninsula, I wonder if it’s possible to visit? I’m training out of KRNT by the way :)

Another great video! I enjoy practicing VOR navigation in the sim. Navigation is a large part of the fun of flying to me. Its quite amazing to me how a relatively old technology is still widely used today.

Might be “old school”, but VORs are the FAA backup plan in case of a GPS outage. So, flying VOR airways is a skill we should maintain. Great video, good review. I plan on recommending to my students

In Europe, especially Belgium, GPS are not allowed during the the PPL checkride. So navigating either with visual ref points, VOR and/or NDBs is a must have in the competencies that the student pilot needs to master.

The FAA's decommissioning hundreds of VORs to save $, though, with the next big batch going dark in 2025. They say they'll be keeping a small number alive where it makes sense, though it'll be sparse. Eventually they'll be as rare as NDB beacons

@@JasonFarrell true, but the VORs that remain are being replaced with systems that have longer range. Both the Low and High will have a 70 nm range for aircraft at least 5000 feet AGL. Some are in operation now. IFR low charts now indicate the new systems that support the MON transition. I make sure cover this topic on every IPC. Want all students to understand what will remain if DoD takes down the GPS system in emergencies.

WOW That's the only way to navigate back in my day. GPS was just coming of age when i Stopped flying as PIC in July '96. I did use LORAN back in the 80's & Early 90's. Loran was useless in weather. When I started Flying IFR there were many NON-Radar environment areas and subsequently a lot of mental gymnastics with times an mandatory reporting points & times to next Reporting point. No GPS/Ipads, Just a Enroot Chart in your lap, watch, your Flight plan on a Kneeboard, Don't for get the extra pens you were sure to drop one on the cockpit floor too. OH Only one Aircraft I ever flew had a GOOD working autopilot. Every thing back then was hand flown. Hope you know your Needle, Ball,& Airspeed Tequenick & Lost Comm Ruel's when sollid with 200 & 1/2 and you break an alternator belt.

This is how I learned to navigate IFR. It’s also why I rarely flew “hard IFR” single pilot.

If the VOR station is on the same side as CDI deflection with a FROM indication, you are not yet at the intersection. If is opposite of the station location, you have past it. If using an HSI and you set your course to the radial being flown, this case the point of the course is 130. The tail will be to the station and course deviation will indicate correctly . The to/from arrow however always point to the station. In this case the tail of the course indicator. That still tell us we are headed to the station. Slightly confusing so just place the course arrow on 310 and use it like the old OBS.

I tried doing an IFR flight via victor airways, and I filed as such. But ATC saw my /G and in flight gave me an amended route direct to a GPS fix completely bypassing the victor airway. Is there a way to communicate to ATC that I actually want to fly the victor airway? When I'm filing can I remove the /G in my airplane configuration?

One thing you forgot was to LOG the VOR test in the Airplanes log book if not done in the Previous 10 hours. I think that's still in the FAR's That was one of the first things Art Zander my FAA Designated Examiner expected me to CHK/LOG. So happens the MWC VOR 108.6 was on the field so I checked no.1 VOR against No.2 VOR for less than 4 degrees difference. Funny thing every thing worked fine until I radioed the tower for a take off clearance and Nothing. Flashed the landing light at the tower and they gave us light signals back to parking. Turns out there was a BAD MASTER Radio switch. So took my Check ride in a 172 with single navcom and ADF Dis have a marker beacons And GS/

Simulators replicate GPS flying reasonably well as there's very little real world inaccuracies and winds are automatically compensated. VOR flying in real world vs a simulator is going to be considerably different. Although within the tolerances of the equipment involved, accuracy varies considerably from one VOR to the next and varying winds will make your timing exercise much less exact.

You ask why one would do this? For me, it's because the plane I fly doesn't have a GPS. Secondarily, it's good to be proficient in case the GPS system goes down either on your plane or with the satellites.
