This is just superb, I've been looking for "how to get more pin action in bowling" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Piylivern Remarkable Predominance - (just google it ) ? It is a good one off guide for discovering how to up your bowling game quickly minus the headache. Ive heard some super things about it and my colleague got amazing results with it.

I think for teaching beginners it is important to go over what the hook actually 'is'. Essentially the hand must induce a roll that is angled left of the ball motion (through the skid phase and for right handers). Then there is all the stuff you mentioned (which was great). Also could of added that there is 2 main ways to hook a bowling ball. Have your hand twisted so the index finger is pointing straight down and the middle and ring to the left upon release (and behind the ball). The other way is to not have your hand twisted (so the hand is vertical behind the ball) but upon release the hand will make its way to the right side of the ball and pull up (the hand will be perpendicular to the ground the whole time). These are 2 important notes that I often see missed. I realize this was a quick summary for the short video but maybe next time you can touch on these important points

@Paula Hulse because the word "perpendicular" has nothing to do with bowling, and most people know this since grade school's geometry.

Thank you for posting this. They never ever mention this. They always just say hand stays behind the ball. Which is only half true. If you look at the demo release compared to his throwing release the hands are positioned in 2 different places. It’s no longer directly behind the ball but slightly turned to the right.
@cyprianskiba8768

@@robertbrady416I totally agree! I too felt this video was missing something. The talk about having the hand straight on release, yet when the pro actually did it, his hand is not straight behind it but actually to the right of it inducing a spin 🤦‍♂️. Many of these tutorials only confuse the matter more by saying one thing and doing something different.

I am a beginner. I always bowled without a hook, and I average about 120 a game. Today I decided I really want to try to learn how to hook better to get more pin action and watched a few videos on this topic. The thing I learned from these videos is that there is more than one way to do this. Speed is also a factor that should be calculated in as from videos, the more speed you have throwing the ball, the less time the ball has to spin and more time to spin the slower you go. My grandpa mentioned spot bowling to me before and that works, and my grandma always said to focus on a pin and keep your hand straight, which also worked. This was for no spinning of course. Both my grandpas said for spinning, you should start with your fingers in the holes sideways and then bowl. I did try this once or twice in regular games, but I always gutter as there seems to be no consistency. So today I played 4 games by myself. The very first thing I tried was to bowl with 2 fingers one hand, well that failed horribly as the ball just dropped before getting into the alley. So, I then tried to hold the ball with my other hand the whole time and spin with my other hand. The ball goes into the alley but did not spin. I tried again, still same result. So, then I tried one handed with hand in holes down below and spinning the ball at the same time, same result with no curve. I then tried combining what both my grandpas said with what you tube said, which was 2 fingers in hole to the right, not underneath and other hand holding the ball and throw with making the ball spin with my left hand (other hand). Finally, my ball curved and in a big way. I was happy I got my ball to spin. I tried again and same result where the ball spins at least. The whole time it has been gutter balls with maybe 1 pin. I then tried spot bowling using what I have learned, and boy did it take a lot of trial and error using up a few games. I tried the first set of dots mixing it up, I tried picking up the speed, I tried using the arrow markers to aim at and not consistent at all. I would occasionally get lucky and get a strike. Finally, in the fourth game I tried using my grandma's advice about looking at a pin. So, I found out during my fourth game that if I stand lined up with the fourth dot from the left and look at the farthest pin to the right, that about 60% of the time I was able to get the ball to curve and go right into the sweet spot. My consistency is still lacking but is much better than before. So now I need to see if maybe the speed is now a factor or if maybe I am not consistent because I am changing back and forth between my left hand engaging to spin the ball or not engaging. Basically, find out if it's the fingers being to the right and not underneath is spinning the ball or if it's the combination of both hands spinning the ball along with speed for the sweet pocket. So, my scores for games 1-3 were terrible being about 1-50. My fourth game where I was getting more consistent was 94. I think if I keep practicing and homing in on what does what, I can get my consistency up and thus my score will increase along with it. Later this week I will go play another 3-4 games. Overall, I think today was a good day and a good use of $14 as I gained experience and intel. So that is my journey I had today by myself just trying to try different things and finding out what works for me.

Good Tips and drills.... but there aren't any good videos out ther yet that talk about how to even control the wrist/ball in the swing back to the top in order to have the flat wrist! The hardest thing as a beginner is to be able to handle the ball back and through to the point of release and have your wrist in that posistion. For the most part beginners are rotaded forward in order to hold on to the ball through that motion so it dosent fly off! Can you make a video of how to keep the wrist cupped tight from the draw back to the top and to the bottom at release? Release drill doesnt help if the thumb is so far forward holding th ball for dear life.

@Enrique Barreto Generally the best way to strike with a house ball is consistent and accurate aim with solid speed. I can identify many a poor aiming straight ball that throws real hard/fast but manages to find "close enough" to the pocket that they bowl low handicaps in my leagues. I'm not saying they're wrong. I'm just saying plastic ball strikes need help elsewhere. Edit: it's also worth pointing out. In a normal tournament situation you're warmed up after 3 games not "done." Your local league power-arm may be bowling hard at 3 and winding down. But you may be trending up by 6-8 games deep. Remember bowling is a sport of LESS muscle pain not more. People who walk away inconsistent, sore, and "done," are not ready to compete. Period.

For anyone who knows forearm anatomy and planes of movement, it seems that what you need for spin is pronation of the wrist between 90 to 180 degrees from a fully supinated position. Further, the degree of wrist flexion affects the amount of spin you can generate. I also assume that the amount of forward force you generate also determines the point at which the ball grips the surface of the lane and initiates its spin. In other words, were you to apply maximal forward force I imagine spin would not take effect even if done correctly due to the forward inertia overcoming any rotational force.

I consider myself an inexperienced bowler who is just learning. I bowled in a league for two years about 35 years ago, then stopped due to injury and two back surgeries. I’m 68 now and just started bowling again, and my question is; can I change my release, arm swing, etc, to significantly increase my revolutions and hook, or would I be better off just adjusting my approach and aiming location and accepting my modest hook and low revolutions? My current average is about 163 in two leagues and 187 in the third (I bowled above average the first night of the third league). I’m thinking about getting lessons in the next few weeks.

Is there a specific spot on the lane you should release at? Far left, far right, center left, center right?
@insidebowling
@insidebowling 2 жыл бұрын
That can be a complicated question to answer. It can depend on the particular bowlers release and ball speed but especially the lane conditions. Ideally you'd want the heavier oil inside of the target area with the drier boards to the outside of the target area. Usually on the fresher oil conditions that target area may be more to the outside part of the lane and then and the oil breaks down more the target area would usually move more toward the inside part of the lane. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching our videos!

I have a student with span about an inch shorter than mine. He's strong youngster and can get around the ball quickly. Yet, he wonders how I get as much rotation (revs) as I do. I tell him it's because my fingers start almost under the ball due to my 5-1/4" span.

Sven thanks for watching and thanks for your comment. The key tip in this video is to start the release motion from the back of the ball, with fingers toward that 6:00 position. That doesn't mean to go through the ball from 6:00 straight through to 12:00. Ideally there will be a couple of inches/hours of counter-clockwise motion (for right handed bowlers) from about 6:00 through to about 4:00. Too many bowlers have their fingers on the side of the ball early already at the 4:00 or even 3:00 position before they get to the release point inhibiting rotation through the release as the fingers were already there. Thanks again for your comment and we hope this clarifies the point we were demonstrating.

When you do the drills, you go from 6:00 to 12:00, but never explain that when you actually bowl, that would go pretty straight. Why not demonstrate the ACTUAL motion in the drills? Go from 6:00 to 4:00 with the hand during the drills? Makes me mental!

If you pause it at 5:32, the hand is completely different than the explanation. It’s not center and the equator is tilted.

Wow..not even one word about what the ball is made out of, nit one word about how they drill the finger holes for release..and then he is showing a ball with a counter weight hole drilled into it...let's see them pick up a house ball and show all the same things..not going to be putting that much of a curve on it then..

But if you are a Classic Full Roller like myself, this is "not" how you hook a bowling ball. But great demo for Semi-Rollers however. Thanks.

@@nordattack i did read what you wrote. So what exactly is the way a classic full roller hook a ball?
@nordattack
@nordattack 3 жыл бұрын
@@Inkedup128 They gave great advice on how a semi-roller release is done and how hook is achieved. Everything they taught was totally correct. I have no problem with it. But, this is not how Classic Full Roller's release the ball, so this advice does not apply to them at all. There are still Full Rollers out there. So a follow up video on how a Full Roller can hook the ball too would be nice. That is all I am saying.

Typical for this channel - give information that is technically good, but only gives half of what you really need. If you look at the release at the end of the video, there is a LOT more going on than what was explained in the video.

This was great, I have been researching "what does a strike mean in bowling?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Piylivern Remarkable Predominance - (search on google ) ? It is an awesome one off guide for discovering how to up your bowling game quickly minus the headache. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my cousin got amazing success with it.

Your teaching, do not coincide when they release the bowling ball. When they release the bowling ball, I notice that their fingers is at the right side of the ball not at the back.
@insidebowling
@insidebowling Жыл бұрын
For a real effective release and ball roll, it's very important to have the fingers start the release motion on the back of the ball and then have a slight bit of lateral rotation (only about 2-3") with the fingers. Ideally then the fingers will rotate through the ball more than going around the outside of the ball. If the fingers start on the back on the ball and don't rotate at all the ball will only go straight. Many bowlers have their fingers too much on the side before they release which then inhibits the rotation motion at the release as the fingers were already there. That tends to create a weaker ball roll that produces less effective hook and worse pin carry as there is too much side rotation. Ideally that slight rotation of the fingers will happen right at the release point not before. The higher level bowlers will tend to have more forward roll with just a bit of side rotation. I hope this clarifies the release motion better. Thanks for your question and thanks for watching!!

The reason most people release at top or side of the ball is because they can't get their thumb out. If a ball is NOT fitted correctly for a bowler's hand, then all this instruction means nothing.

Why do I see them use two hands when hooking? The spin rotations are not like cricket? U rotate the ball forward for it to hook right to left? This is too much for my brain to comprehend So there's no wrist involved Ffs
@Goldiney
@Goldiney Ай бұрын
Yeah, no. You don't hook a bowlilng ball by imparting a forward roll. The spin must be angled away from the ball's vector.
