When you start your cake journey, it’s just exciting to make a tasty cake and creamy buttercream from scratch. But soon, it becomes just as important to nail those sharp edges on your homemade cake. While it’s totes possible to do this with just a scraper and some patience, acrylic cake discs make the process quicker and easier!
For this 3 layer 6 inch cake, I'm using a 6.25 inch acrylic cake disc. This gives me the right amount of buttercream on the sides of my cake, but if you like THICK layers of frosting, you could always go up to the 6.5 inch disc.

You're very welcome! And thank you for your kind words. I hope this tutorial helps you out. Cake discs are a great way to frost cakes, but they can be super tricky until you get the hang of them. Luckily, that doesn't take too long!

I'm in the uk. We don't have press and seal here, what can I use instead?

Hmm, I'm not sure what options there are. In the US, there isn't anything similar to Press N Seal. It's pretty unique because it sticks to itself almost like an adhesive, but can be adjusted. Cling wrap doesn't work, at least in my experience. You'll need a food safe wrap that can be wrapped tightly around the disc without slipping around. If you do find an alternative, please let me know.

can you use the disks on icing as well as butter cream?

You can use these discs with ganache, American buttercream (traditional frosting/ icing), and even meringue buttercream (Swiss and Italian). I don't think this would work with a whipped cream, but I don't know for sure.

The ones I used in this video are from www.cakesafe.com, but you can also find the discs on Amazon (amzn.to/3Mez3nA). I've used the 4.25 inch discs from Amazon on my mini cakes and they worked great!
