Welcome to a Resto Designs How To Video, in this video I'll show you a 'step by step' guide with tricks, tips and hacks on how to remove the 020 rod change 5 speed gearbox, as fitted in Golf mk3 later 1.6 1.8 and 2.0 8v petrol engines and early 1.9 TD, all 1.9D.

Thank you so much, I almost have the transmission out. When replacing the rear main seal, do you have to pre-lubricate it? I have the elring replacement seal for the engine. I also was wondering if the input shaft seals are worth replacing. The larger black one behind the splines of the input shaft.

Yes 100% once the gearbox is out for the low price of them replace both those gearbox input shaft seals. I never have lubed the rear main seal. But doesn't main you can't.

Will this video help me remove the gearbox on my 2006 VW golf Mk5 Fsi with a manual 020 gearbox?

In truth I don't know, maybe 70% may be the same, the clutch will be hydraulic not cable, the gear linkage I would think is also different.

I cannot seem to push the clutch lever down and get the white thingy in place ? Should I push harder ?

You may need to press the clutch panel down a few times first and then try again.

Nice work! Is the gearbox very heavy ?

The 020 rod gearbox isn't too heavy, it's a lot little than the cable 02A gearbox.

can i put a 96 gti 8v gearbox in a 92 gti 8v?? my gearbox just popped and i found a later 96 one, same engine as mine, mine’s a 92 GTI 8v

yes it should be plug n play. To be 100% what is the gearbox codes of both boxes?

yep as the 8V GTI has the same 020 gearbox.

The selector cables, the clutch slave cylinder, speedo wiring plug, and the angle to remove the gearbox due to the bigger flywheel.

@@BrandonhamonHD you need drop the engine slightly then with the gearbox loose, clock the gearbox anti clock wise.

How would this differ from removing Golf-mk3 vr6 2.8 1997 gearbox? Mine was the last edition, September. I believe it's an 020 gearbox.

The Vr6 uses the 02A gearbox, there are a few differences, that driveshaft flange which hits the back of the block can be unbolted on your gearbox with a 6mm allen key in the centre, oil will leak from it so remove the oil before hand, makes life so much easier. Your 02A has a hydraulic clutch so again makes life easy just unbolt the clutch slave cylinder from the gearbox.

It can be done with a little bit of luck, otherwise get a load of zip ties on it 👍🏼

Got mine all unbolted but I can’t wiggle it out for the life of me seems stuck on that bottom mount and wheel well🤦‍♂️😓

OK you need to lower the motor slightly so it clears the chassis leg.

Which model has same gear ratio as golf 3 gti?

The car Golf mk3.5 cab has the same engine/gearbox as the mk3 gti, off the top of my head there are a few other 020 gearboxs with near the same ratios but have 90mm driveshaft flanges and the smaller input shaft which means 190mm clutch instead of the mk3 GTI 210mm clutch.
