Why Grow tomatoes in a cage when you can grow them up a string! with out a cage! tomatoes plants free to roam as nature intended... well not really, but it is far easier and yields better results growing tomatoes up suspended by a string than caging them... and besides no one likes being caged.
I've had mixed results with growing tomatoes in cages, they confine the plant bruise the leaves and allow fungus and disease to spread VERY quickly between plants. i find this technique of growing them up a string to be the best for our growing conditions, choice of plants, and ease of care.
i cannot take credit for this method, i originally saw it at Longwood Gardens and had to try it out... so i built the pergola to do just that.
while the plants do well and the leaves and stems are well aerated, there are two drawbacks to this technique:
1. you need a structure from which to hang the strings. in my caser a length of 2" conduit
2. the plants are stimulated to grow taller having the strain og the string to encourage the growth.
by then end of the growing season the plants will have grown completely across the mesh to the other and hang down from the other pipe.

You should also be removing the lower leaves of every tomato stalk. The plant doesn’t need all of its leaves if there is a good amount of sun, and leaving heavy masses of leaves holds humidity and encourages infections and pests. You need all the leaves at the upper levels, with the lower stems bare, letting lots of air circulate around them. You should also be feeding your tomatoes at least a couple of times during the growing season.

+ESCAGEDO WOODWORKING thanks, I've been growing tomatoes and other things for about 10 years now. The advantage of course is you can grow much better varieties than you can buy. Right now we are growing 2 types of cucumbers 5 types of tomatoes, okra, eggplant, melons, peppers, green beans....

I wonder if it would be easier to do horizontal from the start and forget the stringing for the vertical? Just a thought since you mentioned they would go horizontal in the end. Cool tip, thanks.

I'm worried the twine would be too abrasive and would scratch my plants as the slide up it when growing or when brushing against it when windy. This I fear would cause wounds/damage from the scratches. This in turn would make it more susceptible to diseases and pests. Cotton string would be softer but fear it'd become mildewy/moldy from retaining water and be too heavy from the water weight. What would be the safest string/twine/tape, etc. to use then? Help!
