1 week down and we had success! Couple things I changed: not telling them they could put them off. I give them a "weekend" but I do remind them to do the chores because they're instinctively couch potatoes and I need help. Lol. They can't turn the TV on without doing their chores first. This motivates them the most, they hurry as fast as they can to complete them now. A "rotating" chore. Both of my kids wanted the same chore so we switch between feeding chickens and cleaning out the Roomba week after week. We have a very small house so coming up with chores to do everyday was difficult at first. The 5 year old makes his bed, brushes his teeth (those are lumped as one) puts his PJs away, cleans the table after dinner, cleans his room before bed, feed the cat and the chickens (he wanted 6 chores I gave them to him 😂) The 8 year old does all of the same chores except he wipes down the counter after breakfast, feeds the dog, feeds the chickens/empties the roomba. Wipes down the toilet and dusts. Daddy misses feeding the dog so we made a category called "mommy & daddy choice" like put shoes away, laundry away, unload dishwasher etc. I found an app called "Rooster Money" that just tracks their allowance. There's no fancy spreadsheet and you're not depositing money into an account, it just tracks it. Thank you for this, it's really changed my view of a chore system. They're engaged and excited to complete their tasks (even disappointed if they miss a day on accident)

My second comment tonight, because I love that you allowed your kids to contract with each other to do uncompleted jobs. When you started talking about their imaginative solution I wondered whether you would be ok with it, and you were. I think that you were exactly right, and it's the way I would have handled it, rather then "forcing" them to stick to their own lists. Also love the icon idea. Kids always seem to love little pictures, right? I'm still drawing the little sketches. . . Thanks another great video.

This is the best idea I have seen in so long. Thank you. As a mom of three 12, soon to be 8, and soon to be 6. I have been trying to figure out a way to incorporate everything that you do. And I love the fact that they have to finish them before they get any privileges.

Even though it's awesome for your kids to enjoy doing chores instead of finding it dreadful... Keep in mind that as kids get older, it becomes more of a struggle to get them to easily do and remember the chores. They start getting attitudes and more stubborn when it comes to taking care of their chores. So it might not always be perfect with your kids loving chores when they're teens, but you still have to remind them that it is their job and responsibility that they must do to help contribute and help around the house. We don't always want to do things we have to do, but we still have to do them.. and we learn to not complain about them when we realize that we'll have to do them regardless of our whining and not wanting to do it. Your kids will soon realize this with time if you don't let them off the hook after they try to put up a fight. It should be a requirement, and parents have to make sure it is one.

I am a new subscriber & this is the best thing I have watched honing in on kids & chores! I printed your chart (thanks so much) & we started it yesterday! It went great, I gave them today off b/c it was Fathers day & we had a lot going on but we will start back tomorrow (hoping the work week won't throw us off). I have ages 3-14 so its interesting! I am sure my 14 yr old feels like Cinderella! Being a teacher, is there any of these reading & math programs that you'd recommend for her? She is going to be a freshman this yr:(
@pinkafterblue
@pinkafterblue 6 жыл бұрын
I’m so glad it went well! We love it. I dunno what we’d do without this system, but I do know our kids are better because of it. As far as your 14 year old goes, with her chores (since, if you do it the same way I do it, she’d need 14 chores) I’d be careful that her chores aren’t going to take double the time anyone else’s chores are. It could be 14 small tasks she contributes to “causing” and can help the home stay more enjoyable on a day-to-day basis if she does then 👍 As far as the program go, I teach 10 year olds and my own kids are 9-1, so I’m not super familiar with any specific programs for her. I would download a math app and a reading app for the grade she is going into next year that you like, and just have her do those for 30 mind each and then of course read anything she wants.
@DayToDayMom

Yeah 14 chores is kinda alot even for a teen. I am honestly not sure if I get to do 14 on an average day. I will reconstruct the system for her. thanks for the advice!

She has always taken out the trash, & made her bed. Now I have added quick vacuum in Dr,K, & main hall, straightening the couch cushions (they are huge sectional cushions) at the end of the day, do one load of laundry completely, dinner help, do one helpful task for someone else, & inspect the younger siblings chores when they are done with their checklist! We shall see how this goes. I work full-time so I feel like my house is in constant disarray.

Thank you for sharing! Question: do the kids have any limitations to what they can and can't buy? For example, my boys will go straight to purchasing MORE video games for themselves when I swear they do not need any more video games, they have to much already! How do you set the rules on what they can spend their money on?
@pinkafterblue
@pinkafterblue 4 жыл бұрын
The only limitations they have is the things we don’t allow them to have (like an inappropriate video game). We let them buy anything they’re allowed to have. My kids have only once saved to buy a video game (and it was my oldest buying Madden 19 when it first came out). I think they would probably surprise you. 💕

I grow up in Philippines always having nanny or maids but i knows the chores in the house coz i have a strict Dad.. at my Elementary i already know how to cook i got catering business and baking at early age. Now i got married and here in America and being an instant mom to a 12 year old who don’t know things in the house.. Shes with us every other week. My husband is not strict that’s why his daughter is not afraid of him. @pinkafterblue

We let them buy whatever they want with their money. They buy snacks for themselves if we’re at a sporting event with a concession stand and we’ve already eaten or if they’re at the movies and we’re just getting popcorn as a family, but they want something extra.

@pinkafterblue

Could you pay them in points? Then they could redeem the points that they’ve earned for certain things: staying up 30 minutes late, choosing a movie to watch as a family, choosing dinner, going to the library to choose new books, downloading a new app... there’s lots of privileges you could give instead that don’t require money. The reason we do this is to teach financial literacy and saving for what they want versus instant gratification when the ask for something and get it without working for it in some way, in addition to exposure to a sense of responsibility.

Kristinapedia at 16 my parents got me to cook dinner 2-3 nights a week. To vacuum and mop and clean my room. Wipe down benches and take out the trash. Then we would rotate the bathroom, toilet and kitchen duties. Then I was responsible for all my own clothes. Then at the end of the month we got to go do something really fun as a family like go karting or the movies.
