Is it possible to do the same thing with Rockwool or is that too tough to allow root vegetables to expand? Also, could you do a video on growing carrots? I would think they'd be done a little differently since they are longer. Do they grow through the center hole in the netcup?
@IAMGiftbearer
@IAMGiftbearer 6 ай бұрын
Also, are those blocks with the larger holes that are shown Oasis cubes? I am curious what you grow in those and if you like them?

@@IAMGiftbearer great question, yes they are. I use those when growing greens like lettuce arugula and so on, they are designed to fit in crop king nft system. 😁 it’s certainly not necessary to use them, it’s just that I grow so much it was worth the investment for my setup. Growing mediums can be anything as long as they can absorb a little liquid, sprout a seed and let roots grow out of them.

@@IAMGiftbearer my apologies for not seeing this question earlier, You can use rockwool, but to be honest I wouldn’t personally. I think rockwool is over rated and pricey. I also think that the rooot veggie would struggle in rockwool. When I first started, I used rockwool and then just said forget this. So the alternative was to start using peat pellets which are easily available and not expensive. In this video I wanted to show that you could even use any potting soil to grow anything easily with the nursery bags. Hope that helps, thank you for watching and especially engaging with us! Happy new year!!

Great job and decent analysis. Thank you! Thank you for taking the time to share your efforts with us and reaffirm that food can be grown anywhere at anytime with just a little know how and a bit of soul, seeds, lights/power, water and apparatus. My discovery of leaf goods in the darkest days of winter with only window sunlight revealed the same success. Kratky method truly works well but using the masterblend, cal nitrate and Epsom salt is the key mixture. Be well and thanks again for your sharing.

I had 3 types of radishes in peat/perlite germinate in 2 days, and sprouting on the third and fourth day. No pre-soaking or anything. I covered the seeds to block out all light, which I think helped. It is a technique used to sprout microgreens. 100% germination.

Yes, I did learn sprouting and grow boxes from several people including Mike Vanduzee. The slit top with paper towel and soil topping combined to make the best and most long lasting sprouting boxes only using water. We sustained those grow boxes for 3 months and had anytime sprouts by adding only a 5g 2.5g 5g mix to sustain. It kept the plants immature and ready to transplant anytime for up to 3 months. Use a tough shop paper towel though, regular or cheap paper towels or off at about 2 months with handling.

Edward, thank you for your excellent videos. I watch a lot of them and your approach is among the best. I have a few questions and suggestions for you. (1) at 40 minute mark of this video it seems that the planting bag is on the outside of the net pot. Did you find that the inside works better? (2) If using Kratky (with no pump) were those bags really needed - (extra time and cost?) (3) Comment to other readers: the advantage of the smaller totes is that they can be moved after filled with water (not so much with big ones) and it is more modular allowing you to plant at two different times instead of at one time for bigger ones, (4) I am thinking of trying hydroponic carrots can you share your experience with those we saw growing in this video? Idea: I think for taller carrots one might use 4.5 inch tall solo cups (with holes drilled in it) to replace the shorter 3 inch net pot, and finally (lol) (5) Might I suggest you give microgreens a try... I really like the peas and broccoli microgreens that take only about 10 days from seed to harvest and are VERY healthy. David

I will start easy with Kratky lettuce... but my ultimate goal is to grow peppers and tomatoes. I saw that you had string supports on the back of your racks, presumably for the tomatoes. Also what material are you using for your templates? It looks very sturdy. Perphaps a video on how you work with would be nice as well..... so many questions!!!

Thank you Susan for watching and your kind words! I really appreciate it! I just finished up my Indoor Garden Tour video here is the link kzfaq.info/get/bejne/otOKodWo3NO6dYE.html As for the material that I used for the template it’s called 1/4” poly board. It’s very hard to get, I only had some left over from a project I had. You don’t really need the template. I used it mainly because I originally had 2” holes in the lid of the original bin, and I wanted to use 3” for the radishes and 6 holes. So I cut the original lid out and basically used the grey template as an adapter. It was a mistake made in my early days of starting hydroponics. Stay safe and healthy and healthy and it’s always a pleasure to hear from you!

Thank you! I wish I can grow outdoors, I have a huge backyard but without a greenhouse everything gets eaten up by critters like I mention at the end of the video. Also living in Canada, we have really short summers so the greenhouse would have to be heated, so thanks for your suggestion, I choose to have my garden indoors. Thanks for watching

What are your other seedlings germinating in? Is that rockwool?
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Jade! Great question, the really small light brown looking cubes are oasis cubes, I mainly use them for lettuce and any other types of greens that I put into my crop king nft. You also asked me another question in our Facebook group, I didn’t want to hyjack the post. So, rapid rooters are great to use to germinate and keep the plant growing. They do the same job as jiffy pellets. I just get the jiffy pellets because I bought a big case of them and they were very inexpensive per piece. I don’t use the clay pebbles, to painful lol. Between Washington them out and sanitizing after every use, it was way to much work. I love the clone collars, I use them on all my plants like peppers, tomatoes and other long growing plants. I think they are awesome. I will be posting a few shorts on my channel to help people out with questions like yours. So stay tuned and help us grow by subscribing. I hope this helps and please feel free to look through the comments there are a lot of great questions like yours and answers😉 Talk to you soon and happy growing!

Once set up, each radish costs about 15 cents. The basic hardware is a quality of life investment. The shelf, totes and light will easily last 10 years, if not 15 or 20 like with the stainless steel rack.

I am going to try the paper towel method with all my seeds, I am new to this, and I am not being successful planting the seeds in rockwool for some reason...? My dome gets so much condensation and stays very wet inside (it is on a heat mat) so I'm not sure what I am doing wrong...?
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639 2 жыл бұрын
The paper towel method works well. Just check them after 2 days and then every day. I used to use rockwool but I wasn’t to fond of it and it was hit and miss. If all your seeds are hard to germinate it could also be the seeds. Try the paper towel method before you come to that conclusion. My favourite medium to use is the jiffy peat pellets. They seem to work like a charm. If you have a ton of condensation in your dome just crack it open for a few hours or remove it completely and just dry it out a little and put it back on, again you can always leave it a little open for a few hours or less. Some seeds seem to take forever and usually take about a week or more sometimes to start growing. What seeds are you having troubles with?

@@kdelcastillo some seeds take about 5 to 7 days and sometimes a little longer, be patient, they will grow, I have never had seeds germinate in less than 4 days. The radishes for some reason are very easy to germinate or at least the batch of seeds I had. Just be patient, what seeds are you having troubles with? Some seed packages state how long to germinate and they are usually somewhat accurate.
