In this video you can see what the guitar looks like with the grain filler and how to do remove the excess filler to leave only the necessary to fill the grain.

I see you're using West system epoxy which is a product I am very familiar with. That waxy or oily feel that the epoxy has after it has cured is called Amin blush. As the epoxy cures it migrates to the surface cutting off the resin from the air, which allows the epoxy to cure all the way to the surface. Without it the epoxy would remain sticky. It is also the component which is clogging your sandpaper. After your epoxy has cured, scrub the surface with a green Scotch-Brite pad and clear water. And wipe down with a damp rag. Now when you sand, your paper will no longer load up. Also West systems makes a clear hardener to add to their 105 resin which is crystal clear.

Hi Pablo. Many thanks for your amazing series. Your attention to detail is wonderful. Question: have you experimented with CA glue for the pore-fill? Using a product like Glueboost Fill & Finish Pro with their Gluedry Accellerator could vastly shorten the time required to wait for the material to dry, and it claims to be crystal clear. What would be the cons?

Hello Pablo, thank you for the video series. Question on this one: I notice you were sanding over both the rosewood and inlay at the same time. Are you trying to evenly sand through the resin layer on both the rosewood and the inlay? If so, how do you keep the rosewood dust from contaminating the inlay? I saw in the next video that you seal the inlay with shellac, but I'm assuming you have to get down to bare wood first right?
@redkitekk
@redkitekk 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew. Once you clean the inlay you can seal it with a bit of shellac and then apply resin to the timber that need the grain filled. When you cut back the resin you might get your inlay messy but you need to cut back to remove all the resin to the point that you only leave what is inside the grain. I would use resin in the white inlay as well. Once all the excess rein is removed you can use a very fine scraper to clean up the white lines if they are still a bit dirty. You might open the gran again as you crape clean the white parts in which case the grain here will have to be filled as you polish. I would also try to put some resin in an of cut to check that the grain lines don’t become dark when it dries in the wood even though the resin is clear. Just to check that you like the results before doing it for good in your work piece.

Thank you for an invaluable series of videos about French polish. I applied 3 coats, all pores were filled. Now that I’m cutting back the resin, I got a little bit carried away and there are a couple of small areas of the back were the pores opened. Would you just skip those and go on? If not, any advice on how to deal with those areas to fill the pore again? Best regards, Francisco Perez
@redkitekk
@redkitekk Жыл бұрын
Hi Francisco, you don’t need to go back to fill the grain in that area, just carry on polishing as normal and later on if the grain is still open you can use a bit of pumice powder to fill in the grain that didn’t fill in the first place. I have another video on KZfaq about how to fill the grain with pumice, have a look and apply that technique to the area you need to do. Also, just in case you’re interested I have a complete guitar making course available on www.onlineguitarmakingcourse.com

Pablo, thanks for the serie - looking forward for the rest videos. I have one question - why don't you using masking tape for neck heel to avoid thos thin areas without resin? I didn;t try this approach, but as I understand resin behaviour quick removing of tape (before resin dry out, after remove all extra resin from sides) should remove all bumps in the corner... Also masking tape will save time and nerves while finishing grain filling in the heel area...
@redkitekk
@redkitekk 5 жыл бұрын
The reason why I don't use tape is that the resin will seep under the tape and before you realise you will have more resin in the areas you want to protect deceiving the point. If you don't have tape while you apply the resin and get a bit in the wrong place you can wipe it clean before it penetrates too deeply. In any case you have to try it for yourself and do what works for you

Since the neck is also made from cedar, is that the reason you are not filling open grain with the epoxy resin? What is the neck was made of another kind of wood? Would you use resin to fill the grain?
@redkitekk
@redkitekk 5 жыл бұрын
Andy Sparks you could fill the grain with a grain filler of the right color or with resin, the reason why I don’t is because it is very easy to do it as you polish as the grain is not too open, In any case you have to fill the grain in the neck. Bare in mind that the cedar used in the neck is very different to the cedar used in the soundboard which doesn’t require any grain filling at all as the grain is very closed. If you use a different timber for the neck, it will depend on its type of grain to know if it needs filling or not.

i don't know what I did wrong, I usually use the finishing resin from z-poxy but it shrinks over time, and I try this one you use, it looks that it doesn't shrink as mush but it took mush long time to dry, , I left overnigth and in the morning it stiil was soft... I have done exactly you do here... my sho is most of the time 21 to 23 degrees and about 50‰ humidity... is possible that the resin is not ok?
@redkitekk
@redkitekk Жыл бұрын
West system tends to feel a little greasy to the touch once dry. As you cut back you will get to hard resin. If this is not the case you might have added a little too much hardener to the mix. This makes the rein a bit rubbery. The mix has to be very accurate and in case of doubt a little less hardener than the recommended. I hope this helps

Hello master guitar Builder I've had to put 3 coats of resin On My Guitar I sanded it down now and it's just a few small spots where I'm getting a little pinkish color. Can I go ahead with the next step or do I have to put more resin on to carry On To The Next Step. And also do I tape off where the pickguard goes on the soundboard?
@redkitekk
@redkitekk 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, to decide if you can move on to the next step you need to see if all or most of the grain is filled, if not you need to work on that. If the grain is full then you can start polishing. You don't need to cover the area where the pick guard goes, you polish the hole soundboard and when the polish is dry you glue on the pick guard in place.

I'm very surprised you're using resin. That's the stuff they use to make surfboards. Doesn't it adversely affect the resonance of the box? The violin guys use diluted hot hide glue - have you tried that? Looking forward to the polishing videos.
@thibaultjabergguitars3598
@thibaultjabergguitars3598 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think that the epoxy can have a negative impact on the sound. If anything it could even improve it because the epoxy is a very hard glue that can make the wood have a more crystal clear tap tone. In violin making they don't use any open pored woods like rosewood so sizing the wood with hide glue is enough. A lot of people use pumice and shellac to fill the pores of rosewood but that takes a lot more time to do.

Do you scuff / level between coats of the resin? How long do you wait in between putting down the coats of epoxy? I’m currently pore filling my mahogany / rosewood build using zpoxy finishing resin and it’s been difficult to build up the coats. But I’m sanding between each coat. Do you recommend sanding between coats or no?
@redkitekk

I have never used zpoxy. I use west system. I do two coats, I wait overnight to do the second coat and I don’t do any sanding in between.

@@redkitekk thanks Pablo, zpoxy is supposedly quite similar to west systems. Zpoxy is said to be a little more forgiving for beginners by being easier to sand & requiring a less strict mixing ratio, but it has a slight amber color to it (which has already stained my nice white purfling more than I had hoped 😩)
