Surprisingly effective and concise exposition. I feel like I gained musical IQ points listening to this. I felt there was more there than just fugues - maybe chorales, sonatas also. I especially liked the way you explained how to join each exposition.

I’ve always thought that a fugue had to have a counter subject. This sounded a little like a chorale harmonization with modulations and episodes thrown in. Still you gave a clear explanation of how to improvise using a simple theme.

When you start the second part of the exposition and you “come in on the dominant” is that a melody created from the Dominant key in relation to true initial tonic?
@changheelee34093 жыл бұрын
Great question! This is simply a transposition of the original subject to the dominant key, which we call the answer. Since there are no additional changes to the subject, we call this a real answer. Sometimes, we need to make a small (tonal) adjustment to the answer, but the answer is always based on the subject.

Thank you! How do you keep all the voices independent?
@changheelee34094 жыл бұрын
Derpy Hooves First, and most importantly, be able to play the harmonic progressions in the fugue in keyboard style (bass note in the left hand, the rest in the right hand) or chorale style (2+2). This helps to create good voice-leading, which in turn makes the voices independent. Then, you can add some simple embellishments to one voice at a time. Without the harmonic progression clearly imprinted in your mind, the embellishments on the surface will become more complicated than necessary.
@derpyhooves57954 жыл бұрын
Changhee Lee so you’re saying that before we can start improvising the fugue, we need to be able to improvise a four voice kind of chorale style progression? It seems like this would be difficult to improvise the voice leading for this. Would it be worthwhile to just memorize a written out note-by-note harmonic progression to ensure good voice leading?
@derpyhooves57954 жыл бұрын
Sorry if that was confusing and thank you for your reply
@changheelee34094 жыл бұрын
@@derpyhooves5795 Yes, I would say it is fine to write out your harmonization at first. (By the way, using keyboard style and contrary motion will definitely help your voice-leading.) You can use the same harmonization when you transpose to other keys. Try to at least perform the transpositions without looking at your harmonization. You can also start with a simple two-voice texture if you would like. (Yes, you can have a two-voice fugue!) To make sure that the two parts are independent and invertible, use a mix of octaves, 3rds, and 6ths between the two parts. (You can use the same intervals when transposing to other keys.) I hope this helps!
