An encouraging heart to heart about happier parenting, our unique styles of doing life with babies, and how to handle our own limits.
See you on instagram! @jess_hover

Parenting is beautiful but it is tough. The culture surrounding raising our babies is tough too. Between the shaming that happens between parents and the natural insecurities we feel in our new roles as mom and dad... it is all a lot. This video is a culmination of some recent thoughts I have been having about trusting our unique parenting styles while also trusting our own unique limits. These are things I wish I had been told 5 years ago when I had my baby girl and felt entirely overwhelmed. I hope they are encouraging to you. Thank you so much for watching!

jess.. my gosh, you are so right. everybody has their own limits. currently 30 weeks pregnant with my first child and it always seems to me, that I'm the weak pregnant lady that can't walk properly anymore or handle even the simplest of household chores. I always compare myself to other moms-to-be who seem to be way better than me at... well being pregnant. but thats just the way I am. I can't run to the bus anymore - not going to happen! and I can't crawl on my knees to clean floors etc. so we are going to roll with that! :) thanks jess!

I’ve always been a very distant person. So my fear was once I had kiddos was how am I going to do without alone time. When I had my son I ended up being diagnosed with moderate postpartum depression. I didn’t feel like myself till my baby was about 8 months. During that time I didn’t feel confident as a mom at all. Now my baby is 13 months and I’m weaning him from nursing per drs request. I’m beginning to have confidence in my decisions as a parent. And just because I don’t parent how someone else does doesn’t mean I’m doing it wrong and vise versa. It took me a bit to realize that. Your videos are so liberating to parents please keep them coming. I watched them while I was going through it and your calm voice and kindness really helped relax me and realize I wasn’t crazy!!

Love your videos and how you communicate .. love watching you and learning from you! I was mom shammed a lot the first few months after giving birth to my daughter by a person that I really shouldn't have allowed to get to me so much. It took me a while to get the courage to say "enough, I feel good about what I'm doing and how I'm handling it, and I don't need to let anyone make me feel bad". So, I'm glad you're talking about this and putting it into perspective for others 💕

I really needed this video. I had my first baby in the beginning of June. She was in the NICU for nearly 3 weeks. I had always dreamt of breastfeeding and saw how seemingly natural it came to my friends. But due to our situation it was especially difficult to establish that breastfeeding relationship once she was out of the hospital. Thankfully I’ve been able to pump milk for my baby and I realized that I do enjoy that flexibility of someone else being able to feed her too :) it sounds silly but until now I’ve felt such guilt for that. But there are many ways to establish a bond with your child and many ways to love your baby. :) Thanks Jess for this video

Thank you for this!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 i think we inherently have this ‘mom guilt’ and constantly compare ourselves to other moms even without trying, like when I talk to my mom friends they always ask how often is your baby eating? How long is she sleeping? Is she doing this or that yet? And it always makes somebody feel like their baby is not doing well enough because we are not parenting properly. Babies are not robots, each family works differently and that’s ok! Parenting is the craziest journey ever!❤️

Thanks for thissss! I agree 100% with everything you said but especially with the whole twisted mentality some people have still when it comes to wanting to guilt trip you or shame you for YOUR own style of parenting (** cough cough** older generations/in-laws)...things just are not the same as they were before and just because someone did or does something one way does NOT mean I have to do it the same at allllll. I'm loving being a mom and I'm so happy to be one but it's so hard when people make suggestions as if you're ASKING for them...it's baffling to me, but ehh luckily I have a strong backbone and support from more open-minded parents like my own ❤

I looooove and appreciate this mindset SO MUCH. During my pregnancy and in the months after I had my first daughter last year, I had this idea of myself as a mother (influenced by other moms I'd seen online and really appreciated their style) that I'd be this natural earth mama, fully attachment parenting style, co-sleeping, always within arm's reach of my baby. I loved that idea, and part of me subconsciously felt like it was the "right" way or the "best" way. It felt primal, like this was how we evolved so it must be best, right? After my daughter was born, I tried SO HARD to be this parent. I ran myself ragged trying to keep her close 24/7, never letting her fuss for longer than a few seconds even if it meant I couldn't shower or eat or rest, even when I was getting zero sleep because her grunts and kicks kept me awake every hour, and I was forcing a particular sleeping position that I couldn't move from because I was afraid of waking her up or that if I turned the other way it wouldn't be as safe. I didn't give her a pacifier or really swaddle her because that was "unnatural." I became the only one who could put her to sleep. I had extreme anxiety that if I wasn't close, something terrible would happen or she wouldn't feel safe. It was suffocating and I wasn't enjoying those sweet newborn days as much as I could have been if I'd embraced other ways of doing things. Thankfully around 2-3 months I realized it needed to change, I was an anxious sleep-deprived mess all day, every day. I needed some space (and sleep!) in order to be a relaxed, happier mom and feel somewhat like myself. So I tried other methods, like having her in a crib in her own room, letting my husband give her bottles of pumped milk sometimes so I could get a break, and using gradual sleep training methods to help her learn to fall asleep without my involvement. By then it was too late for her to take a pacifier, but I wished I'd introduced it earlier on! With my second, I'm going to be way more open-minded and do whatever works to make sure I take care of myself a bit more, and not freak out at every little fuss or cry. My idea of myself as mom and the reality of what actually works for me were different, and I'm so glad I came to realize that instead of continuing to force something that wasn't working. Thank you for this!!!

Absolutely agree with you. We should not judge others parenting style, I always say each child is a like a little experiment, different style method background etc makes them unique. Tbh it happens a lot in Asia as well, I must confess sometimes I can’t help but frown when I see a screaming child in the middle of restaurant running around for 30mins straight but I would not say anything out loud because their parents are the ultimate person to handle the consequences 24/7. Love and support is what we should share with each other and we can fine tune our own style our own time and pace; then we enjoy the process and journey along with our family

In the same boat as you -- Distance makes me love my baby even more. If I spend all day with baby in my arms by the end of it, I'm so drained. Whereas if he is with someone else for a chunk of the day, I am so refreshed after that period that I just want to do a lot more for him.

We sure missed out on a lot because of the pandemic and quarantines for sure. My son was actually born 5 weeks early and he didn't see anyone without a mask for the first 11 days of his life because he had to stay in the NICU, which is absolutely insane for me to think about! Parenting is so hard! Im a step parent so I almost feel like Im more insecure than I would think I would be with babies I get to know since the moment they take their first breaths. I came into my partner’s life when my stepson was 3 1/2 and he is now 5. I’m barely figuring out how I parent while also not trying to be his mom (bc he has his mom in his life) while also being a positive person in his life. I get so overwhelmed at times. I feel pressure in many directions, including from myself. We want more kids but Im also worried I wont like being a mom, like you (Ive seen & love that video). I’m afraid I’m never doing enough on top of dealing with a pandemic, my step son’s school from home, my own online school (full time graduate student) and on top of internship 😭 With all that being said, I love your videos, I feel we’re similiar in many ways in how I parent. Even my partner is different from me as well. Your videos help me feel seen & validated ❤️

I really needed this video today ♥️ I’m a new mom to a 5 month old (we adopted him 6 weeks ago) and feel like I’ve been thrown into this crazy whirlwind that is motherhood!

Congratulations! We adopted our daughter at birth last year and I know how it feels to be thrown into motherhood with very little notice. I wish I had seen this video when my daughter was born. It's so true that you need to do what feels right for you. And yes, it does get easier, but those early days can be really really hard. You've got this!

Tiffany Oyola I’m a new mom (2 mos) and I, too, am living with depression. You’re not alone. I know how much and can hurt. If you could use some extra support I highly recommend joining Jess’ Facebook group. Those ladies are always available to offer encouragement when you’re struggling. Sending you love! ❤️

I have only Just started watching your videos and I wish id have watched this a long time ago. I never feel good enough and I feel that there is a lot of shaming and my style is like yours. I love my job and working and love my own time but feel like I'm made to feel guilty. I often look at people and think, "they look like they have it down and I never seem to be ahead of the curve with anything". I think I put too much pressure on myself. I'm scared i'm not enjoying my time with my daughter because i'm to busy stressing about and i'm going to regret it.
