Tubular tyres, or tubs, are considered the best performance tyre of them all. Here's how to prepare and install them using tub glue.
Click here to subscribe to GCN: gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN
While tub tape is quicker, the purists prefer to use glue for extra security and longevity - several layers of glue will ensure a nice snug fit to the rim and less likelihood of the tyre rolling off the rim during a race.
This process does require a little bit of time over the course few days to complete - each layer needs to dry before applying another layer.

I have always used the aluminium glue, even on carbon rims. Continental say that carbon rims need the stronger carbon glue because of heat build up if using rim brakes since in theory the aluminium glue could soften. But that would only be a problem for long mountain road descents and is unlikely to be a problem for cross. So just use the aluminium glue - the advantage being that it takes slightly longer to set, so you can adjust the tyre on the rim and get it straight before it sets. Apparently the carbon glue sets too fast, and unless you are an expert it can be difficult. But it is worth checking / renewing your glue job as necessary. One more tip, after the tyre is on the rim, roll it hard along a broom shaft, that will make sure the tyre contacts the very bottom of the rim channel

si have you tried the effeto mariposa tub tape? its insanely good! much better than velox or tufo stuff! peels off cleanly and takes less time to fit a tub than some stubborn clinchers!! much easier to do than gluing too as you just have to remember which side to stick to the rim and which side to stick to the tyre!

There are two things that I do in addition to these steps. Once you have inflated the tire roll it around on the ground using a skewer to really push the glue in firm contact with the tire. I also use toe straps around the valve hole and tighten those and leave it over night while pumped up. This makes sure the stem stays put and doesn't move up a little as there is a tendency to do this.

hmm, for carbon rims there is a special glue available from continental they say: Schlauchreifenkitt Carbon It's a little bit different in the usage, with this stuff you just need to glue the rim one time and the tyre two times. best regards from germany.

+vaxbuster Ha ha! Nope! As I am neither sponsored, or super hog-nasty rich enough to employ my own fleet of bike mechanics, I do the majority of my bike maintenance. As such, I vastly prefer riding my bikes more often than working/fixing them, and the extra hassle of riding tubs is a nonstarter for me. In fairness, maintenance and bike work aren't overly difficult (It's Zen, and I enjoy it), and are very necessary, but there's only so many hours in a day, days in week, and weeks in a year. Out Riding/Playing > Faffing about in my shop.

+vaxbuster tub tape isn't enough for cross. Belgians do like what he said at the end where after two layers of mastik they use this Belgian no name tub tape for better adhesion

+Nero Wolfe for riding on the road I completely agree with you. No need really unless you are racing and today some of the top pros like Tony Martin for example use clinchers. And Iam Cycling use shwalbe pro tubeless tires. But for Cross your tires and body are your "suspension" when riding off-road and with tubs you can lower your psi to 20 psi and even lower so it absorbs the bumps more. Whereas with clinchers it is un-advisable to run lower than 25 psi and they run a higher risk of flats. Although there is the tubeless option for cross which also lets you lower your psi without a high risk of puncture but there aren't many options and it depends on wheel and tire combination etc. luckily it is picking up more and more and better than before. So soon enough I imagine that it will be like in mtb where only a niche of riders like current mtb xc world champion Nino Schurter use tubs and all the rest use tubeless systems. But we're not quite there yet.

For those who don't know this is so worth it for the extra grip you get when running low pressures on tubs in the mud . If you ran 20psi on a clincher you would puncture on your first lap..

I run tubulars and never heard of tubular tape until just recently. I see there is a really good review on effetto mariposa carogna tape. GCN can you do a video or review on your take? I am curious on if it is as good for road, cx and possibly mtn biking.

I used to glue my tires with that annoying Conti brush, too. But I would recommend to buy a few of the cheapest 10 mm brushes that you can get at your local hardware store. Then fill all the glue in a new tin with a wide opening so that you can see the surface of the glue. The problem with the Conti tin is that you never know how far you dipped the brush into the glue and then the mess begins.

I would leave the tyre on the rim to stretch for longer than one day, and pump it up to high pressure, to make sure it is sufficiently stretched, and make sure you can easily get it on before you glue anything. Other things to do - coat the walls with aqua seal, if they have no protection (Dugast). Also, if the tyre has a rotation direction, make very sure you mount it in the correct direction, especially on the rear, I confess it is a pain having to peel it off immediately after mounting because I put it on the wrong way...

Si, I prefer to store my fluff in my kitchen instead of my shed. I recommend making this modification to avoid getting it on your wheel and rim set up. it's one of my top ten things not to store in my work shed.

Continental rim cement for aluminium rims???? Surly you should be using Continental rim cement for carbon rims on that Reynolds rim (comes in a black tin). I used the aluminium one on a Zipp carbon wheel and when i removed the tyre a layer of carbon cam away still bonded to the tyre :(

I've never used tubs (and never ridden 'cross) do they really make THAT much difference?
@razcohen5590
@razcohen5590 8 жыл бұрын
+Chris Harding yes. Absolutely. No question. When on the road you don't have to think at all about traction and suspension unless you are riding on cobblestones. Think Paris roubaix they lower the pressure in their tires as much as possible so that it will soak up some of the bumps and vibrations so they can ride faster for longer with as little muscle fatigue as possible. So to for cross which is ridden on mixture of pavement grass sand mud cobbled streets sometimes even snow and ice and you want to be able to lower your psi as much as possible in order to soak up the bumps from the terrain without puncturing. Tubs let you do that A LOT better than standard clinchers. Today there are also some tubeless setups which will do the same thing as tubs but they are only beginning to pick up now. I think that in the future it will be like mtb xc where only a niche of riders will still prefer tubs but most riders will ride on tubeless.
