a few other pointers to add to this: - if your guitar has a HH (two humbuckers) setup, play with it in the middle position with the neck pickup lowered (physically or with a knob) for a brighter tone - with a SSS (strat) setup, I recommend position 2 (bridge and middle pickup), with the tone slightly adjusted to avoid over-brightness. When John plays his silver sky for dead and co he usually uses that position. Position 3 also works to get more of the early Europe 72 sound - along with the amp settings mentioned, an eq pedal with the mids and treble boosted helps drastically. - a slight clean boost/overdrive is essential, but never too much gain to where it sounds distorted - always have the volume not entirely up, that brings out the higher tones without it being too piercing. Awesome video btw

And, I agree about the 70's tone being his best sounds. By the mid 80's his ears were suffering from his epically loud stage volume. The first thing to go is your upper frequencies, which I think is why both he and Bob got ridiculously treble-y in the later years. Everything was eq'd to make up for the frequencies they couldn't hear anymore. Half the time it sounded like broken glass. Give me that '74 tone all day long!

Bob’s tone these days just sounds like a series of jangles and pops with some open strings thrown in for good measure lol. He should stay away from single coils altogether in my opinion, but I don’t picture him busting out the 335 too much at this point. That 335 tone was absolutely sublime and fit in the mix so well, man. I’d love nothing more than to see him at least dabble with his older 70s tone some in his various projects.

@@ryanmoore2779 dude I've never even thought about that before, but Jerry is ABSOLUTELY cracking up at Bob these days lmao. It is clear that his tone is the main problem for him now more than anything else. I mean, for the most part, his actual playing is still decent. You take his playing now and put it through his classic 335 tone and it would instantly sound so much better. What I would give to have seen a D&C show with bobby playing his old 335 through a classic Fender amp again. That tone would have done nothing but make the whole group sound better and more balanced. He definitely is way overcompensating his treble these days, as others here have said. Who knows though; maybe we will hear a classic Bobby tone again at some point.

I purchased a new version Mu-Tron 3 for around $200 a couple years ago and this thing really gets that Jerry Tone once you get it dialed in. @southmeckstunna, did you mean to say treble at 12 o’clock or at 12 on the dial? 12 o’clock would be like 6.5 on the dial and most Jerry tone guys say treble all the way up. I just got a Blues Junior so I’d love your input. Thanks. And sweet video Davvy!

His tone has changed through the years. But I think really the main reason he sounds the way he does is that's the Fender sound. That, not really overdriven but flavored clean sound. It's like it's just kissed with some overdrive. Just enough to get that sound.

that's a really great tone- id really love to hear about the mods on there. I dig the differences because it sound to me kinda like a combo jerry 70-72-78 mixed with bobbys best tone from 72- it works well. but i gotta disagree with a compressor being important (and im a compressor freak- fuckin love it- because I am not the pick attack master of control that jerry was) all tube... jerry only used the preamp section from the twin reverb (one of the least compressed- mid scooped- lowest gain guitar preamps ever) and routed it to a macintosh audiophile home stereo/club dj amp of the time. these were about as far as possible from a tube guitar power amp of the time (well really the fender twin was about as close as a guitar power section ever got to a mcintosh power amp back then) but jerry wanted LESS compression- the onboard buffer- brings just that little extra bit of dynamics. every part of his setup was designed to make his pick attack be more defined- part of the reason his mistakes are so obvious. but that's what separates everyone from jerry- its like he's playing to a and 8 armed conductor- like there's more than the normal 3 dimensional melody of articulation and tone and melody. like there's a second melody. its really awesome hearing mayer start to really go after it now- to hear somebody getting really good at that volume melody in ultra high resolution (LESS COMPRESSED) recordings. BUT- and this is HUGE for making a case for mild compression- then again if you're listening to old dead they did have the ultimate compression of their shows being recorded with vintage mics into vintage transformer based preamp boards and vintage PA systems and speakers (which they did everything they could (aka the wall of sound) to make them less compressed because everything was so inefficient and compressed back then) so now when you've got people playing an axe fx into a digital mixer with ultra clean digital power amps and ultra efficient crossovers on the sound system- and digital preamps. You start making a really big case for putting compression somewhere. Ill try to cobble together a spider v jerry tone with a post mic modeler compressor
@TobyDavvy
@TobyDavvy 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for dropping the knowledge, but this video is for folks that don't have the money for the gear Jerry had. Which means, compression and tubes are very necessary. Especially to get the crispness and detail that Jerry had. Even with my compressor on, I can still get all that subtle flavor. It's still very sensitive and delicate, so you still have to have great pick and attack control. But again, I really appreciate you breaking it down like that, homie.

Thanks, man! And yeah, you’re absolutely right about all of that. Jerry was also loud as fuck on stage. Haha. A compressor may cut down on your dynamics a bit, but you also don’t have to kill yours and your band mate’s ears to get those highs you need out of it.

When you crank up your amp loud as hell and really get the tubes cooking, there’s a lot of natural compression. In that case a pedal would be overkill. A pedal is great for playing at lower volume but still getting lots of sustain and articulation..
@pomod
@pomod 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds pretty Jerry to me; You's need Jerry hands, and just playing at a arena volume and moving that kind of air; but for the pedestrian deadhead; you're pretty dialed in. I was watching some of your other vids, your hendrix chops are also on point. When I'm going for that jerry vibe on my SG I'm on the neck humbucker through a sweet spot on my wah pedal which compresses and brightens it up while keeping it mellow - counter intuitive as that sounds - into a deluxe reverb, also a bit a tube screamer, guitar volumes rolled back a bit. I fake the envelope filter with the wah as well.

Hey Davvy, thank you for this video. I'm curious if your compressor is an always on pedal for Jerry-esque tones? Compressors are a bit of a mystery to me, so I would greatly appreciate it if you could offer any suggestions on knob settings.
@TobyDavvy

I used to use my compressor as an always on. I liked having more sustain and bite, but as others will tell you, Jerry didn’t really use compression. So for a more “pure” Jerry tone, no compressor. BUT, if you want to do kind of a mix between Jerry and Trey, compressor can give you a pretty cool tone. It just squashes your dynamic range. As far as settings, I would usually have everything around 12 o clock then tweak depending on taste. I really have to do an update on these videos soon. I’ve learned a lot since starting these.

Sounds great but the Humbuckers don’t sound quite right to me. I like to use the middle pickup on my Strat and roll the tone down to about 6-7 with no compression and a klon instead of a tube screamer. Basically all the same amp settings though. Works great with my twin reverb.

I built a tele a while back and I decided that imma add a middle humbucker so I can have an HHS pickup configuration like Jerry Garcia. I also am making the middle pickup a DiMarzio Super 2 which Garcia used. Hopefully that’s not copying Jerry too much lol

@@markiszak I did end up getting the pickups and installing them. The dimarzios sounds great imo but I do have to fix some wiring for the middle pickup as it cuts lout sometimes so I think there’s either a bad connection or somewhere where the circuit is short

I attached a phase switch to control the middle pickup and I think it’s too tight a space for the wires so I’ll have to prolly fix that up sometime

You spoke about equipment, but what about the guitar? What guitar do you recommend?
@TobyDavvy
@TobyDavvy 3 жыл бұрын
I recommend any guitar that feels good to you. ALSO, for Jerry sound a middle pickup and coil tapping ability are pretty standard. But you can still get a good throaty tone by running your neck and bridge pickups at the same time.

Nice video and playing. Understand what you are saying but the title of your video should read “ My tone when playing Garcia style.” I think in this video I here more Trey Tone than Jerry except when you use the Q tron.Trey uses a compressor and tube screamers, Where as Jerry did not. One component that would get you a little bit closer would be a JBL D, E, or K-120 Speaker. And another one would be a single coil middle pickup or a middle humbucker that can be coil tapped. I agree with not trying to copy Jerry and be yourself. Therefore your tone is very versatile for playing different styles of music. But again, the video does not represent the exact formula as stated in the title. Thanks

@TobyDavvy 4 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your feedback, friend. However, I will not be changing the title because I do tell you how to get a “Jerry tone” out of any tube amp with pedals. Jerry may not have used green screamers, but there were compressors and really bad distortion/overdrive pedals. I hear your opinions though and respect them. Get out there and play some dead tunes!

Also, maybe go give Tennessee’s Dead a listen through the link in the description of the video to hear the tone in action and see what you think. I’m fond of our “He’s Gone” and “Scarlet/ Fire”.

Bro! I think you can totally get something out of it. Just turn your highs and mids almost all the way up and your bass almost all the way down on a clean channel, then add some reverb and that should do you just fine!
