I’ve been playing the guitar for 64 years. Started with acoustic and finally broke down and bought electric about 15 years ago. I always used a thumb pick with my acoustic because the flat pick just didn’t sound good to me. (I’m sure because of operator error). With the electric, I’ve had to force myself to use a flat pick and probably have 50 different kinds trying to find one that sounds good…especially when strumming. The down strum is great, the up strum, not so much. Even tho I angle the pick (and I’ve tried every kind of angle) it always gets hung up in between strings, especially when trying to play triads and then I hit strings I’m not supposed to. After all these years you would think I would have fixed this. So I keep trying to find a video to help. So far, it’s either acoustic or guys doing heavy metal speed picking on electric. Sigh. Maybe I’ll try this method.😊

Hi there, thanks for watching. Definitely give this a go. Just imagine you're using a paint brush, use your wrist and angle the pick in both directions. That way you won't get caught on the strings. All the best, Simon

Another point would be using some dynamics based on the vertical landscape of the guitar. In other words accenting perhaps the 6-5-4 on some strums and the 3-2-1 on others.

Great video! I have a question though. I noticed your strumming hand has your other fingers hanging. (I also play this way) Been playing for over 15 yrs. The problem I noticed with this technique is my fingers tend to hit/ mute the lower stings unintentional when playing fast. I also developed tendonitis and intersection syndrome in my wrist from playing this way over the yrs. I was told I was playing wrong and to tuck my fingers by a more advanced player to correct this issue. He said leaving them hang can cause unwanted tension in the wrist. However I can’t get used to it at all. Don’t feel natural at all to me to tuck them. My playing feels clunky and stiff when I try to tuck them. Any advice my friend?

Hey there, thanks for watching. I'm sorry to hear that you have had problems with your hand. Sounds painful. Having said that, I always show people to play with fingers out. There are three distinct advantages. It allows you to get closer to the strings (knuckles hitting strings is no good), palm muting is way easier and it means you can also use your fingers not holding the plectrum to pick other strings, like those hybrid pickers. Without seeing you play, it's hard for me to help. I can't see how you hit the strings with your fingers using this technique if your hand is making kind of an ok sign 👌 with the pick between your thumb and index finger. I hope that helps? All the best Simon

@@SimonMorelguitar I have a u tube channel as well where I do cover songs on the guitar. If you wouldn’t mind. Can you take a look? I can send you a link if it’s easier. I agree with everything you said to!!! It’s way easier to play with fingers out for all the reasons you mentioned. That’s why I don’t want to change my technique. Thing is I can hardly get through one song without my tendons burning above my wrist. It’s weird I know. Thanks again

@@DOmusic81 Hey mate, nice playing. I honestly can't see what would make your wrist so sore. Maybe take your guitar with you and go see a physio?

I play that way too, but have seen other instructors say close up the fingers and others say don’t touch the guitar and a bunch of other stuff. I like the ones that say, whatever works for you. My worst habit has been grabbing onto the high E string to orient myself. It’s a hard one to break because it happens unconsciously.

Simon is making a great point. There is nothing more tiresome to the ears than hearing an amateur guitarist yamming on every chord with no control of the dynamics.
