How do we react when our toddlers have a tantrum? What do we do when our little one freaks out? What about when our child is melting down in a public place or we are experiencing the heartache of separation during what many call the "terrible twos"? Early childhood educator and consultant Layne Deylind Cherland of @enquiryco (on instagram) shares her insights on how a young child is developing and why they are the way they are. This video is for moms, dads, childcare providers and early childhood educators. ❤️

Really appreciative of this. My almost 3 toddler has been going through something the last 3 to 4 days. He is usually quite articulate but he has been having tantrums where he just screams and moans. No observable reason. Its been happening through the night too. I have reacted badly a few times as it has been 4 to 5 hrs screaming moaning every day. And I have a baby that needs care too. "You can't de escalate a toddler if your escalated" "its important to be a cliff they can crash against" I needed those insights. Thankyou.

Thank you!! So much of this makes sense and rings true for my 2.5 yr old I've been staying in her Sunday school room with her for months now and she is finally getting comfortable and straying away, I'm struggling with what to do next...I've noticed as well that her emotions reach and new high when mine does as well

Yay! I really believe that the most enlightening insight into the "now" is to know where they just came from and where they are heading (developmentally). You have powerful times ahead of you and nothing to be afraid of!

My youngest daughter shared your video with me. It’s great! I am the oldest sister of two younger sisters, the mother of three, and grandmother of four. I am fortunate enough to be able to babysit my newest grandson, S.E., two days a week. S.E. turned one at the end of May. Through the years the one most thing I learned about toddlerhood is “Once u say no, u stay no”. When u tell a child no, and they respond by crying and throwing things and having “big feelings” u need to stay firm. If u don’t, their lesson learned is that by crying, and being difficult they will ultimately get what they want. So, even if you realize u should not have said no, it is best to not change your mind. Thus, self discipline is important. They need to know what to expect and that displaying their “big feelings” will not change your mind. As they get older you can discuss the issues with them, and if appropriate you can change your mind. By doing that can help them learn to present their opinions and perspective calmly, and rationally. There is a focus these days on not shaming a child. I don’t have to tell anyone how different that is from the way it use to be. Growing up w/shame is damaging. In 1969, when I was eleven, there were public school teachers who would “paddle” students in the front of the classroom🤷‍♀️. So much different than it is today. I actually felt awkward bc I never was🤦‍♀️. That is what I have learned about toddlers in my 50 years of caregiving. I really do love kids, they r the best.

Thank you so much for taking the time to watch this video and share your wisdom and experience!! I love what you said and can definitely see that playing out in my own life. If i let the “big feelings” change my mind then i invite a lot more of those feelings haha and my “no” becomes an opportunity for a big emotional negotiation. Thank you again! ❤️❤️ your insights are welcome here anytime! And Im thankful we aren’t in the time of the paddles in the classroom!! 💛

Wooow, did I need this or what!! My son is 2, and he is very hot headed, very vocal(whether it’s actual words or just screaming) on what he wants. But he really does have sweet moments. And I need to embrace that more. But anyway, I just really needed to hear this and know that I’m not alone, is just… refreshing. Because I used to love this stage when I wasn’t a mom, and now that I am and currently dealing with this, it SUCKS. Lol but I’m so glad to have seen this video

You are SO not alone! This age group has a reputation for a reason. BUT if you can get inside his little mind and participate in his process you can guide his wild + free energy. I believe in you ❤
