Hey there. Couldn’t agree more with your advice. The seizing issue is due to galvanic corrosion. Because you have stainless steel bolts (necessary for their high strength) going into aluminium in the presence of an electrolyte (salt water), the aluminium corrodes super fast. Any grease that inhibits the metal to metal contact reduces this big style. I’m using copper grease (just because I have it) but bicycle grease or anything will do it... 😎

For another purpose I needed some stainless steel bolts, and a store that sold these and other sailing gear had some rather gooey grease for putting on bolt threads to prevent galvanic decay.

I tried the fold the leading edge down flat method. It ended up with the connection for the one-pump to the strut sitting up at an odd angle, and a kink in the hose. You also get a twist when you roll it where the fabric transitions to the tips. I find a better way is to pat the leading edge tube so that it is flat with the seam lying down the middle of the fabric. The bladder is still nice and flat and untwisted and the one-pump fittings and tube sit flat with no sharp bends and no twists. When pumping up you need to pump at a leisurely pace (not slow, not quick) and watch the leading edge and the strut as it inflates. You should see the bladders inflate to nicely fill the spaces as you pump. The strut usually fills after the main bladder has a little pressure. If you see any voids inside the fabric and you're starting to get a little pressure inside then there's a chance the bladder has twisted or folded over. You need to start again, or even open the zip and fix it.

When we get a our paragliding wings wet with salt water, we must absolutely rinse them with fresh water and fully dry the wing before storage. If you let salt water evaporate on a nylon paraglider wing, the salt crystals form and are sharp and will literally cut the fibers over time and ruin the wing. Is this not the case with inflatable wings? I'm assuming in a marine environment, the high salt concentration will prevent mold growth and that's better than having dried salt crystals then?
@DamienLeroyYouTube
@DamienLeroyYouTube Жыл бұрын
Brandon, Well I think you are talking a very minimal times your paraglider getting wet in the salt water so I think you are doing the right thing. With Kites its likely the same you are saying but if you wash your kite ever day over and over it defiantly will wear your kite material down faster 100%. As far as salt cutting the fibers and ruining the kite, I personally have not really heard this maybe the material is a lot thicker on kites. Not sure but thank you for sharing.

Hi Damien could explain what fresh water do to the wing? Ciao
@DamienLeroyYouTube
@DamienLeroyYouTube 3 жыл бұрын
Really its just best to let your wing dry. All that happens with fresh water if left say in a ball or super wet, you can get mold, mildew and some satining on the fabric!
@alistairglen3537
@alistairglen3537 3 жыл бұрын
The freshwater supports various microscopic lifeforms (such as moulds and mildews) that don't seem to be present in saltwater in a form that would harm your wing/sail/kite. The saltwater will take slightly longer to dry than freshwater and salt crystals will form on the fabric but they aren't particularly harmful. However, once the sail/wing/kite is dry, give it a good shake to dislodge the, now dry, sand from the seams, webbing, etc. It's the abrasive action of the sand that will do far more harm than the salt on the fabric. When it comes to 'hardware', such as foils/extensions/bars/cleats, etc, always rinse with fresh water and lubricate in line with manufacturers' instructions. Damien is correct about creating a barrier between dissimilar metals (Aluminium/stainless) but the use of carbon also requires a barrier between it and stainless if it's going to be left assembled for any time (particularly in salt water). Use a product such as Tefgel or Duralac on the bolts to prevent galvanic action between the two materials.

Thanks a lot for the advice! Apart from maintenance on the land, during crashes & falls while foiling I wonder if there is any efficient way of preventing the risk that the foilwing destroys the kite? I have had good luck with climbing on top of the wing to hold it down, then using hands, feet, whatever to fend off the board and foil. I don't claim it's a cure all, but it has worked when I have done it so I'll keep trying it when the situation demands. You need to position your body on the strut and/or leading edge tube similar to kite self rescue position. Avoid getting your body or knees on the canopy or window.

Good stuff. I must say, though, I disagree with the advice to not wash the wing with fresh water. I'm a windsurfer who just got into winging and I've heard windsurfers say the same thing about their sails but I've always washed my sails and they stay in really good condition. The key is simply to let them air dry after washing them. If you wash it with fresh water and then roll it/pack it up, of course you're going to get mildew. I wash all my gear with fresh water and then lay it out on my garage floor until the next day when it's completely dry. Only then do I pack it all away.

@DamienLeroyYouTube
@DamienLeroyYouTube 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. I think a lot of the gauges are not always very acurate as to the reason you are asking the question. I would go off, feel my friend. You want the wing very firm to touch. The other option is with your pump mark a spot and as you hit the spot say on up or down pump remember it, , use the wing, if it was perfect you know exactly where to pump on your pump to hit the correct spot. Also remember when it touches the water if its cold water it will loose a little less pressure as well. A little tip a lot of people do not think about....

Just wanted to remark that it is extremely irresponsible to recommend putting any type of oil or anti seize on the foil bolts. The mechanical way of breaking the seal after a session is sufficient to prevent corrosion lock-up. The anti seize depicted in this video is a category 1B carcinogen, as can be seen in the material safety data sheet of the product. It is classified as a marine anti seize but this applies to boat engines etc and not to parts directly exposed to sea water. Very irresponsible to recommend putting that on parts that are exposed to high hydrodynamical stresses. Our sport is taxing enough on the environment by use of compound materials such as resins and fiberglass/carbon fiber. Let’s not add more environmental stresses just because we are too lazy to crack loose a couple of bolts manually after a session. If you rinse your gear in fresh water anyway, just loosen the bolts a little before doing so and let the fresh water get right into the threading.

No, not ideal to wash your wing or kite with fresh water after every use. The key is to let it dry after all uses. It will last longer if you just try and keep it dry vs washing it every time after use. You are breaking down the coating faster.
