So I'm a beginning player (61 never too old to start). It's so nice having youtube to teach me so much. I'm struggling with nose down. "Pour the coffee", but with everything I'm still thinking about during my throw, that always went out the window and bloop nose up. So I watched this video (twice) and went out today to try it. It made the biggest difference in my throws that I've seen in a couple months. Not worrying about my wrist, but just supinating at the end of my throw was so easy and the flights were some of my best and longest. Really thanks Josh.

There may be a fly in my soup. I've recently begun simplifying my form as much as possible to reduce the number of moving parts and variables. So holding the angle from start to finish seems like a solid strategy. Combined with a new 3 finger power grip which naturally dips the leading edge into my desired angle (down), it's been working consistently well. Thanks for the great content.

Wow you comment about if you're releasing late your nose down angle turns into nose up was a huge revelation for me. I've been struggling with late releases and I feel like when I rip one and get a snap on it they're often nose up (and annhyzer) - and I think it's exactly what you mentioned.

This video was super helpful. I've been struggling with my release angles and thought that 12 o'clock was the correct angle of release, but this video helped me understand how that is wrong. I've also been struggling with trying to keep my wrist flexed (as in the pouring coffee method) while also keeping my arm loose enough to create the "whip" that you hear so much of in the DG community. I think this video does an excellent job addressing how those two seemingly contradictory concepts of a flexed wrist (pouring coffee) and loose arm (whip) can both co-exist in form. But after watching this video, I am definitely doing to give the soup method a try as I think it could do a better job encouraging a relaxed and smooth release in my own form. Either way, thank you for the great content! We're very lucky to have you and your awesome cameraman (I really do appreciate when they ask questions mid-video because they're often the same ones I have) in the DG community. Cheers

I really like the comparison with the two different styles. I have a friend I go with who throws the second style, and I sometimes find it hard to describe how much anny or hyzer to throw on the same discs. It took me a bit to realize that there were multiple ways to throw the same exact shot. We both throw similar distance RHBH, and its cool to see different methods achieve the same effect.

Helpful advice and a good reminder of keeping the nose down. Something I've struggled with as a player with 2 years experience and 350 feet of power: how can I ensure the nose is down, while throwing long distance shots? High throws that utilize the fairway and plenty of space under the disc make it always feel nose up. Thanks!

Still kind of a noob myself but I’ve realized there’s a difference between throwing nose up and throwing flat at an upward angle if that makes sense. Same flat release but the plane or arc of your arm is going low to high instead of straight across your body

That's why my anhyzer shots feel so much faster! It's combination of more effective hip rotation and pronounced supination, both of which happen because I struggled getting anhyzer angle and only solution was highly angled runup, extreme leanback and turning the disc almost bottom up during reachback.

Very cool explanation. Thanks. I'll note that putters and mids don't have as sharp a leading edge, so there's a much wider margin of error on nose angle. Drivers have such a sharp knife edge that getting the nose angle correct is super sensitive to the exact angle of release. The pros can manipulate the release angle much better than us mere mortals, but they also prefer throwing putters whenever they can for this very reason, IMO.

Coming from the ultimate world, I definitely had to revamp this part of my throw so I didn't push through with my thumb. By relaxing the wrist/forearm and being nose up on the "reach back", the mechanics of the throw will naturally supinate the wrist. The standard deviation of my disc distance shrunk dramatically. Now if only I could putt...

Love the second method because it keeps you loose. I found with pouring the coffee if you end up pulling the wrist comes up because of the tension (you essentially pulling with your wrist). That makes the elbow drop and causes nose up even more.

That's exactly been my issue with that method. I try to set my wrist angle before, but when I pull through, I tend to tense up and the wrist angle is lost. Result -- nose up. I'm gonna try the other method to see if I get better results.

thanks a lot for mentioning about the 2nd method. i’m a beginner and i’m having issues keeping nose down. keeping my wrist in the “pouring coffee” method is very unnatural and i’m having difficulty sticking to it all the way to the follow through. i guess the best way is actually taking a video of your throws and finding ways to ensure you have the nose down at the release point? and not to focus on the upper body but rather the basics of footwork and lower body rotation? i’m not so sure to be honest…

I would slowly go through and feel what your arm is feeling in order to get it nose down and then replicate that feeling with a throw. Better to focus on a feeling for this IMO
@Randingi
@Randingi 2 жыл бұрын
Really great topic and content. Mechanically this is one I've struggled with and have been messing with. Pour the coffee - 100% agree on the tension in the wrist. Because if you look at pros in slow motion and watch the final moments before the release of the disc, their wrists are curled on the back of the disc just moments before the 10 o'clock release aka the tip of the whip from Dave Dunapace. They're throwing the back of the disc. If you pour the coffee, in my case I have found you lose some mobility (extension and flexion) in your wrist trying to force the thumb down compared to a neutral wrist placement. Paul Ulibarri is a wrist curler - watch him throw and on his first step is his wrist curls around the disc. If there's tension in the wrist, and the mobility becomes less/uncomfortable, I am either pushing the thumb down too hard or I my facts are wrong about the wrists involvement. GG is a briefcase holder and it's something I've started doing. One thing Simon reinforces is that the more moving parts and variability in your throw, the harder it is to replicate and to be consistent. I think the briefcase method is one that can be difficult to replicate because there's a higher chance of one of the moving parts being slightly off. The only alternative that I've thought about is like you mentioned pour the coffee at the last moment vs the entire throw. This one I haven't found to jive because thinking about having to do that at the right moment feels like a moving piece that could go wrong the most easily.
@OverthrowDiscGolf
@OverthrowDiscGolf 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed on all of the above
@Randingi
@Randingi 2 жыл бұрын
@@OverthrowDiscGolf One last thing I forgot to add, but again this is speculation. The part where you talk about how you go from the briefcase to nose down at release, I believe at that split second this is caused by the force of the disc on the wrist causing the wrist to point downward. The force (mass x acceleration) from the disc going from a vertical position in the back swing to gaining speed via rotation (acceleration) and suddenly redirecting down to a flat position causes a force upon the wrist which puts the wrist into the pour the coffee position automatically at the last second. It's like the wrist is a rubber band here and the tendons get quickly stretched. It's the tip of the whip if you will but with variation. If your wrist joint wasn't there to stop the disc you would eventually throw it into the ground when the disc goes from a vertical position to flat.

I noticed you mentioned tennis. I have a problem with my backhand throw that I assume is the result of tennis: radial deviation of the wrist. This is especially a problem when trying the coffee-pouring technique--my wrist always floats up out of it. Hopefully supination helps. Have you run into this problem before (perhaps with other tennis disc golfers)?
@OverthrowDiscGolf

I’m gonna be honest with you. I have never used the term radial deviation in my tennis lessons. What is that? Do you have a one hander? Is that from setting your racket in prep? If so I had that issue too
@timfrazier4743
@timfrazier4743 2 жыл бұрын
@@OverthrowDiscGolf Thanks for the reply. It is a one-handed backhand problem (I'm finding the one-hander creates a number of muscle memory issues for disc golf). I likewise would never use the language of radial deviation in a tennis lesson--the moment of radial deviation I have in mind happens naturally when one is driving outward and then following through on the backhand. Radial deviation would just be the opposite of the coffee-pouring position--so whenever I drive outward on my backhand drive, my wrist wants to move from the coffee-pouring position upward (thereby creating nose-up and wobble issues)

I think your supination strategy adds complexity to the throw. You now have yet another thing that has to be done with perfect timing with a joint that is changing shape very quickly. Add the complexity of throwing with a hyser or anhyser release and your are really asking for a shank. I prefer to visualize the disc being slid across a table in front of me. Across the entirety of the throw, the front and back of the disc stay in the same plane. If you want to throw a hyser, you still throw along the same plane, but you tilt at the waist to change the angle of that plane. This is super evident with forehands, where angle of attack a common problem. I also like to teach people to diagnose the angle of attack issue by telling them, "if the harder you throw, the faster your disc goes to the sky, you probably aren't throwing flat." One more thing. You say to throw nose down. Many newbies will think that you mean that they should throw with the leading edge lower than the trailing edge of the disc. I am pretty sure that will not end well for most people...unless the trajectory of their pull is from low to high...and even then, don't you still want the disc totally flat as it leaves your hand?
@OverthrowDiscGolf
@OverthrowDiscGolf 2 жыл бұрын
It does add complexity to the motion but I can show you many, many, many, photos that show pros doing it. I’m not a fan of complexity but here I think it is necessary. In every sport there is a lot of work to be done at contact or release. This is where I see a lot of work being done in disc golf. I showed what nose down was for the newbies. And you do want it nose down/tail up. Hard to get truly flat since any variance creates a differential in nose and tail angle. Some shots call for nose up to stall. High annys might call for a more severe downward nose angle. There is not an ideal nose angle for drives. The table example is one that I have used for similar purposes.

So how does one throw at a higher angle, higher in the air, but not nose up? More supination or more extreme coffee pour like Ezra mentions.
@destortoise
@destortoise 2 жыл бұрын
The pour coffee method refers more to 'ulnar deviation,' which I believe controls the nose angle better. But you are definitely onto some things here because in my work with coaching friends through the "pour coffee" method has not always worked. I am reluctant to agree about supination and pronation as i think messing with those angles leads to off-axis torque for many. On a side note, I think the root of most nose angle issues is truly and simply--isometric wrist and hand strength. We can talk all about this or that angle but at the end of the day, the wrist is a very mobile joint that relies primarily on muscular stability. Over time and reps of throwing, people simply get better at manipulating the disc the way they want as you alluded to in the video. Great discussion stuff so if you ever want to talk to someone who studies movement daily, reach out. Great vid
@OverthrowDiscGolf
@OverthrowDiscGolf 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I do think there is an overwhelming amount of slow motion footage showing pros pronating and supinating (and some multiple times in one throw) that allows us to say that doing either of those doesn’t lead to off axis torque. Just one man’s opinion though
