Grubs are the larvae of a variety of beetles. They live underground in the soil beneath our grass. Grub worms actually feed on the blades and roots of grass. They can cause extensive damage to your lawn’s root system, affecting your grass’ ability to absorb water and nutrients. Sometimes the damage can be so great the you can pull the grass up like carpet.
STEP 1: Identification
The grub can vary in size from three eighths of an inch to two inches in length. It is soft, thick, and has a white body. They are frequently, but not always, curled like the letter C. Important characteristics of grubs are their well-developed heads and their legs. Grubs will have brownish heads with large mandibles. They will also have three pairs of legs near their heads. The presence of legs will help you distinguish grubs over other larval pests.
STEP 2: Inspection
Check your damaged grass. Pay attention to those scattered, irregular patches of dead turf. Use a shovel to dig a square foot hole about three inches deep. If you spot for more than five grubs in that square foot patch, then treatment is necessary. When you’re done, pack the sod back down and water to help the grass from drying out.
STEP 3: Control
August and September are the peak times for grub activity - this is the best time to treat your yard. The newly hatched grubs will be closer to the ground surface feeding on the grass, so they will be more likely to come into contact with pesticides. They will also be weaker and more susceptible to treatments.
You can use either a granular pesticide like Imidacloprid .5G or a liquid pesticide like Dominion 2L. You can choose whichever is easier for you to apply.
We recommend Dominion 2L because after being mixed with water, it will penetrate deep down into the soil where grubs will be hiding. Dominion 2L is also a systemic insecticide, meaning it will also work its way through the root system of your lawn. Grubs will be exposed to the pesticide when they feed on the roots.
Dominion 2L also has an up to three month residual and will treat more than just grubs. It can be used to control other turf pests like chinch bugs, ornamental pests like aphids, and even wood destroying insects like termites and carpenter ants.
Use Dominion 2L with a hose-end sprayer, following label instructions. Using a hose-end sprayer is ideal because you want to make sure there is enough water to carry the Dominion down deep into the soil where the grubs will be.
Broadcast the Dominion over your entire lawn, making a nice even coat. We recommend aiming for about a gallon of water per thousand square feet. Stay off the treated area until it dries.
You can also use the Imidacloprid .5G granules. This is also a good option because, like Dominion 2L, these granules will help control a variety of larval and turf pests, and is also systemic.
Load the granules into a spreader, following label directions. Broadcast the granules over the entire yard. Like with the Dominion 2L, the granules need to be soaked into the turf for best results, so water the lawn thoroughly after application to drive the granules down.
Again, choose whichever product is easier to apply, but for heavy or repeat infestations, you might want to apply both products.
STEP 4: Prevention
Prevent grubs and beetles from returning by regularly maintaining your yard. Mow your grass at the right height; properly water your lawn, being careful not to over-water; fertilize your lawn in the fall season to strengthen the turf’s roots and resist injury from grubs, and apply Dominion 2L or Imidacloprid granules every three months for long lasting control.

In summers when we dig for manure these crubs come in kilos. We seprate them as much as we can but still they move to almost every field. I hate them. Super good video- tons of facts, good graphics, clear sound; good speaker. Here's the million dollar question, though- what do these chemicals do to the river when they wash off my lawn, into the storm drain, and straight into the river where I fish and from where my tap water comes? I LOVE green 1980s- looking lawns. LOVE them. But I am beginning to question how practical they are from a stand point of "hey, HOW much time and money does this take to maintain?" "What EXACTLY is the environmental impact of my dream lawn?" Again, great video, REALLY good, and it has opened my understanding of grubs. If someone can tell me that somehow these chemicals aren't degrading water quality and ecosystems, I can maybe press the "i believe button." I WANT a good lawn. Based on this video, and a couple others, I KNOW what the problem is now- it's june bug larvae. THAT"S the problem. But man, I'm going to inject WHAT into the ground?

Use milky spore. It's all natural in a powder form. Mix with water and spray. It lasts about 10 years before soil needs another application. It's safe for people and pets. Milky spore is activated like a yeast cake after adding water. It's a bacteria that enters the grubs brain . The grub loses its appetite and dies from starvation. It takes one season to become really effective.
@boojangles

@@samuelbarbary8603 Does milky spore get them when they are down deep? How long after treating can I start to refresh my lawn? I want to prep it for sod or seed but there is TOO much info online. I have no idea where to start. I don't want to eliminate beneficial organisms and contaminate our organic garden.
@samuelbarbary8603
@samuelbarbary8603 4 жыл бұрын
@@boojangles Hi Boo, Milky spore will go fairly deep, but the grubs stay pretty close to the surface and hang around the tender roots especially in lawns that have a thatch issue. If you are going to rejuvenate an existing lawn with thatch, dethatch first. Then use an organic fertilizer. Never use synthetics as these type of fertilizers promote root growth close to the surface and that's the environment the grubs like. Organic fertilizers and property watering will force grass roots to grow deeper. It's better to water grass twice a week with a total of 2 inches than to spread the 2 inches over 7 days. So apply milky spore after dethatching and fertilizing. If you are planting sod, apply milky spore after planting.

Starlings, crows, sparrows, grackles, and robins feed on those grubs. Will the pesticide you recommend harm these birds? Milky Spores will not harm birds or earth worms, but will kill the grubs within three weeks. Plus, once milky spores are applied to soil, then the milky spores are a permanent friendly addition to the soil; so you need only apply milky spores once to your soil for many years of protection.

Who care? I'm more worried about them in my lawn and ending up in my garden. It's a small price to pay. @@Shanonmcnab576 Unless you have a screen over your lawn, there is no telling where a bird may land to eat. I realize you do not care about the wildlife around you, but you should care about yourself. It's must cheaper, and much less labor, to apply Milky Spores only once to your lawn for years of protection, verses continually applying a pesticide to your lawn every year. It's time to start acting smarter about what you do, even if you are only concerned about "me, myself, and I, and the hell with the wonderful creatures that live around me."

Of course if he misses garbage day it's just fine dumped in the field. No one is trying to grow anything out there. I'm sure he's thinking that he is void of any responsibility to keep our environment clean and safe to pass on to the next generation. Bah humbug, they're on their own, don't come knocking on my door with information on recycling. We just started that so it had been working just fine the way it was for years. Absolutely relentless on plants and small vulnerable trees. They killed a newly transplanted tibouchina granulosa tree 3 years ago before I realized what was going on. I replanted that same type tree recently and now the grubs are at it again, even though I've used many preventive measures like milky spore and the touted Dominion 2L. I hope I caught it early enough this time. Down at the roots it's wall to wall grubs.

I find it funny that people call them Grubs worms. They aren’t at all worms. But we all know them as grub worms.

I was actually growing these kind of grubs on purpose on a big pot. i was feeding them Korn and fruits to get them to mature into green beetles , I put a screen around so I can keep the beetles as pets... this morning I went to check on them on my patio and it was like a crime scene. The raccoons ate all of them, dirt everywhere and I checked to see if any of the beetles were left but no only one bitten in half.
