Hi, Jennifer, how are you? Finally I got some free time to watch this video at weekend. After watching it, I got three things to do. Firstly, thank you for the video. Secondly, give my thumbs up to it. Lastly, finish the assignment as below.😊😊 I drove to a power plant located in suburban industrial area today, it took three hours, more or less. On the way there, when I drove along the bay bridge, a flock of seagulls were flying around, the number of them was a good ten.

Hi Sean. Thanks for doing the practice task. Corrections/suggestions: I drove to a power plant located in a suburban industrial area today. It took three hours, more or less. Last year I went to a concert with some friends. It took us a good four hours to get there. The leader of the band is forty-five if he's a day. Thank you Jennifer, you rock it!

Hi Claire. Wow. That concert was quite far! Was it in the countryside or another city? I guess some bands are worth traveling for. :) Good examples! I'm noting to everyone who uses "if he's a day" that it's a fun expression to know, but it's definitely not used as much as the others I presented. So your example makes perfect sense. However, you'll likely here these variations: The leader of the band is forty-something. He's around 45. He's at least 45 years old. He can't be any younger than 45. My guess is that he's about 45. Thanks for the support!

JenniferESL yes, it was quite far. I live in Uruguay but the concert was in Argentina, a neighbor country, where I was born. The journey took three hours by bus and half and an hour by ship, more or less. It was really worth it. It was "The adventure of a lifetime" ;) Thanks for all!!!

Thank you! Can we use "if she's a day" in the past tense? As in, "She went to college earlier than most other students. She was 13 if she was a day."

That's a really good question, Marat, but I can only think of instances of when I heard this in the present. Most dictionaries stick to the present in their examples as well. www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/if%20he/she%20is%20day www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/40-50-60-etc-if-he-s-she-s-a-day www.macmillandictionary.com/dictionary/british/if-someone-s-a-day As I mentioned, this is likely the least common out of all the ones I presented. It's kind of like a bonus expression. I recommend being familiar with it, but you don't want to overuse it. The others will serve you better. ';) In your example, I'd say: She was around 13 when she enrolled. She was no more than 13 when she enrolled. (This emphasizes her youth.) She was at least 13 when she enrolled. (This emphasizes she was no younger than that.)

There's no guaranteed amount of time. There are too many factors involved. But generally speaking, you can become very proficient in a few years. Full mastery comes with more time. I have some study tips on my website. :)

I only introduced that as a fun little bonus. I think it will be good to be familiar with the expression, but I encourage use of the other expressions more because they are used more frequently. We use "if (s)he's a day" at the end of our estimate of someone's age. We're certain the person is that old and no younger. Mark is NOT 30. I know he's older than that. He's 35 if he's a day. I'd even guess that he's 38 or 39. = He's at least 35. He can't be any younger.

That's the first part of an unreal conditional. The if-clause refers to an unreal present situation. If I were in your city, I'd rent a one-bedroom apartment. If I were in your city, we could meet face-to-face. Etc.
