In this video I’m showing you how to use a Tiffen Pro-Mist filter to give your footage a cinematic film look. I’ll answer questions like what are Pro-Mist filters? What Pro-Mist to buy? And more. We’re taking a look at no filter vs Pro-Mist 1/8 vs Pro-Mist 1/4, so take notes and please leave a comment below if this was helpful or for future videos you’d like to see!

For anyone who is interested; when Tiffen created Pro Mist filters they created the different strengths in order to provide a consistent level of filtration across the range of focal lengths because the filtration effect increases as the focal length of the lens becomes more telephoto. A 1/4 pro mist (black or white) will be much stronger on an 85mm lens than it will be on a 25mm lens. A common formula for using Pro Mist filters is 1/2 for 18mm and wider, the 1/4 for 25-35mm and 1/8 for 50mm and above. This principle applies to all diffusion filters. I hope this information is useful.

Amazing comparisons between a few scenes and the practicality, I think I'm going with the 1/8 as it adds a light bloom, cinematic soft flare, diminishes harsh highlights, without losing too much detail from the digital perspective, the balance between digital and cinematic film like! 1/8 is it for me!

So I’m only 3min into this video and this is already the best video on the subject. So many other pro mist filter videos have been essentially an ad for a certain brand, or just not exploring their full use or usefulness. This is fantastic and helpful. Thanks!

This is why I like my vintage Nikkor AI/AI-s lenses. Sharp enough, but smooth and creamy right in the optics. It's not quite the same effect necessarily, but it really depends on the individual lenses. They all tend to flare more than modern glass. There's SO many classic lenses you can get for so cheap that can be adapted to most cameras these days. Just find the set that gives you the look you want.

I've been using an 82mm 1/4 and LOVE it for music videos and short films, but we recently did a maternity photo shoot for my girlfriend with it in a field close to sunset and learned a valuable lesson. lol We lost a TON of details and had to do a lot of reconstruction with her face, so I'm thinking I might grab a 1/8 for outside shoots and when the 1/4 might be too much.
@twocupsstudio
@twocupsstudio Жыл бұрын
for 82 mm 1/4 is too much. 1/8 is fine. wider the lens, the effect is less. so for wide lens you need 1/4 and for 82 mm. you have to step down . this is what i read in one of user comment

Hi Brady. Thanks for the the info and especially the examples. I liked that you had real work examples without people and with people (your girlfriend). I bought the 1/4 filter to start with as i like the halation it produces more than the 1/8, although I can see ways to use the 1/8 as well, which I may purchase at a later date once I get used to using these filters. Take care, and hi from Canada! All the best to you.
