A common problem intermediate drummers experience is the ability to play more creative, punchy drum fills. The secret ingredient? Include the bass drum! Brandon Toews has put together three fills that focus on two note bass drum groupings. 8th note triplets, 16th notes, AND 32nd notes are all covered!
Want more fill ideas? Make your drum fills go boom!

I'm a self-learning play by hear to songs kind of guy. I don't mimic the songs playing. I try to feel the rhythm and do what I want and just have fun, I have yet to actually learn a song but I have been doing this for about 3 years now for about an hour a day. It's just fun and I love drums. I have seen myself progress and understand more. I've always used a kick when doing a fill, I never really gave it thought. But that last example you gave, I don't know what to call it, but I probably do it too much in my drumming. I thought it wasn't even a thing and I'm really glad to have that validated, even though I over use it while doing my own thing to songs, lol. Thanks for the vid

Last weekend I got myself asking a similar question addressed on this video: When I sit on my kit, hit some play-along and play what comes to my mind, I hardly ever use kick/hi-hat on the fills. Why? My best guess is because I'm not taking too much attention on use it when I really practice. Coincidentally, Drumeo posts a lesson about it! Wow! Once again, thanks Drumeo! PS:Brandon, you did a great job, but you look really, really nervous man (almost like Jared Falk on FreeDrumLessons's first videos :) )! Relax a little, drum is about fun!

+Drumeo Well for this one it won't matter much. But if you have a fast drummer or complicated drumming it should be beneficial. Then you can slow down the video to 30 fps and have a proper slowmotion. Maybe you could make a few more test videos. Could be short ones like this one here. I suppose live streaming in 60 fps would be a problem because of the higher demand on bandwidth and the need for more processing power. Also if you want to sell the videos on DVD or Bluray I guess you need to convert them to 30 fps. meh... digital distribution is the future.

I'm surprised that the hi-hat foot is not mentioned at all, that would be my number 1 point to incorporate the feet, never stop the HH foot(obviously within musical context). For some odd reason it seems to me that a large percent of drummers stop playing time with the HH foot whenever they play a fill or anything outside a groove/straight time context for that matter, it blows my mind. None the less ones not limited to the HH foot only keeping time, there's plenty of creative applications for the HH, for instance Jojo Mayer's track with Nerve - "7even". Imo some issue seems to be that most drummers either aren't aware of what's possible with the HH foot or just don't want to develop the independence b/c it's too much work on top of three other limbs. I will agree with Thomas Lang's concept that you should incorporate all limbs into any & all exercises b/c the added coordination challenge will save you time in the long run by practicing the pattern w/HH, as oppose to w/o the HH.

Yeah I have a friend who sets his hats in a slightly open sloshy position and just always leaves them there. He's a good metal drummer but lacks the left foot time keeping ability and the cool dynamics you can get with stepped hat note.

Good point. One of the best (understated) fills I've heard is on a Prince track - Head I think - with two HH hits on the 14th and 16th, er, 16th notes and a splash on the 1. Slightly off the point but hey.

Great video, very helpful. I liked that this video was a little closer to my skill level and these fills seem achievable to me. These shorter videos make me feel like I can learn something in a single practice, as opposed to an hour-long video by a drum master that can often leave me feeling bewildered and down on myself. To the host - You didn't make me feel dumb, so thank you. It is easy to connect with your presentation.

Helpful and useful lesson, thank you! These are cool ideas and the fills are at a level where I can start using them after a bit of practice. The fill with the 32nd note bass drum pickup will be a bit more challenging, as I haven't played 32nd BD notes like that before.

for the 30 sec notes on bass drum. does it have to be slide technique?
@davidcipolla4036
@davidcipolla4036 8 жыл бұрын
32nd notes* and no, ones not limited to the sliding technique for fast double strokes. Heel down works and heel-toe works extremely well for fast doubles on the bass b/c you don't have to exert as much energy with heel-toe as opposed to heel up & maybe heel down as well but I'm not proficient heel down player, although I still do think heel-toe conserves more energy than heel down, ergo heel-toe allows for incredible speed b/c large muscles aren't used and saves on energy/effort exerted allowing one to play longer & faster (imo speed should not be a concern unless matched with practical application, not just for the sake that you're able "play fast")
@larrytate1657
@larrytate1657 8 жыл бұрын
Try each technique and see which one works with your body and style best and which one your already possibly kind of doing. Imo experience don't waste too much time practicing a technique that doesn't seem to work with your body. I know drummers who never practiced a technique at all and only practiced the goal and their feet figured it out on their own.
