I installed a new entry door on my house and posted a video of it on my social media. Then I got a call from a guy who needed a new door. Then that led to two more doors. The doors just keep coming. The clients are all in my trusted circle, because they're from my social media friends. I'm finding my most effective advertising is just posting a short Instagram/Facebook video that shows what I'm doing that day. And I explain some of the details in the video, like saying I shot 3" screws through the hinges, frame and strike plate to make the door more secure against break-ins, and people appreciate that information and see you as someone who is knowledgeable and willing to do a quality job. Maybe this might help somebody. I know I learn a lot from this channel that helps me. Keep hammering

While installing door casing a couple weeks ago, I had an 18 gauge nail break in half and ricochet (probably hit a framing nail). It came back and whacked me in the orbital bone within 1/2 inch of my eye. Since this incident, I always wear eye protection (The girly skirt of course is still optional). I admit the risk is low with new wood frame-ups, but I would caution anyone to consider the risks in cases where you may not know what's underneath the material you are nailing.

@@1stFlyingeagle But did you die? What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger. I guess, that’s what my dad used to tell me every time I got broken bones, stitches, staples, and even surgeries a couple times. Dad didn’t believe a guy could feel pain or avoid it. He doesn’t anymore for some reason, he says boy put your safety glasses on, you’re going to regret that one day. Lol

Rather than replace one of the hinge screws with a long screw, I like to one hinge at a time, remove all 3 hinge screws from the jamb, install a long screw through the jamb behind the hinge, then screw the hinge back in. It helps with my OCD over having one hinge screw that will likely not match the other 2.
@Twins22R
@Twins22R 3 жыл бұрын
Good to go through the top hinge with the long screw because this one has the most stress on it and pine door jambs don't hold the screw forever. After that wood strips out, you'll be putting a long screw in eventually.

So, you are saying it is not a gun show? A trick that another carpenter showed me was to use a long level and put enough shims on the hinge side to get that straight before putting the frame in the opening. Then you could attach that and focus on getting the clearances on the other side. They were in the business of building houses and they felt that was a faster way to get the alignment.

Every door I’ve found needs a 38 1/4” x 82 rough opening or a 34 1/4” rough opening. Mine is neither. It used to be an exterior door and they framed it in. The doorway is 9 1/2” deep Crazy. The wall is so thick because it’s double thick brick walls with plaster .
