“How do I make my snare sound better?” We receive this question almost daily. While we’d love to be able to help everyone individually on a case-by-case basis, there simply aren’t enough hours in the day. But fear not! We’ve gathered a collection of the most common blindspots with snare setup, regardless of your preferred sound. Take note, check your drum, and keep experimenting!

How I tension the snare side head has changed since I started watching these videos. The idea of tensioning the rods around the snare bed differently than the other 4 has really helped me achieve a better understanding of my drum, the sounds it produces and how to get a sound I want. Thanks.

For those that said get a vintage acrolite....i love mine! Thats why i love all these videos honestly! I can hear what my snare will sound like if i decide to go real tight or loose.

When i started playing drums i had no idea how those things that you just mention was important to the sound of snare. In the beginning i was told that the reso head has to be table top tight and snares tighten as much can... since i started watching your videos i understand that reso head as well as snare wires dont have to be super high or tight to make you snare sound awesome even if I want that high crispy sound! I just wish i knew all those thing wayy before! Hand down guys for work that you guys putting into education new probably self learn drummers! 🙌🏻🙌🏻. One thing that can show how you guys educate drummers is that i had my very first snare drum Yamaha stage custom steel just taken out of closet just yesterday. I put that snare apart clean everything than i put everything back together, put new drum heads as well as snare wires... I gotta say this cheap snare drum looks and sound as good as the one i use daily and which is 7 times more expensive than the yamaha snare! I was thinking of selling that yamaha snare drum but now im sure it's staying with me! You guys are truly amazing! 🙏🏻

Hey, have you guys done a video on drumsticks yet? How do they impact tone/sound? Particularly - different wood types?

Cory, How do you know if you have Over Tightened the Snare side head? I use an Evans 300 clear and in my zealousness to tune my DW Brass 14 X 6.5 Snare, I may have gone beyond Table Top Tight. I seem to be getting a poor Crackle out of the Snare tuned at high tunings.

I started out with having the snare side head cranked. Watching these videos I decided to try the reso head tuned lower but I end up with snare buzz no matter how tight the wires are. Like they aren't even tight. Any tips?

Hi, maybe you’ve done what I’ve done earlier, slightly misinterpret what “tight” and “loose” are on your drum. What I’ve found is when most people talk about “tight tension” it means you really have to fight to tighten the tension lugs more, it’s literally hard physical work to do it. At the other end, if I go for a super loose tuning like say for a low tom, ie without wires the drum sounds like a tom, then the wires can sound weird, I think that’s the slow vibration of the head and the faster vibration of the wires conflict. On my drums, the good tension is within 2-3 notes. For one it’s from a D, from another it’s from an E. Hope that helps, good luck!

You may have already stretched the head beyond use. Returning a snare side head to a lower tension after using it at a cranked tension even for a couple days can be nearly impossible. A fresh snare side head is a good start.

@@rylannumrich6724 Yeah, That Happened to me Too. I Table Top Tightened the Reso head (as so many say to do! Except Cory) and then de-tune it and it becomes apparent it may be over stretched. As only a "beginner" at Drum Tuning, The snares I have are the Most Challenging. I keep trying to attain the Tones I hear on You Tube videos including this one. What I have come to realize is the affects of Miking the drums (which I don't do - playing at Home for recreation) has a big impact on what I hear on Videos. I struggle with getting that "Sweet Sound", changing Batter heads, re-tuning, etc. trying ti match the sounds I hear on the Videos including this one!

I've been playing for 20 years, and tuning a snare is still a bit of a mystery. My snare tuning ends in a thought "I guess that's good enough🤷🏻‍♂️"
