This video pointed out to me why my reference drawings take like 30-40 minutes. . .I go straight for the boxes instead of doing the gesture, so I then spend like half the time fixing my anatomy mistakes or redrawing half of the pose for being too static. Or even better, go straight for complex shapes and give the person the ability to knee themselves in the face. Thanks for the vid!

It makes sense, there could be others with more experience, also he wasn't always as good as what you're seeing now(according to their standards and also experience wise). He got better because of those rejections which is the best thing you can do after that. As for box drawing, I think it is still very useful for a beginner to grasp the nuances of perspective on boxes and then move on the sth higher level, such as implementing that knowledge on recreating a human figure.

I've been shuffling a lot of different art tutorials but you definetely nail the point... these are just tools and sketching it's about simplifying and making things easy to read on a basic level, there are no hard rules on solids that you have to use to "sketch in the right way" just what you need to get it done!!

Thank you so much for this video 😭 I haven't studied figure drawing in any great depth, nor am I into animation, but your advice helped me understand the process a bit better. There's a lot of "phases" involved that I didn't really take into account when drawing. I work traditionally (mostly pen) so I was wondering how could I use the "overpass" method? Is it basically just using a pencil underdrawing to do the same thing? Or is redrawing the whole thing also an option? I feel like both are good tbh.

In case Toniko reads comments. Need advice. I am on my final year in animation university. Gotta make up the idea for the diploma. I just cant. Feel like everyone knows what they are doing and i am the only one left behind. I never fully finished previous cartoons so i know i have to just pick some idea already and make it simple but the more i work with all my ideas the more frustrated i get and less i know which is suitable for the diploma. I know that it s just stress messing my me and i will probably fix this problem sometime soon and make up a good idea but mayve you can give advice to a noob like me...
@Zodiacman16
@Zodiacman16 3 жыл бұрын
This sounds like FOBO, or fear of better options. I'm not an animator, but why not pick one idea for your main project and do the others as side projects? This is what I'm doing as a programmer since I have one very important project I need to finish by the end of the year, but also have a bunch of fun things I want to code on the side.
@diogobernardino54
@diogobernardino54 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry if this sounds rude, but how can you be a noob in the last year of university? It just sounds like you didn't work for it. Considering you don't really know what your doing, I'm just gonna say this: don't worry too much about the story, create a short that allows you to practice your animation skills. That didn't sound exactly like I wanted it to, so I'll try to explain better. Don't worry if the story isn't the best or if it doesn't make much sense. What matters the most in your situation is to be good at animation, otherwise you won't be able to do it as a job (like I assume you want to). Other than that, practice a lot, and try your best to have fun.
@heyisubbed
@heyisubbed 3 жыл бұрын
@@diogobernardino54 I don't think it's helpful to question how hard they worked or whether they know what they're doing. It's perfectly normal for someone at any level to get stuck in a cycle of overthinking or writer's block.
@heyisubbed
@heyisubbed 3 жыл бұрын
I have a couple suggestions. If you're looking for an idea, I suggest pulling inspiration from books/shows/movies that you like. Or take inspiration from an old memory, an emotion you have, or a dream you wish to achieve. New ideas are actually just mash-ups of old ideas/experiences. If you build one by combining things you like or that are personal to you, I'm sure you'll be more excited to stick with it. But either way, I'm sure your ideas are perfectly fine. In the grand scheme of things this project isn't as scary or life-altering as your mind would have you believe. Good luck, from a fellow perfectionist. Edit: Also, setting deadlines for each step in the process is a handy way to motivate yourself out of any potential cycles of overthinking.

I would disagree and add that drawing cubes and cylinders in 3 point perspective, from reference, has greatly helped me to improve my ability to draw form in perspective, no matter the subject. important to note that if you dont use reference, you wont get any better but using reference, then drawing from imagination is key.

I'd love to hear the opinion of an animator on cliche animation techniques. I'm no artist, I'm a writer, but I used to create stick-figure animations, and if I do say so myself, I was pretty exceptional at push-pull, build-up and cool-down, _et cetera._ Even without drawing skills, I understood how to make an animation have a slick, solid feel. (Of course, I made dozens of animations, so practice was naturally involved.) An example of a cliche would be like what is seen in the Crayon Dragon animation: You have the characters perform isolated movements in a jerky, exaggerated style. The movements don't really flow into each other, they're all discrete and disconnected, which looks pleasing to the average person because the animation is smooth, but to someone who has animated himself, I know the _exact_ thought-process and feeling of doing this kind of thing, and it smacks, at least to me, of either a novice, or someone who never tried to think beyond the obvious.
