There’s no more daunting a stroke to swim than butterfly. It’s a stroke where no matter how much you've trained or how strong you are, you can lose it with a few strokes of thrashing. That's why we made this stroke progression.
Whether you are in practice or warming up at a meet, follow our progression of these three drills to find an incredible feel for your stroke. Start with a simple sculling motion, then undulate with your arms at your side, and lastly, do a half butterfly with an underwater recovery.
Following this progression in order, you will find a better feel for the water, more flexibility in your kick, and overall strength in your butterfly strokes. Next time you challenge Phelps to a dual, use this for your warm up.

I love your videos, what kind of camera do you use to shoot them? Clearly the overhead shots are with a drone, but as for the interview portions??

Hi Nicole! Thanks so much for your support of the channel. We use a Canon t5i and Panasonic GH4 DSLR for our interview shots, GoPro for underwater, and a DJI Mavic Drone for the overhead shots. Glad you enjoy the videos!

Hey :) What is the right move and role of the head in butterfly? In the second Drill you say to move the head slightly and in the stroke also?

hey great intro video for me. I'm 47 and been back swimming mainly freestyle for almost 2yrs now. I got my flip turn down now in last yr so that always keeps swims less mundane. I been thinking about trying to work in butterfly to my routine, but really had no idea where to start. I will definitely try these drills for a while before trying to get the complete stroke down. The only question I have for now is it good idea to focus only on butterfly drills for an entire 30-40 minute swim session or mixing my freestyle with it? Thnx again guys and keep up the good word. I just subscribed!

Thanks for the sub and congrats on your entry into the sport. The best way to bring butterfly into your practice would definitely not to be focusing on the drills during your entire session. Depending on what your normal practice is (long swims vs multiple sets of X # of laps) I would recommend working the drills into the beginning or end of your practice. Example Practice: 2,000 Meters 400 Freestyle just warming up and shaking our your muscles 12 X 50 Maybe 3 of each of the drills from this video, end with 3 freestyle drills of stroke or even just sculling. 6 X 100 Freestyle getting your heart rate up and working on a reasonable interval. 4 X 50 Long intervals but really trying to go pretty fast with great technique. This is where you can start attempting to work in a few strokes per of butterfly in the beginning before you finish the swim with freestyle. Finish with a 200 freestyle. Of course, this is a complete example as I am unsure of your normal practice distances but this is a good template to work off of. Definitely, ease the use of butterfly drills and strokes as it engages completely different muscles than freestyle which you need to become acquainted with. Feel free to keep us posted and ask us any further questions through our channel in the comments section!

I was actually impressed with the kick. Is he doing something in particular with his feet or is it just the ankle flexibility that makes it look as though they kind of 'bend inwards'? And also, are you supposed to separate your legs a little bit as you kick? thanks, it would really help me with my technique!
@PhlexSwim
@PhlexSwim 7 жыл бұрын
Great question! I'd say Luke (the swimmer) is generally a great kicker so his ankle flexibility lends itself to overall having a great kick. It may look as though his legs are separating from some of the angles but that is not so. Your legs should not be super strictly stuck together like you have a monofin, they should be casually close with a bent ankle for maximum kicking results. Practice makes perfect! Thanks for your comment.

Hey man, discovered your channel thru SwimSwam. God bless for this vid (and the Tennessee Turns one haha, that one helped me a lot.). I'm just a swimmer who swims for fitness and I recently started to try fly. I got a bit confused with what Luke said about the 4 x 75, with 25 of each drill. Does 25 mean 25 metres of the pool, or 25 lengths of the pool, or 25 laps of the same drill? I have no clue; sorry I'm a noob haha. Thanks again for the vids.

Hey JH! Thanks for the support! We are glad you are enjoying the videos. So in this, Luke is referring to 25s as the length of the pool so the practice set he offers up is 4 times 75 where within that 75 you are doing one lap of each of the three butterfly progressions

Hang in there! I promise it gets easier. The best runners in the world had to start off walking. Try and do sets of 25s (if your training long course) and just add an extra lap every time. Eventually you will be confident enough to swim it longer and farther.

hi! the 1st set do you take breath too?
@PhlexSwim
@PhlexSwim 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Tiffany! Definitely mke sure oyu are breathing during the first set. Keep your head in a good fly position and give yourself a bit more lift to take that breath. Try not to lift your head forward as it can become a bad breathing habit for normal fly.

@PhlexSwim

tiffany51793 not a dummy at all Tiffany! So you can pick you head up enough to take a breath. The main thing is you don't want to move your so much that you break your momentum :)
