"How to" In this video I cover the replacing of the clutch release bearing on all 020 gearboxes, the 020 also known as the "rod change gearbox" was used from 1976 in the mk1 Golf all the way to the end of the mk4 in 2004 so 28+ years.

Another option if you don't want to remove the clip holding the "finger" and deal with the spring, just remove the black plastic stop on the arm and pivot the arm downwards until the "finger" is out of the way, then just remove the bearing.

Polishing a non worn push rod to a chrome ball bearing finish on the ends will help it last longer. Adding some RTV sealant to the end cap will seal it 100% most importantly is replacing the push rod seal any time the transmission is off. If it ends up leaking your clutch will get coated with gear oil and wear out quickly. I grease my throw out bearings too. If the bearing doesn't have grease and you like to drive fast, they will burn up and leave you stranded.

Also from SA dude. Did my box today, also ffz, however there is no drain plug for the gear oil..... is it the little spline screw OT is it the 17mm allen key plug on the diff side? Anyways, mine needed a whole litter of oil. I neglected it way too long

@@user-bm7tr9sf5n Hi bro, yeah the 17 allen key sits right at the bottom of the gearbox you will see it , more towards the bottom back of the gearbox. That's the drain on the FFZ. And the filler hole is the 17mm allen key on the side of the gearbox.

@@user-bm7tr9sf5n If you dont have that size allen key, use a 17mm bolt and weld a arm to it and make a tool like i did lol.🤣 Works out cheaper haha

If the bearing is good and gets replaced every time the clutch does it should and well last a very very long time, but then you have to take into account your driving style, as a lot of people sit in traffic in gear and foot on the clutch. Also best to check the ends for signs of wear. Glad you found this helpful 👍🏼

Real informative video - love it. I replaced my clutch kit on my mk1, fitted new release bearing and fitted a new clutch cable. The problem I am experiencing is when I push the clutch pedal weird noises come from the gearbox. The flywheel has been fitted correctly and sits nice and flush. What could the issue be? Huzzit brah... I got a question for u , So I took my transmission/gearbox off to change my clutch which I did and I put the transmission/gearbox back in and this is where I'm having a problem, So I start putting gear oil in and then I notice it leaking from right underneath the oil pan like it ain't sealed or something so my question is does it take a gasket or something or how can I fix it... Thanks brah

Leaking oil could be one of the two seals on the gearbox input shaft, unfortunately you are going to have to remove the gearbox again to check which one, I would replace them both. Here are the part numbers 020301261A and . 020301215C

First remove that green cap it the end of the gearbox and see if the clutch release bearing hasn't broken up, also check by removing the clutch arm to see if the clutch release bearing pivot arm hasn't broken.

Hi, that sound like maybe the push rod is slightly bent. But also the release bearing side sits in oil, check that there isn't any metal bits in the oil, that could also be what is causing your issue.

@RestoDesignsnando 2 жыл бұрын
That is very odd, have you put that washer that goes on the pressure plate in-between the crank? Is the metal gasket that goes in-between the engine and gearbox in place? Sounds like the gearbox is too far in(towards the engine) due to that gasket not being there, or the clutch is too far out, pushing against the push rod. So when you push the clutch pedal the rod is too long and kills the bearing.

Thanks 👍🏼, yes totally agree with you, these boxes are bad news, one thing I have noticed of the years, a mk1 GTI 1.8 with 112hp will have the odd issue, a mk2 1.8 GL with 90hp will have the odd issue, yet a 75hp mk4 kills these gearboxes all the time. They don't like the extra weight at all, even with less power! 020 = Chocolate gearbox lol
