I don't think you said anything I don't know - you did remind me of things that I need to hear. The idea of accepting resistance is a signal that I need to focus on the thing I'm avoiding. That I need to draw every day. I know all of the things you said, but they are all ideas/advice that we need to be reminded of. Thanks Michele!

This is one of the most motivational art videos that I've ever watched. As I listened, I realized how sluggish I've been in my practicing, and I'm going to turn this around beginning tonight. I also realized that the reason I'm not producing any art these days is because of my need for perfection, and the fact is that I will never achieve anything close to the level of art that I desire until I learn to work through the skills necessary to achieve that instead of saying my work is garbage and just giving up. When I started this journey my objective was to draw two sketches every day. My paint along friend was a friend from kindergarten sixty years ago. We thought everything was beautiful. I looked for a KZfaq teacher not for hyperactive entertainment or ninety minutes with a group. I must say I watched more than usual after a bilateral knee replacement at the age of 70. I found Michele to be the best of the best and I felt I would gladly pay $10/week to study along. I’m glad I found this group since I paint daily with a five year old. Our source of entertainment is art supplies on Amazon and watching out for the mailman. I still sketch two things in my bed at night in my art therapy position. I’m relaxed and surprised to see the things I drew in my sleep.

This is an excellent video! You have described my story in many ways. I started in a lovely class with many talented people. I compared compared compared myself to tears and frustration. Later i joined another group and started off much the same until i just bucked up and started being critical of my work and asking questions. Most of those friends wanted me to love what i did and to stop “putting myself down”. But that wasn’t it. I wanted help to improve and I could see where i needed it. They were very helpful when i asked. Then i advanced to help on KZfaq. Wow! What a gold mind! I focused on what skills i wanted to learn and I have been going like blazes on deliberate practice. The painting group are now shaking their heads wondering how i have advanced so quickly, but i study and practice every day from some incredible people like you! I am motivated to paint every afternoon while my husband relaxes with TV or his woodworking. And I still have so many wonderful things to learn! I am no longer defeated but energized and hopeful that i will learn the next new skill to add to my skill set. It is a journey and i am thankful to be on it.

Michele. I must tell you, I stumbled upon this video tonight and the timing is perfect. I began painting, journaling, etc. a bit after lockdown. I'm still in isolation in NY due to transplant. Well, I fell in love w/watercolor, obsessed w/supplies , videos, the usual. I'm 60, have always loved learning,. While I'm ok with discovering and delving in alone, I just today decided I must move forward, I'm striving to get better . I enjoy your channel so much and will be looking into your classes. I want criticism 😏! In search of a teacher! This watercolor journey has lifted my soul in such difficult times and you are uplifting too! Love your "to the point-ness" - one appreciative New Yorker

Spot on. It needs to be said. While art is fun, it requires WORK. Two quotations helped me a lot "..inspiration only finds you when you are working.." (Picasso); and an art "self help" book (can't recall name) enjoined the reader "...amateurs wait for inspiration, professionals get to work..."

It's being goal oriented that helps me. There are certain techniques, subjects, and certain specific pictures I'd like to be able to pull off. Like a diet or picking up a work skill. Stick to it, chart improvement. I want to rush ahead, but not reading instructions first has only been trouble in this life! But I'm not going to skip learning despite my impatience.

Wow! This hit the mark with me. I find there are certain things that I go out of my way to make all kinds of excuses and reasons to avoid doing or learning... In reality those are exactly the things I need to put my time and focus on in order to get where I'm trying to go. Such a simple insight, but one I had been running from. Thank you!

You are awesome love your information. I can relate to your life story. . My stores is just about the same only difference is I am a lot older and was raised in Canada . As a child I drew and painted all the time and received a lot of negativity about it . I come from a very dysfunctional family with a lot of negative and the abuse was unbelievable.Make a long store short became hair dresser for about 10 years , married had one son. Then divorced and raise my son on my own. Up grade and be come a psychiatric nurse worked in a mental institution for 17 years. Lost my one and only son in his 40 do to a massive heart attack. He went to work and never came home. After retirement I had a lot of health issues. Now I am back to paint with water colour finding it very frustrating. However your video bring me so mush joy and encouragement. I do thank you for the bottom of my heart for all your information and encouragement. I so can relate to you. it’s the only think that keeps me sane .Never married again ,live a lone and painting helps me with my loneliness. You are a blessing to me . Thanks for sharing your life experience with use . ❤️🌹🌹❤️

This is very good. Self criticism is very important, no one has gotten anywhere by practicing mistakes, but everyone, everyone makes them. The trick is to know what you've done wrong. Sometimes I do a painting, put it away for maybe 10 days and look at it then, and put my ego away. Thing is from experience, gained from other's critiques, from teachers, from your own delving into right and wrongs, especially from those who know what 'you' are trying to accomplish...since there is so much BS on the internet, and in life, because of egotism, money, etc. and that stuff can bring you down. This video is extremely important, we can all learn, we may never know the truth, but we can come closer, from studied trial and error. Thank you.

Having started painting and drawing during lockdown I have not been able to access live classes but I have valued the groups on Facebook and tutorials such as yours. I guess one of my biggest bug bears for asking for critique in these groups is when people say “it looks perfect to me “ I have really appreciated the times you have stepped in and advised Thank you so much for your time xx

This is timely for me. I am working on a project and this time I decided to do the tough bits first rather than putting it off and waiting until the end. I have been searching for tips and best practice in videos, books, magazines and lots of trial and error. Not there yet but it's coming along. I agree whole heartedly that if I have an aversion to a process or skill, it's probably what I need to focus on the most. Then I get through the fear of it.

At the start of my journey I didn’t really know what to do to keep me motivated or how to make improvements until I began watching videos of watercolor painting. I am thrilled to say that you’re one of my favorites teachers that I watch regularly, and I have recently joined your Facebook group too. I have been doing a monthly doodlewash challenge for a couple of months now and this October I decided to add inktober too. I have found that my drawing skills are improving now with daily practice. I still have to work on asking for criticism of my work for improvement. Thanks for sharing this important video with us.

My husband while he gives me praise will also give his opinion of how it looks with critical observation. We are like that with one another... keeps you from overinflated ego! Most people tell me how good it is but they compare to themselves who have not tried to paint or draw for pleasure or work. I do it for the sanity it creates! With a busy mind it helps focus it seems...

This is probably a very stupid question, so please excuse my ignorance. By "taking it onboard" do you mean "to practice Michele's advice" or that you are taking a cruise and will be painting during your trip??? I am from America, and grew up in a poor region where most people did not have the cash to buy art supplies. Hence, I was not able to paint. I did have pencils and plain copy paper, when one teacher was benevalant and allowed me to take a few pieces of copy paper every once in awhile to use at home.

That's really helpful, Michelle, and thank you very much. I made a list of the ten things, but realised that I had to put something in before anything else. This is what I wrote at the top of the list : 'Your environment for any activity is important. Set up an art 'area' where you can leave your work out, and are able to return to it easily.' Seems obvious, but I was working out of a cardboard box, and just going to an art class once a week, so I decided to allocate a corner of a room for my Art work! The ways you have helped me are too numerous to mention! Thanks once again, diolch yn fawr iawn, Den, Llangyfelach.

Thanks Denis, so glad you found it useful! Unfortunately for many people it's really hard to make a space for art, I worked for years on a table that had to be cleared for my daughter's homework or sorting laundry. It makes a big difference to have a dedicated workspace 🙂

Thanks for the great tips! I am also a calligrapher, and have taken many calligraphy classes. We always talk about intentional practice, and your tips are so universal that they are nearly the same! Something I do that is helpful is to date each practice and write my practice goal somewhere on the paper. When I feel discouraged and as if I'm not progressing, I can look back at earlier practices and see that I have actually improved! This was my teacher's suggestion and it may help your students too 😃 BTW, comparison has gotten me down in the past too!

The good thing about art is that you can see your progression. I do martial arts and you don't feel you are doing any better because you can't easily see how you were when you started!

I have mastered chip carving with this technique and I do the same with watercolour. I always take my projects as a practice and if it’s more difficult, I don’t get frustrated, I observe what happened and still is that makes the results that I have! The artist best friend is OBSERVATION! always taking my time and I am thankful for my new skills.. I prefer the criticism that make me go father in my journey! Everything is good to say, it’s the way we say it that matters! 😊

This is absolutely wonderful! I have been practising deliberate practice (yes sorry I got that too late😂) for as long as l’ve been painting. College was good at introducing this kind of self dialogue, but it’s not the only path to being an artist...deliberate practice is the path of growth. Wonderful!

In the Studio with Michele Webber well my best time was with my friends, they were fun. The Dean was a nightmare. There were too many egos teaching there, for sure. It’s hit and miss really isn’t it? I think I concentrate on the good cos we’re all still close. And nutters:)

Michelle, I have started to make my own ink and watercolour paint and it’s sooo rewarding when your man tells you that this paint is the most beautiful pigment that I have worked with watercolour painting. I have tried many different pigments, without telling me your proportions and ingredients, which companies are your favorite.

@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber i juste ordered from Jackson, 6 arches pad…. Gosh the shipping is expensive to be delivered in Québec. But still worth the price. Never tried the Daniel’s but I have some in my basket, I am thinking to buy the primaries colours and make my own colour mixes. (For my watercolour and ink that I made recently was the Mixol pigments. I definitely suggesting you to try those pigment in you home made watercolour. Do you use smith to create your watercolour paint? )

I haven't started yet (I do have some supplies) but watching a lot of your vids to start to get familiar with terms, supplies needed etc. But this vid is like a precursor....a pep talk for ppl like me who tend to be defeatists, think I'll never get something and on and on. I paid attention to this! Tfs

Michele, thank you for this important talk. I went to college at age 49 to learn art because I always loved it as a very young girl. It was not encouraged at home to pursue art so I never did. I am not great at drawing so I really hope you offer a course. I do use deliberate practice in painting and in some ways drawing in preparation.

For some reason I thought drawing a portrait and actually getting a likeness was just not something that would possible for me to do. So I took a virtual class about portrait drawing and facial anatomy and turns out, yes I can do that and it was fun. And then I realized I probably can learn to draw whatever I want to draw if I learn the basic principles and practice. Focusing on what I thought I couldn't do in the end was a big boost to my confidence in trying new things. Also sometimes I tell myself "today I am going to do a bad painting" and if I'm wrong then all the better.

I have just finished setting up my Sennelier palette. It was a job for me keeping numbers straight. You are the only artis who uses Rembrandt. I have a nice collection of half pans which I don’t use as they are too dull. I feel like I don’t know how to use them properly. I would appreciate a few tips. Thanks for such wonderful content.

I use lots of brands but I started with Rembrandt so have a soft spot for them. My tips for using duller, more muted colours is to keep them to specific areas. They can actually work really well in contrast to brighter, stronger colours. What you don't want to do is to let them mix through all your other colours, because then any opacity, dullness or granulation will pollute your whole palette.

Thanks for some great ideas. I have been implementing one or two already because I discovered that I'm not thrilled with where I seem to be headed, style-wise when I do ink and watercolor particularly. My son insists that they are "great," and while I agree that they are nice enough, it's not the look/feel/tone I'm going for. So off I go to find some tutorials or some such to create work that's more "sketchy" and less "cartoony"! I've been enjoying all of your videos. Very helpful. Thanks!

You are very welcome :-) Unfortunately ink can look cartoony. Dip pens are better than liner pens in that respect because you get a much more painterly,sensitive line and can add water as you go. I may do a tutorial on that soon... *idea...

I find that when it comes to loved ones ~ they make horrible critics lol But also we tend to be our own worse critic Miss Michelle is on point with needing a unbiased group. I hope to get my art area finished so that I can join these groups

You’re right about having only friends look at your work.....That’s a really good idea......I’m just kidding. I can see that during this Covid epidemic, it may be beneficial for me to seek more objective consultations. I only do “art” for myself. Right now I’m obsessed with colored pencils but have recently bought some watercolor paints . It’s been years since I’ve done this. That is also why I’ve been looking at all your tutorials. It’s nice to have refresher courses after such a long time. Plus, you are a really good teacher. Thank you.

I am starting again at age 70....and I am finding this advice very helpful. It almost seems like a way to evolve emotionally as well....I agree that we are learning to draw to actually train ourselves how to really see. I have avoided nature or forest scenes because i would get frustrated with all the leaves and and I feel like I would have to study botany to do it well. But I want to do it to capture the healing and magic in nature..... And learn to see what makes an oak different from a yew or redwood.... yes it is frustrating when people only want to do it their way.....

Thank you for being transparent a d vulnerable and precious ❣️ I have had very serious thyroid issues - hope I'm better. Trouble was when I was terrible - I did t know it!!! I would love to join your facebook - last time I tried I was offered to find 5 friends - out of the hi dress it seemed - I knew oneOL (1). HA HA HA So, we'll see how it goes. In the meantime I enjoyed cleaning how to do face ?positioning Mnto - vertex. Lol (sorry midwife ha ha_X
