Nothing intimidates an opponent more than a flat shot right at the ankles, low and fast, no time to react or set up for an effective offensive shot. Flat is where its at!

Roger hits eastern, comes through the ball. His flat shots are deadly.

This is the best tutorial vid on this shot that I've come across. I really waste a lot of opportunities on these floating balls at the service line because I don't have any confidence in my ability to hit this shot. So I'll slice it or spin it down the line too timidly. I'll watch this a few times and rip into the practice. Cheers 👏

Thanks for the video. I play with an eastern grip going more towards continental that semi western and most of my shots if not all are pretty much flat so I've been told so I tend to keep the ball really low leaving a small margin for error so I do see more balls than I'd like hit the tape.

Antonio Gonzalez glad to hear you enjoyed the instruction. The flat ball definitely has its place in the game and can be extremely tough to handle. Thanks for the feedback, keep grinding out there!

This video is so clear. So many other videos, just explained mostly about swing path that should be more linear horizontal. But in this video, explains that the swing path is not necessary has to be pure horizontal and level off the ball from the beginning. Scott and Nate said that starting from a little bit low to high swing pattern, then when touching the ball, we can hit the center off the ball to hit flat. Very good point and it is kind of game changer for me. Thanks Scott and Nate, I hope you can come to Indonesia and open the tennis clinic here after the pandemi. One more question from me, is it possible to hit the top off the ball when we got very short ball and a bit high ball near on the net? I saw the pros do that.
@Playyourcourt
@Playyourcourt 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jimmy, thanks for the kind words, they're much appreciated. If your close enough to the net and the ball is sitting up high above the net it is possible to strike the ball down. This is almost always a concluding shot. Indonesia is on my bucket list for sure! Great waves, weather + tennis!

Good advice, its important to know how to hit flat, specially for certain situations, and if ur close to the net with the ball above net you just have to flatten it out if u want penetration.

Thanks for this video. I have always had natural topspin and with that being said, I struggle with flat forehands, let alone slicing.... This video has helped me to conceptualize hitting flatter. Now I just need to put the theory to practice!

Hi there! I was looking for a solid technique to return flat forehand shots. Flat forehands normally skid at bounce, bounce low, and have speed (power). Blocking it seems to push your racquet back (producing a weak return), and hitting it usually sails the ball long. Thanks!
@Playyourcourt
@Playyourcourt 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Zack, try abbreviating your swing and focus on keeping contact out in front. Creating a low center of gravity with a good knee bend will help as well. Thanks for watching!

It would be nice to see this same video with Nate demoing how to flatten balls out more with a western grip. It’s pretty much impossible for me to finish with the racquet above my shoulder like in this video.
@Playyourcourt

Andrew Moseley that’s a solid idea. I’m pretty far over on a western grip so certainly not flattening it out as much as an Eastern grip would. I like the idea of working through the instruction from a different view point such as a western grip though. We’ll throw that in the line up for content. Thanks for watching and the feedback! -Nate

Nate, why do you recommend the bent elbow? For easiness and accommodating to the incoming ball? Rog, Rafa, and Delpo go straight elbow. Yes it is more difficult to do, but generates more power
@Playyourcourt
@Playyourcourt 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. I'm assuming your referring to the bent elbow at contact? Assuming you are, it is much easier for players to find their optimal contact point with a bent elbow. As long as the elbow isn't over jammed this is still sufficient extension on the contact. The straight arm is wonderful it's just much more advanced and difficult to achieve. Hope this helps clarify! Thanks for watching!

Great video but flat forehands are much easier with eastern grip. Should I change my SW grip to hit a flat FH with high ball and close to net to put away ? Maybe a flat forehand video using SW grip. Thnx

Guys, Great video. but can you also do the same thing when scot has to run in as fast as he can from behind the baseline and the get to the short ball like that with no pace and has to drive it hard for a winner. I have major issues with this because when i am running in at full speed, and try to crush that ball, i end up hitting it way long over the baseline by 5 feet. How can i solve this problem ? At my high level, i should make that shot 9 out of 10 times easily
@Playyourcourt
@Playyourcourt 4 жыл бұрын
Jin Jin the perhaps focus on staying down on the shot and allow the momentum to create pace while avoiding a large swing. Shaping the ball off the court is always a good solution if you’re a bit late to the ball as well. Glad to hear you enjoyed the vid, thanks for watching!

Thanks for the video. I have an eastern forehand and hitting the ball at waist height is most comfortable. Loopy balls at chest or shoulder height are more difficult for me and I have trouble driving the higher ball. Many have said that a semi western is preferential for the high ball but you showed that you can crush the high ball consistently with an eastern grip. Thanks
@Playyourcourt

Yes sir, you can def crush highballs with a eastern grip just takes some practice. I'm sure you'll get it in no time. Keep grinding and keep us posted on the progress!

Maybe someone will find this helpful. When I was learning how to hit shoulder height short flat balls what helped me to get it was 2 things: 1. lean with the hitting shoulder into the shot, but be balanced. 2. Adjust a little bit the racquet head, close it, just a bit, depending on the ball height and the distance to the net.

Dont be afraid of imaprting a little spin while trying to hit a flatter ball. Semi-western grips won't produce the same flat ball that the eastern grip does but thats necassarily bad as theres other advantages of the SW grip. Just focus on the contact point an dhitting the ball at the apex. Hope this helps!

You said to comment on Nate's face. OK. I'd like to see more of it. The beard overpowers his face. He looks like a beard with eyes. Is it a costume beard that he takes off after you shoot your videos so he can go incognito when he's out in public?
