Gentle Guitar Strumming Exercise ✅ Buy Lauren’s Guitar Course - laurenbatemanguitar.com/courseyt - Welcome to my beginner guitar lessons on gentle guitar strumming. I know so many guitar students that ask me how come my strumming sounds so much better than theirs. When they strum it sounds horrible, loud and like nails on a chalk board. A lot of this comes from tension in the wrist on the strumming hand, but I’m going to show you are great gentle guitar strumming exercise that will help you improve you acoustic guitar strumming dynamics.
Once you are able to vary the dynamics of guitar strumming so that you have different degrees of loud and soft, you can introduce cool accents into your strumming for extra spice and excitement. You can watch my video on accented guitar rhythms here: • 7 COOL STRUMMING PATTE...

Lauren, I’ve been playing acoustic guitar for 50 plus years. I’m a finger-style player. I never mastered or even learned proper strumming. In fact the only time I strum is when I’m combining bare finger strum patterns with finger picking. Anyway, You popped up on my feed and I decided to watch this vid. Thank you! Right away I realized that I was approaching the strumming with the wrong attitude. I hate flat picks because they always fly out of my hand mid song, but decided to try again using the suggestions you provide. Soft wrist, light pick, dynamic up and down all work for me. I have a long way to go for sure but it’s nice to know that my playing might be able to make a leap forward with some practice and discipline. I’ll always be a fingerstyle player but it’s nice to know I can pick up an occasional jam and not be embarrassed as I try to be heard with just my nails 😉 Thanks!

Randall this is fantastic! I love using a pick mainly because of the Dynamics you can get out of your strumming. Hard to do that with your fingers. Glad this helped you with your playing.

I started some minor guitar playing when I was a teenager. Never liked using a pick, would just strum with my thumb. Now about 60 years later, I'm trying to pick it back up again. It's been so long, I'm basically starting from scratch....so to speak. I still have no affinity for using a pick so instead of buying one, I made one; cutting a pick shape out of a plastic tub lid. 😊 It's flexible so I've been working with that. I practice playing old PP&M songs and some of them have a definite strum pattern, ex. Stewball. I do have a loose hold on the pick and my wrist and arm seem pretty relaxed. But strumming still sounds too loud to me, even tho I have nylon strings. 😢 Guess I just need more practice. This video may help. 🤞

@@LaurenBateman -- I have run into an unusual problem. The calluses on my index and middle fingers have developed to the point they don't bother me when practicing. But the callous on my left ring finger still is very painful which is negatively affecting my chord changing. I can't figure out what the problem could be and it's REALLY frustrating! I hesitate making chord changes in anticipation of the pain -- not a good way to progress. 🥴🙄 Any advice?

I learned fingerstyle and neglected strumming as (on the acoustic) I always associated it with all those really terrible campfire Kumbaya guitarists. The one thing that did vastly improve my strumming technique when I eventually got round to it though, was practicing religiously with a metronome.

I'm liking using my thumb to strum, I have Jim Dunlop 38mm and a 46mm picks. I use 46mm more but I don't like the sound of the plastic click strumming each string. Should I just get over and use the pick more I hardly ever use them I prefer the softer deeper tone when strumming with my thumb and the occasional finger pick with finger 123 and thumb. As a absolute beginner what do you recommend Lauren? Cheers mate.

Hi Lauren, love your videos, I've been using a type of pick w/ rubber grip, I've been having a problem with the pick spinning in my fingers. I tend to grip tighter because of this, is this a bad pick to use?
@LaurenBateman
@LaurenBateman 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. Spinning picks are normal. I'm surprised with the rubber grip that it's still spinning. Usually super grippy picks are less likely to rotate. I would experiment maybe with the max grip picks. Tightening up on the strumming hand too much can make strumming slow down.
