Came here from curiosity while looking up traditional Mexican food. My grandparents corn was always full of smut and they hated it ruining their corn. 😂

I was curious on how to grow huitlacoche, and low and behold, there's a video from my local mycology group! This is freaking awesome. I gotta show up to one of y'all's meetings sometime. Thanks for the video and info. Wish y'all posted an after portion so we could see the results

Last year I got my hands on a couple of ears of corn from my sisters garden that were infected with huitlacoche. It was past the point of eating, so i saved all the spores instead for my garden this year. How similar would the method be if starting with spores instead of a solid culture? Should i suspend the spores in water and let them bloom a bit before taking them up into a syringe? My plan originally (before finding your video) was to make a a slurry of the spores with water and try to pipette or pour it into the top of the ear of corn since it might be too thick for a syringe

Better to start with dehydrated or fresh fruits! Message us at info@centraltexasmycology for more details and check out the detailed blog post. www.centraltexasmycology.org/blog/2023/4/17/eqd0l3vt4gwelp59fadw7bye097cqn

Excellent! Is there a specific variety or cultivar of corn you suggest using?

I’ve been waiting to grow the gourdseeds in august and then inoculate but I think I accidentally grew some in my sweet corn! Is there a way to collect the spores? How do I know if it’s past it’s prime? Thanks so much!

How would I store the huitlacoche spores for next year's inoculation? And what stage would the huitlacoche produce spores?

This is awesome! Thanks for making this video y'all! We are going to trial spraying huitlacoche inoculate vs injecting it. If y'all have any feedback on spraying instead of injecting, I'd love to hear it before our trial begins. We will also be keeping notes to share with interested folks.

You will quite likely have more stalk, leaf, and husk fungal growth, but less likely to have it in the kernels.

Incredibly helpful, thank you! I’m traveling to to visit family in Mexico soon and plan to bring back some fresh huitlacoche to make liquid culture. How would I go about making my own culture? Could I just place the fruit in sterilized liquid broth? Or is there a way to collect the spores?

Also does it need to still be pollinated after inoculation?

what i would like to do is create huitlacoche. do I just cut off the upper tassels before the ears start to form?
@kinexkid
@kinexkid Жыл бұрын
I'm just guessing based on what i saw and what i know about corn, but it looks like you want to cut the tassles once the inner core of the cob has formed and when the kernels are still undeveloped. His corn stalks in the video were spaced enough to probably not worry about pollination as much, so maybe he let them go a little bit more. If your corn is spaces a lot closer, or if tou have a lot more plants in general, you might want to do it as soon as the tassles appear and long enough to cut through as many as you can before they can pollinate

If I have frozen sores in water are they still viable?
@Gwilfawe

Probably It gets well below freezing where I live and we have huitlacoche grow wild here so those spores must survive somehow
