So interesting! What about knowing where to stand on the lane and which arrow to look at once the exit point is determined?
@corbinaquino
@corbinaquino 4 жыл бұрын
Something important to note is that breakpoint doesnt equal exit point. Breakpoint is usually a bit later than exit point. It’s important to throw the ball slow so that during that first shot, the breakpoint is very close to the exit point so we can just estimate the oil distance based on the breakpoint of a slow shot. But on the shots to come, make sure you use the rule of 31 to determine your exit point not your breakpoint

Shady is a great coach. I've worked with him a few times at my local center. He corrected some things for me I didn't even realize I was doing. It helped relieve pain and inflammation I was getting from improper form. I've never heard about this rule of 31, but it makes sense. I just started bowling in a league at a different center and have been struggling with getting the ball to come back. I'll have to try this next week to see if it can help.

Only problem is determining actually how far down the lane the ball hooked. It's not very easy to tell where the 38 ft, 40 ft, 42 ft, 44 ft, etc. distance is from the foul line. The range finder marks might help.

I find myself confused by the idea of the exit point. It seems that there is the baked in assertion that regardless of your speed, or your ball's layout/hook, it will always start and end its hook in the same place. the exit point would always be the start of the hook, and the pocket the end. but some balls seem to have way more hook than others, and ballspeed certainly seems to factor in how much it will hook within a given distance. Am I missing something?

I understand that the markers displayed here in the video will be non-existent in every center I will be in. However, I feel this can be useful tool to start with although you would have to roughly determine the approximate footage. It doesn't hurt to also ask the lane technician how many feet the pattern is either. In any case, the ultimate goal to to focus on where that ball will break - normal house shot conditions will relatively be around the track area. The ball will tell you the story, just apply what you know about how you roll the ball and work off of or adjust to where you'd like to play. Good stuff in the video, IMO...

So once you determine the break point by rolling slow down the middle and -31, how do you know where to stand afterwards and how do you know which arrow to aim for?
@cybersteel8
@cybersteel8 3 жыл бұрын
That depends heavily on your style of bowling. Your path to that breakpoint is up to you - this video is helping you learn where that breakpoint is. So if you are a straighter bowler with very little curve, you'll be standing further right but you'd still be aiming at the same breakpoint as if you were a bowler that stands left and hooks the ball across the whole lane. The breakpoint is the same, but how you attack it is up to you.
@beesquestionmark
@beesquestionmark 2 жыл бұрын
What I usually suggest to figure out where to stand and aim for, is if you’re a righty, stand on the second dot to the left from the middle. Aim for the second arrow over from the right on the lane (you aim by just looking at the arrow as you throw, but make sure you throw straight forward and don’t pull it to the side as you throw) if the ball goes left of the pocket, move left. If it goes too far right, move right. Try moving a board at a time with your placement foot, unless it’s severely off, then move however many boards you’d like until you find your sweet spot. Then for spares, depending on if you need the ball to go left, you move a few boards right depending on how far left you’d like it to go. If you need it to go right, move left. Then for getting a 10 pin down, stand as far left as you can and aim for the middle arrow. I usually throw the ball very fast when trying to get a 10 pin because that causes less hook. Basically if you have a fingertip ball and not a regular house ball, moving right causes it to hook more left, and moving left causes it to hook more to the right. Hope this helps even tho it’s a year late lol also if you’re a lefty, switch the standing position and arrow placement but everything else still works.

Range finder marks are 34-37 feet at board 15 “useless” and second range finders are 40-43 feet at board 10 very useful because 40 minus 31 it’s 9 almost the tip of the range finder. I don’t know why the first range finders are at board 15! should be 34-37 but on board 5, or even better yet they should be diagonal to the inside so they always mark the exact place of the minus 31 rule I think that bowling lanes have also marks by looking at gutters they have 4 gutters spaced at 10 feet each. The lesson is very good if you can somehow tell how far in numbers it’s the end of the pattern and with time I’m guessing you can know for sure where 36-39-43 etc are on the lane. If you don’t have the marks and you just ask the lane operators the length of the oil then it’s pretty useless to throw a shot like that just place the ball at the board minus 31 the total length of the pattern

Here’s another idea... go last in practice and guess the break is at 17, 14 or 11 because why would a house pattern be anything other than close to that? As the video said it’s going to be plus or - 3 boards… Well it’s not gonna be at five and it’s not gonna be a 25… It’s going to be consistent ... it’s going to be close to the same every single time so all you have to do it’s observe the others, make a guess each time and verify or adjust it with the next bowler. Have you ever in your life rolled on a regular lane where are your regular setup shot missed the pocket missed the pocket by more than half a pin? Ever see a group of people your your league complaining about the oil in a lane?

@rudyruiz9521
@rudyruiz9521 2 жыл бұрын
Your arm should swing naturally like a pendulum so ball speed is related to walking speed. Sure you can add a little power with your arm but that makes it too hard to keep constant. You can also make sure to plant your foot and use your body to add power in both speed and revolutions. The revolutions are based on hand position and how fast your thumb comes out of the ball. Look into axis points

That's exactly what you do. You should be able to get an idea from knowing the depth and length of a lane and where your ball changes direction. Maybe ask your local bowling center if you could be on one of the end lanes and try to guess their house shot length by watching and measuring the distance.

45-31=14. Aim at 14 board as a close angle. Aim at 11 at arrows, 14 at EXIT POINT and 17 as you hit the 1-3 pocket. Every center will have a different EXIT POINT depending on the sports condition oil pattern.

Then, the 'exit point' may be different for bowlers who have different rev rates, speeds, and even ball weights?
@bowl1820
@bowl1820 3 жыл бұрын
No, The exit point formula is from a Joe Slowinski article and is based on Neil Stremmel's article, Entry Angle, Part 3: USBC Research Shows Where Your Ball Should Be to Achieve the Best Angle. Where Stremmel shares data from USBC research on points that maximize 4, 5 and 6 degrees of entry angle. In a nut shell, Stremmel discovered that the exit point was the same for all players regardless of style. For example, to maximize pocket percentage, high speed and high rev players had the same exit point as low speed and low rev players. True, the high speed and high rev players had a breakpoint further down the lane due to the length of the ball push past the pattern caused by presence of both speed and revs. But, the ultimate exit point was the same. FYI: 1: The Exit Point formula doesn't tell you where the breakpoint is, just where the ball should exit the pattern. 2: It doesn't work properly for very short patterns. Ex. 31' pattern exit point is in the gutter (Board 0) 3: It doesn't necessarily work properly on house shot's (THS).

@@bowl1820 yeah, THS people don't realize that it's not as flat, and furthur right you get, the further right your exit point can move. So it's dynamic in a way.

Yes it could help you to be in a bit of a stronger position even with a backup ball by trying to get the fingers a bit lower on the ball through the release as Marshall described. Good luck and thanks for watching!

Run up to the desk. Demand that the lanes get oiled. Go grab a snack and count to 10,000 while breathing in on every 5 seconds, then breathing out for 7. Call your loved ones, tell them you love them. Then watch an online Rocky montage to get pumped up while also listening to Jock Jams for the remainder of the time. Then when the lanes are oiled, you will no longer have to deal with immediate hook before the arrows. Good luck!

My old center (where I bought and had the ball drilled) has real wood lanes. The new place has synthetic. The owner told me that is the problem with my ball. It has been a few years since I bowled. Could this be the problem? Or is he just trying to sell me on a new ball from him?
