I’m a future educator, currently in college studying for TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), and I adore your tips! I’m currently taking a “Literacy Development” class, and basically you gave all of the points that we’re discussing in such an easy-to-digest manner. Keep up the good work!

👍🏼 This works at ANY age. Help your grown child that is failing academically. 🙏🏼 0:26 4 steps: 0:33 1. Increase reading ability 1:33 2. Increase background knowledge 3:14 3. Increase vocabulary 3:34 4. Be exposed to COMPLEX text 4:53 ☝🏼 Build your child's confidence by NOT forcing on them books that are much more complex than where they are intellectually BUT don't underestimate their ability to grasp more complex information. It's a subtle balance and it's hard for some educators but keep YOURSELF in check too

This is great I homeschool and a lot of this is natural. I never censor my use of terminology. I just let my children ask what a word means and notice their use of the word later on. And the curriculum we use (The Good and the Beautiful) has many complimentary books that continue to build their reading and vocabulary as they progress through the curriculum.

Love this so much!! Exactly spot on about exposing kids to a diverse range of topics and rich vocabulary! I always do read aloud a level or two above when they can read on their own so their vocabulary grows ❤. As an adult my reading comprehension is garbage. It takes me so much effort to read properly (my eyes dart around, never had it assessed), that my the time I get to the end of a sentence I forget what was at the beginning.

Thanks for this video. I’m struggling with working on reading comprehension for my little one. I try to help give pointers while reading helping her to infer certain things from the text, like you said about a rumbling stomach actually means some one is hungry. This helps her. How are some ways you would recommend improving vocabulary? During day to day conversation with her I will reiterate/define words that are new to her. Or if there’s a new word in the book we’re reading. But if I’m being honest, it’s not too often that I’m defining new words for her.

Hi, what do you recommend for a 10 year old who is struggling with comprehension and spelling? He has an IEP due to speech delay. I want to help him, but I don’t know where to start. Would you have a placement kind of test that he can take or what do you suggest? I also have a four year old who wants to learn how to read. We already started to teach her letter sounds. Which program do you suggest for her. Thank you

Hi there, I'll share a few links to my free resources- 1. My free training explains the steps to learning to read with examples: www.toddlersread.com/free-workshop 2. This quiz can help you think through where your 4 year old is in their reading journey. www.toddlersread.com/quiz 3. For your older reader, this blog can help you assess him at home to find a starting place to help him in his reading skills. www.toddlersread.com/blog/how-to-assess-your-childs-reading-ability-at-home Finally- I have 3 paid courses to help give parents the info they need to teach their little ones how to read. The same steps used for toddlers work for older children as well. www.toddlersread.com/courses

my child may be held back from 1st grade because his teacher said his reading comprehension needs improvement and I’m worried my child isn’t exposed to a lot also he didn’t speak until he was 4 years old does speech delay have something to do with it

Does it mean that when a child is starting to read, we should avoid fiction stories
@NovasYouTubeName
@NovasYouTubeName 29 күн бұрын
Absolutely not - there is a lot covered in fiction that is “outside the four walls of your home” as Spence said. Fiction can provide new vocabulary and topics for discussion, and will show up again and again throughout kids lives so we still want the comprehension to happen there :). My oldest son learned a lot about gravity (as well as new vocabulary, and deeper understanding of different people’s personal struggles) from the fiction novel Enders Game and the subsequent discussions for example :). My daughter enjoys historical fiction about past queens.

why doesnt asking questing help reading comprehension?
@toddlerscanread
@toddlerscanread 5 ай бұрын
It’s about thinking what they can comprehend or answer from what they can read on their own. So many focus on comprehension questions whether or not a child can decode the words.
