If you are strapped for space sow the seed with a cheap seed dropper into rows and Finley cover with potting compost. No need to replant out- allow to grow in the tray- then repeat in another old tray about 4 weeks apart for another fresh crop while you eat the first batch!

Interesting video I enjoy watching this stuff as I live in cities and don’t get to do it but I used to do a lot of this with my grandparents when I was a kid kind of miss it. Little confused though it doesn’t look like spring onions to me it looks more like what we would call scallions or green onion. My grandfather told me spring onions are normal regular onions just picked prematurely, because of their texture sweetness and milder taste. In fact you don’t even really eat the green leaves on spring onions that’s more scallions or in some places they call it green onions. Maybe I’m remembering it wrong but I’m pretty sure it’s something my grandparents told me.

hello, i want to ask something. i watched a lot of video about regrowing store bought scallions and can't seem to find how to multiply them (they simply being cut only the green part and then left out the white part). We use the white part as seasoning, so basically we use all of them. Can you teach us how to multiply the amount of scallions from store bought scallions instead of just regrowing it for the green part? if we let it until it is flowering and producing seeds, i want to know if scallions have gender like scallion A is male and scallion B is female or 1 scallions is enough to breed themselves and producing seeds?

How to down load videos
@SumNutOnU2b5 жыл бұрын
This video showed how to grow them from seed. To get the seeds you just let them grow without harvesting. Eventually (takes two years) they will get a white flower puffball on top. After a while the flower will germinate. It gets black spots (seeds) and starts to dry out. When it gets mostly dried out you can cut it off and shake out all the seeds. If you don't cut it off the green part of the plant will dry out also and eventually wilt and break off

I've tried to many times to grow spring onions from seed but mine eventually just stop growing! My current batch is about 2 months old but they're still only 4 inches high and some have simply died off too - aren't you supposed to be able to harvest them once they're 2 months old? Any tips? How often do you water them as seedlings and how often as "teenagers"? Do you keep them in a sunny or a rather shady area?
@LearnHow22 жыл бұрын
I grow mine in full sunlight. Onions are hungry plants and grow best in soil that has a lot of added organic matter. I also water my onions frequently. When you dig up your onions do they look healthy (not diseased). In the past mine have suffered from white rot (fungus). Keep safe.
@Juleru2 жыл бұрын
@@LearnHow2 Thanks for the reply! As I'm growing them on my balcony I bought soil that's meant for vegetables and also tried using fertilizer, which didn't seem to do much. why can not the seeds be planted out in the beginning
@SumNutOnU2b5 жыл бұрын
Anne Qu they could be, but this video seems to be directed at farmers growing a large plot. If you put the seeds directly into the ground (or in the compost bed here) only about half of them will grow. So if you want the full grown plants to be evenly spaced instead of bunched at random then you want to start them elsewhere and then put them in the prepared plot afterwards
@SumNutOnU2b5 жыл бұрын
Honestly, if I was doing this (actually I do grow some, though not that many) I would leave them in the compost bin. Larger plants like corn or melons need room to grow so they have to be spaced apart. But green onions don't need room. It's like grass, they just crowd into each other and are fine like that. But then, that would make harvesting a little harder since the roots would grow together. But I don't pull the roots up anyhow. If you leave the root in then it'll grow back (again, just like grass)
