As someone who was also appointed to West Point, this was very refreshing just to hear another perspective. I’ve been documenting my journey after West Point on my channel too, albeit a very different post-West Point experience. I also received 3 nominations as a Californian, and it definitely is the exception, not the rule. I did have to go through the nomination interview boards from Senators and my local congresswoman though. Overall, I believe West Point really does look for well-rounded individuals with leadership potential.

You are a legend that you passed all your exams and finished your cadetship, even though going to gym each day must have sucked. My son wasn't even invited to the USMA information session held in December of his junior year, but he reached out to the group that put it on and asked if he could attend. They said yes and after that he really hustled and wound up getting in to West Point a year and a half later. The amount of work he put into the entire application process was amazing. I always figured you had to be class valedictorian, all-state athlete, lead four non-profit charities, cure cancer, etc to even be considered for one of the academies. Not so. I have no idea if it's the case or not, but I think the application process is set up so they can see just how bad you want it. If you put in the work, that will show through and you can get in without necessarily being the super hot shot student / athlete. My son was pretty good at all aspects in the application but the only two things where he really excelled were the CFA (pretty much maxed it out) and the math portion of the SAT.

My son tried his senior year and got triple qualified (which means West Point certified him as worthy to get in) but he was never offered a spot. His freshman year of college, he tried again and the ONLY thing he did other than good grades in college was he doubled his push-ups and pull-ups in the CFA. He was offered admission in February (immediately after they were allowed to send offers). The CFA, for him made the world of difference. And they do value seeing you succeed in college.

Go for the right reason, that YOU want to go there. I made the mistake of giving in to a very domineering father when I applied. As time went by, his approval became less and less the driving force it once was. So, disenchanted, I left WP at the end of my Yearling year and went back to a civilian university. I was not anti-military though. I had just decided that WP was not the path I wanted to take for my commission. At college I signed up for ROTC and ended up getting my commission through them. I completed a full career as a Major and retired. I totally enjoyed my life on active duty and can recommend the life for anyone interested.

Well, I did attend, just didn't graduate from there. But, No, I didn't feel any disadvantage while serving. Once I was on active duty, it was very rare that anyone even asked our commission source. Not to insult any grads, but I thought I received a more well rounded education at a civilian university. It wasn't as insular as life at West Point. On the lighter side, there was the coed factor. My days at West Point predated them going coed. My university was definitely coed. :-)

I applied for Green to Gold. I was told the only thing that held me back was lack of recommendations. Apparently, my recommendation from Col. Abrams (Retired General whos father has a certain tank named after him.) I didnt make it in time because he was on leave. Needless to say, I didn't get in. Got out after one more Iraq deployment. Still have the recommendation.

Good overall standing as a young adult. Physically fit and active in the community. As many clubs as your schedule can fit and as many academically challenging classes as possible. A plethora of extracurricular activities, groups, and clubs, even summer camps such as USNA STEM, SLE, SLCDA, USNA Summer Seminar, blah blah blah, boy scouts, jrotc, Civil Air Patrol, young marines. Someone shouldve already briefed you on these things, right? Networking, this may seem hard but TALK TO PEOPLE, talk to your recruiters, your local blue and gold officer, your senators and state reps, coaches, superintendents, everyone, even your parents or relatives and see if they can help, and especially your school guidance counsellor.

It differs a ton dependent on the country you're applying from. Normally they go through two years at the military academy in their own country and then the few very highest performing in the class will take the ACT/SAT and all the same tests and requirements American applicants fulfill. Its a huge deal to be selected as an international cadet.

Hello, I’m using my mother’s YT profile and been dreaming of attending West Point since I was 9 I do have a question about the nomination part, In particular the if your parent did over 20years in active duty, I haven’t heard of that may I know what that is? so I can look into more since both of my parents did 20 active duty and my dad is still currently in at 24yrs and still going but I haven’t had much help from them since I’m still young and want me to focus on purely education, I do still have a few years but I would like to set myself up the best I can to accomplish my dream

@@rogfromthegarage8158 This is his mother, I do appreciate your insight and you are not wrong. I was unaware of this comment made by my 12 year old. He is a very headstrong and determined young boy. We do believe even though it’s commendable for him to want to go to West Point we also want him for now to just focus on his studies more then just relying on our connections to get him in. His curiosity just got the best of him. Since he knows of his father’s connections he is a bit overzealous on accomplishing this dream and is upset at us for what he thinks is a lack of support. He’s a good kid but only time will tell and he has to let his hard work show. My husband and I both serve and even though it’s admirable of my son to dream so big my husband and I will be the first ones telling him that he isn’t leadership material if he really isn’t. If he proves himself we will do our best on our part to help him succeed in it when he is older, if he doesn’t deserve it no matter if he is my son I won’t send someone who I feel won’t be a good fit to be a future commanding officer of our Army because it will be a disservice on my part. I have seen and worked with others of privilege and I’m sorry to say they knew nothing but Ego and I will not have my son be one of them.

Becuase i wanna be a pilot lol, If you see this please respond, thanks lol

Any sports that you actively participate in? For SLE, look it up on the westpoint admissions page, that should be obvious. Do not talk to an army recruiter, they will try their best to have you sign a contract, and you might just if you're gullible enough. Take your sat and act, see which one suits you and then ace it. The army have their own pilots, mostly helicopters and some others but if you want to be a jet pilot, navy and airforce is where it's at. You can research this on your own, like seriously, look up Pilot MOS' in the army on google, its not that fucking hard. Also, pull that gpa up. If you have ap classes, then its understandable, other than that, do not be overweight, have your bmi below 20, and your body fat % under 10 to be a great candidate. Participate in more clubs*, not just jrotc, homeboy.

Also, if you have the chance, talk to your local Blue and Gold officer, they can either be army or navy, you might have both in your area. Search it up, local blue and gold officer blah blah blah on google or ask around jrotc. You have more resources than a youtube cpmment section.

I know this is somewhat of a dumb question considering the type of school this is, but does excelling in an instrument and making All-State for that instrument, especially in a competitive state like Texas, help your admission chances to a school like West Point? My logic is that being proficient in an instrument demonstrates not only intellectual capacity, but also discipline and responsibility from the hours of practice that come from excelling in an instrument.

I’m taking 2 extra years of Spanish which is not needed to graduate. As of class ranking, I do not know but I believe I’m pretty high up there. My school has 3,200 students, 900 which are in my grade. It’s located in the suburbs of New York. I just want to say I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. Thanks!

If you look at a the class profiles 1% of admissions were only in the top 80% of their class, 11% only in the top 60%. If you're not great academically or you live in a state that has a lot of applicants then you can enlist and apply as a soldier. There are spaces set aside for people that are already on active duty.

Hi Bob! I was recently appointed to West Point and my high school doesn’t do class ranks usually. However, they made an exception for service academies so you can talk to your counselor about that possibility. If not, just focus on being the best you can in all aspects of high school.
