We’ve tried different thicknesses of reso heads on toms in the past with great results. We’ve even been responsible for developing new thinner-than-standard reso heads for toms. But today we’re stepping into the unknown with the thinnest rests we’ve ever used on toms…3mil snare side heads. Spoiler alert: they’re great!

Agreed. IMO, you need a delta between the batter and reso. On my jazz kit I have Diplomat Fiberskyn on the batters (7.5mil + 3mil fiber) which is a popular jazz head. On the resos I use the Diplomat Skyntone (5mil + 3mil fiber) to get a decent delta. Remo used to make a head called Diplomat M5 (5mil) but they stopped making it a few years ago. Now, except for the snare side heads, the Skyntone is the thinnest head they make.

@@jc3drums916 I did!!! Dip Fiberskyn: 7.5 + 3 = 10.5mil & Dip Skyntone: 5 + 3 = 8mil. That's a delta of 2.5mil. Most jazz guys use Dip Fiberskyn (10.5mil) on batter with Amb (10mil) on reso. That's a delta of only 0.5mil. If you're referring to the Diplomat M5, that was available only clear or coated, so 5mil.

Not sure I’d want to take it to this extreme, but this does make me want to give 7mil resos (and 2mil on snare) next time I replace heads. Seems worth trying out as my touch has significantly softened over the years.

This is the kind of thing that makes me love this channel. On some drum and drumming channels, if it gets a mention at all, the SOUNDS your drums make is just sort of taken for granted. It's assumed that you know how to tune and use your drums, and that you have them tuned just the way you want them. Here, I get a deep dive every week. And I love it. This one was a fascinating exploration of something I'd never even heard of, much less considered. For someone who needs a good articulation and a musical tone at low volume, this would be a perfect thing to implement. As always, thanks Cody and Ben. The sound of every episode is absolutely pristine (to the extent that KZfaq's compression makes that possible) on your end, and with my good cans on, it sounds pretty darn good.

Thanx guys🙏🏻 I found that even 7mil made my toms sound too thin, in my opinion. But I won’t use anything else other than a 3mil on my 13x13 snom. I can’t get it into my preferred interval range due to the snare side not going low enough but it still gets a great floor tom and snom tone for what I’m doin.

Very interesting segment, I'd never considered using 3 ml resos on toms. To my ears, the toms did have a short sustain, and a "muddy" sound, which wasn't unpleasant. My current set up is Evans Onyx 2-ply batter, with Evans EC's as resos on rack and floor toms, specifically to shorten sustain, and give the sound a touch of "darkness", without having to tune the toms too low, so as to maintain attack, and not lose rebound. Great video, thanks Ben and Cody.

@@dalekay9ine Yes, I have a birch kit, too. But, I've used EC2 resos on another kit, and the same result, a more controlled sound. I'm considering trying coated heads as resos when it's time to change, they also shorten resonance = sustain. Cheers.

This video reminded me that about a year ago, I bought clear Remo Emperor (2 ply) to try using as a resonant head on my 14" floor tom. Curious to see if I can get a lower pitch/shorter sustain out of the drum without tuning so low that it feels like I'm playing on a wet pillow. Hopefully I'll have some free time to mess around with it before I completely forget about it again, haha!

The thin reso's really sing nicely. Perhaps not the best for a really heavy hitter, but I like the open sound. Perhaps they would sound more powerful in a recording situation without slamming the drums, and might work better for thinner shells in smaller rooms.

Interesting experiment. I tried the Evans Reso 7 when they came out a few years ago and felt they created a noticeably thinner tom sound that I wasn’t a fan of. (You also lose the ability to swap heads around) Idk, I like a warm, fat tom sound (typically use coated 10mil resos) and the loss of some of that is a negative for me.

The Genera Resonant heads utilize a 10mil film as well but it's different from the film used for the G1. They have a brighter response than the G1 and make for a great pairing with two-ply batters (but you can use them with anything, of course).

This is all relative from a mass perspective. For example, if you're using G2 (14mil two-ply) batters and decide to check out the Snare Side 500 heads, those have roughly the same relationship (in terms of mass) as the Snare Side 300 when paired with the G1 batter.

Interesting concept. Have you guys ever tried the Evans EC Resos? Kinda the opposite. I use them on my gig rig with EC2 batters with the idea of getting lower tones out of smaller drums at a lower volume than "standard" resos and G1 or G2 batters on bigger drums. It's obviously a compromise situation specific to the small venues I normally play in, but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

Thanks for the kind words! It may seem like some mystical secret or maybe it's the gear but really we just take the time to get the sounds before recording. Now, we film at least once a week in the same space with the same gear (and I'm recording and filming here several more times each week) and have been doing that for six years now so we've actually improved just by doing. It only takes a couple of minutes to tune up and get sounds in most cases. In a situation like this, we got the drums in tune and made small, incremental adjustments, testing the results as we went. This patient and methodical approach has never failed us. Cheers! -Ben

Not to interject, but having experience recording drums on a regular basis, I would also add that there is a degree of extra snare buzz that is heard in the room, but does not get picked up when micing drums in an audible way. Because of the way the drums are isolated from each other, and because the overhead microphones are just a piece of that equation, being as far away from the snare as they are, this can change the perception of snare buzz as well from the listeners perspective.. i’m not sure if this is an accurate assessment in this case, but just figured I’d offer . Great video guys! Always interesting sounds

Ah, yes! Mils are the standard unit of measure for polyester film (the material drumheads are made out of). Lots of people mistakenly abbreviate this as "mm" or even just "m" but both are incorrect. 3mil is, as you mentioned, 0.003" or three one thousandths of an inch.
