Tyres of vehicles play an important role,It is what connects your car to the road and helps you make the most out of the vehicle.
Depending on your driving, maintenance, and so on tyre life may vary. Thus you need to know certain things about tyre to get a long life for your tyre.
Wheel alignment( how its affects mileage),wheel balancing, tyre rotation, tyre pressure etc plays an important role in determining tyre life.
Alignment
Alignment refers to an adjustment of a vehicle’s suspension - the system that connects a vehicle to its wheels. It is not an adjustment of the tyres or wheels itself. The key to proper alignment is adjusting the angles of the tyres which affects how they make contact with the road.
Various factors like hitting a pothole; driving against a pavement, suspension wear or even excessive steering makes the wheel alignment go haywire. Thus, even when you are driving straight; your car feels like being pulled towards the left or the right.Other misalignment indicators include uneven tyre wear, off centred steering wheel, etc.
Wheel balancing
wheel balancing refers to compensation for any weight imbalances in the tyre/wheel combination and is often performed in conjunction with wheel alignment.Tyre balancing is essential for proper tyre care for the same reason as wheel alignment: prevention of premature tread wear. Having tyres aligned and balanced every 10,000 kilometres can help maximise their lifespan and overall performance.
Tyre Pressure
Both under-pressure and over-pressure are detrimental to the life of a tyre. If the inflation in the tyre is to low; the under-pressure increases the radial deformation and an excessive deformation at an accelerated pace on both sidewalls. This hastens the process of tread and shoulders wear and cause the temperature of the tyre to rise abnormally. Heat is the biggest enemy of a rubber tyre. The cumulative result is a serious adverse impact on the life of the tyre.
Many vehicle owners feel over-pressure in the tyre is good as they can carry heavier goods. But a high tyre pressure increases the tyre rigidity and deformation which leads to the reduced contact area. This increases the central unit pressure which expedites the central tread wear and seriously reduces the comfortability and life of the tyre. The negative impact with just 25% of increased pressure is about 30% reduced tyre life.
Tyre Rotation
When you rotate the tyres of your vehicle, you move the rear tyres to the front of the vehicle using a rearward cross or X-pattern for four-wheel drives or a forward cross pattern for front wheel drives. This process should be carried out every 3,000 to 5,000 miles to even out the wear across your tyres. You can also opt to have the spare tyre rotated in if it’s a normal tyre.
Nitrogen v/s Air
Nitrogen helps in maintaining the right tire pressure, thus enabling your car and its tires to work as efficiently as possible. All tires lose some pressure over time from the gasses within them permeating through the tire rubber. Nitrogen does this about 40 percent slower than regular air.Oxygen also reacts with the tire rubber as it permeates through it, which leads to a thermo-oxidative process that degrades rubber over time.Tyres filled with nitrogen rather than air react less to temperature swings.
