After years of mixing, and finding a way to simplify processes for live sound systems, I have boiled it all down to six simple steps. Check this out about EQ's - • 31 Band EQ for Live So...

Setting gain structure is really important. Don't forget to use the Solo, Cue, PFL, etc depending on board model to trim each channel, then mix with faders. Lead vocal at unity, everything else under it except Kick and Bass which compliments vocal, not bury it. Run with mains at near Unity and the VU should be near 0 for analog, -9 to - 12 for digital. Set FOH mains with program at nominal level from the board and set the main FOH amps to the required level for the room or event. EQ the FOH main for the room. Yes everything. This is a speaker/and room compensation. EQ on the board inputs is for the input, not to fix a FOH problem. Use good headphones to EQ inputs. Use meters while pre fade listening one channel to set the channel gain trim. Use a different out board EQ if needed on the vocal group. It is for vocals, not to correct the FOH problems. These are 3 different functions. 1 Input. Clean up a performer for boom, lisps, pops, etc. 2 Optional Vocal group for tonal balance. 3 FOH and room compensation. Optional 4 Aux stage monitor EQ for stages with hard ceilings, small, and hard reflective walls. Same as for FOH but for stage monitors. Should not be needed for outdoor tent stages.

Yes, I use the channel strips to adjust individual instruments and it works, after I set the main 31 band to get the best vocal sound! Thanks for the comment!

Great Video!! Helped me alot 😊. Can you do a video about live broadcast when you are limited with FOH and Monitor Consoles?
@bacontrees
@bacontrees 4 жыл бұрын
Great idea! I will work on that.....in short, I have either sent a submix through subgroups (if not being used), or split the FOH signal from the EQ (so, a rough stereo mix), or have used a group of pre-fader Aux sends to create a custom mix for the video (post-fader will work as well, but you just have to be careful as you adjust on-the-fly).

I greet you with respect! please if you can help me with some advice! I use a dbx pa + with rta microphone to make a car eq depending on the room and solve the sound reflections in the event rooms where I use my system for a live band. it is correct to make the flat setting for auto eq, from which to leave later with the settings on each channel separately. the only thing is that I have the impression that the sound becomes metallic when the processor brings the peak around the level of 0 decibels practically canceling the heat of the processed system from the analog filters inside the speakers. As an ok thing, there is a crystallization of the sound ... what do you think about this operation! I greet you with respect

My guzheng instrument is too sharp. I am using a few microphones to pickup the sound with a Yamaha mixer and a pa system for street performance. How to make the output sound less sharp?

Thanks for the great tips ... I think I have been running my channel input gains too hot according to your theory which is interesting ... Keep it in the green ... Lots of advice out there to just worry about red peaking and that's it .. I'm going to try this on my next gig ... Also very important for me in my small band and venue environment and just generally speaking is your comment about EQing the FOH for vocals ... Do you advise humming up and down the frequencies to see where you find a "honkiness" or feedback potential frequency and cut there ...? For me it's like ALL speakers have a mid honk between 6 to 8 hundred hz .... Or somewhere between 1 and 2 kilohertz ... Opinion ....?

Thanks so much for sharing that .. I know it's years of experience condensed to a few sentences and its really appreciated .. I'm in the process of building a good live sound system at a club here for small bands .. Not too loud .. The Mains are Parasource 12's and I have one sub .. A PSP 12. I'm running a Allen and Heath Mix Wizard 12:2 which sounds great .. I just bought an Art dual 15 band EQ for the mains hence my questions ... I was also wondering is there any difference having the EQ after the snake and on stage as opposed to right off the mixer outs ? I also am running an FMR RNC compressor on the main inserts which I really really like ..

Although I have never run the EQ that way, as long as you have balanced cabling and the EQ is before any crossover (unless you aren't using one), then I can't see it being a problem. I just prefer it right near the mixer in case it needs quick adjustments not foreseen during a sound check. Like, sometimes if a unique problem occurs when maybe a bass drum and bass guitar interact and cause the mains to howl or rumble, I can correct it with one adjustment instead of on each channel strip.

Do you Think that we are EQ ing the speaker and its inherent characteristics most times rather than "the room" ? Or a combination of both ...
@bacontrees
@bacontrees 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, in my experience it is mostly EQing the relationship between the main vocal mic and the speaker. The room has some effect in the standing waves and higher reflections, which would best be resolved with acoustic treatment. Feedback and other anomalies are mainly from mic and speaker.

Mixing around the vocals, but how would you tell if it’s enough? I tried it before but the musicians said they don’t feel the power or that energy of instruments in stage.. I believe they’re referring to that blast you feel from drums. So I tried mixing everything with drums as base reference. Now the problem is it’s too loud & mic can’t catchup 😆 So maybe you’re right, I’ll just start with vocals first.

Vocals are the most important instrument on stage, you you can hear the vocals then pull everything down. Plus its never about volume. its about perceived Sound loundness.

Hello, I recently started a job as a live mix engineer and I’m new to this side. We have a very large system for a smaller restaurant. The manager wants the customers to be able to talk without the music overpowering. Is there any more advice you have on keeping a good balance that will please the artists as well as the customers. We have a live band as well as some artists who just sing over KZfaq tracks, thanks!
@bacontrees
@bacontrees 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, what I would suggest at this point is acoustic treatment for your venue. It can be relatively inexpensive if you build it, or get curtains installed (fire-retardant, of course). I did this to 2 music venues and one music rehearsal facility and absorbing treatment results in both lower sound levels and clearer sound. Check out this video and message back if you need more info, cheers! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b5yUh6qhzd6Wg4E.html

what is he referring to when he talks about ripple in an eq context?
@bacontrees
@bacontrees 2 жыл бұрын
In the section under the video, there is a video covering the ripple on EQ's, but it just means - how flat a response do you get when you adjust too many faders beyond 6dB, either by cutting or boosting. There are different EQ's with different ripples, but it is safe to stay within the +3/-6 on any 31 band EQ for live sound, to get the most natural response on the output (flattest response).

With too much subtractive EQ, it will make the signal strength lower no?
@bacontrees
@bacontrees 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, but in a good way, without the typical human 'boxiness' and no feedback, while allowing more headroom.
