Haitians have a fritter dish called accra, l but we add cod to it but not so much scotch bonnet. These are the typical ingredients. 1 lb malanga (root vegetable) 1 c black eyed peas (not dried) 1 tsp salt to taste 1 tsp black pepper to taste 1 scallion 1 shallot or 1/2 onion 1 clove garlic 1/4 green bell pepper 1 scotch bonnet pepper (habanero pepper) 1 egg beaten 1 tsp flour 1/2 tsp baking powder 2 c vegetable oil Its so nice to see how connect we still are to the motherland.

My aunt makes the best akara. They always come out a similar shape and I'm always in awe. Perfectly cooked and all. I don't know how she does it. It's like she puts a mold around them to make them come out the same shape.I know she doesn't but wow. I'm going to try your way. It's been long since I've made proper akara, ok I always made horrible akara lol. Never proper, but hopefully by paying close attention to heat of oil and putting it on medium it will be better I think I'm going to make roasted plantain and akara today. Simple and delicious.

Chimjim89 ! Wow! .. Straight to the kitchen. That is the spirit. If I can do it .. then you can. As you said, pay attention to your oil and dont make your akara blend running, its very simple to make. I am sure you will enjoy both.

I made Akara foe the first time and what delicious disater! had I read the comments and not used can beans which I rarely use they may worked out better. because I am not one to waste, Upon adding a 1tbspn flour I managed to get some mushy seriously dark akara cakes. I enjoyed them with sliced tomato. next time dry beans soaked then follow your instructions. rotfl! I want to impress my Nigerian auntie (a super awesome senior I have adopted in my life from my volunteer work). thanks for sharing

I have made this a couple of times I put crayfish in the batter though I don't eat out of restaurants for lots of reasons that is why I collect recipes and pin them to Pinterest a lot easier then actually printing recipes I was cooking German food first because my parents came to USA from Germany then I learned how to cook American dishes that is popular in the southern part of USA btw they are of African origin even some are so narrow minded they won't admit it sadly I later married a Pakistani and can cook better then he can he knows it too I even make Mexican and Puerto Rican dishes too and I love Chinese food I have a friend irl who is from Cameroon and her auntie makes best puff puff and was telling me how to make it and I tried Ethiopian food and love it so much I started making it too I always had a lifelong curiosity of what people in other cultures ate

Here in Brazil (bahia) this is a traditional food and is called acarajé, we split in half and stuffed with vatapá, caruru and pepper, the acarajé pasta has a harder consistency and we fry it in palm oil. Thanks for the video make more traditional foods from mother africa.

You can see why your Akara is not round and looked unattractive. After soaking and peeling off the shaft from the beans, you will need to soak again in water for about 20 minutes. This allows the beans to be very soft and easy to blend (You do not need to put any water again as you did). After blending the beans with all ingredients, you allow the blended bean to simmer for few more minutes and stir for few minutes before frying in low heat oil. Who wants to eat Akara with onions puffing out of the beans?

SimplyGladys you do not need to taste it before knowing that the salt is over much for the quantity of that akara. It catches salt easily. So you should be mindful of salt. Maggi is out of the question for akara biko.
