How to disconnect and install a lawn sprinkler pump.
This Pump services a 3 zone system, all pvc piping. Borner residential home. At some point in the lifespan of any type of sprinkler pump, it is likely to need maintenance or repairs and Replacement, so it's helpful to know in advance how to disconnect it and install a lawn sprinkler pump. Irrigation water can come from a well, natural body of water or a cistern that collects rainwater from the roof. What these sources have in common is the requirement of a pump to pressurize the irrigation system.
1 Turn off the power supply to the pump. Most systems use a pump start relay switch wired to the irrigation controller that activates the pump each time the controller opens a valve. If this is the case, unplug the controller and the power will be disconnected to the pump. If the pump is plugged into an electrical outlet, rather than hard-wired to the circuit, simply unplug it from the outlet. In any other configuration, it is necessary to locate the circuit breaker that controls the pump and flip it to the "Off" position.
2 Unscrew and or pull the plugged type that hold each electrical wire to the terminals on the pump and remove the wires. On most pumps, the wire connections are behind a metal plate or covering that must be removed first. Typically, a couple small screws must be loosened to remove the cover.
3 For PVC connection with no couplings cut the inlet pipe with an hacksaw close ti the fitting
4 Unscrew the other fitting from the pump, which goes to the sprinklers.
5 Remove any screws or bolts that hold the pump to the floor. These pass through holes in the base of the pump, but are not always used. The pump can now be removed for repair.
The new pump we installed is GOULDS Pumps GT20 IRRI-Gator Self-Priming Single Phase Centrifugal Pump, 2 hp, Blue.
7 Things You Will Need
 Screwdriver
 Hacksaw
 Fine sandpaper: amzn.to/2S4AhbC
 Pvc primer
 Pvc cement or glue
 Pipe wrench or channel lock plier
 Pvc pipes and fittings depending on your system
 Waterproof marker
Tips
Warning
 If there is any doubt about whether the power supply to the pump has been disconnected successfully, contact a licensed electrician for help before disconnecting the pump and to reconnect the new one.

Comments from a plumber: 1) Orange Glue is for CPVC. For PVc, you use clear, grey or blue glue 2) if you read the instructions on the can, you will see that you are supposed to add glue while there primer is still WET. Otherwise, for a DYIer, you do very neat work

@@jostrander71 u.s motors has gotten better over the years but you are right it was a rocky start but we hi pot every motor before it goes on a pump and we also water test every single pump that leaves the factory, and it’s more then just run water through them….we monitor head pressure vs watts at three different points and also hydro test every pump for leaks , I am a systems technician and built the test / assembly stations for our jet lines …it’s pretty cool to see our pumps being used in real life applications and not gonna lie makes me feel proud and I’m grateful that people use them

A good video about your new pump installation. I put in some PVC plumbing pipes a number of years ago but don't recall there was a primer to apply first before applying the cement. Thank you for sharing.
@JohnCRV
@JohnCRV 5 жыл бұрын
According to the specialists;"The purpose of primer is to begin the chemical reaction that softens PVC and to provide an even prepped surface for the solvent cement. As you may know, PVC joints are not glued together exactly, but fused through a chemical change. The softer the outer layer of your PVC, the better it will cement in your joint." It is a good idea to use a union on intake connection, do you don’t have to cut the pipe to remove pump!
@JohnCRV

Thank you for your opinion. If we were living in freezing areas of the country its a good idea to use them so you can take the pump down in winters....... No freezing winters here in Florida, a good pump can last 30 years, I don't think a coupling will last that long in the sun. There's a good chance you will have to cut all the pvc anyway for different reasons, the main one is, you will not find the same pump in 10, 20 or 30 years. This is just my opinion.

Wouldn’t it make sense to install unions just incase pump replacement is needed?
@JohnCRV
@JohnCRV 11 ай бұрын
the more unions the more chances of leaks or suck up air and loose prime. Also depends in what part of the country you're in.... if you need to winterize during below zero weather may be couplings or unions are better for you....

Curious as to why you bolted the pump on after you installed the pvc pipe?

I have a gator, much like the one in the video. It came with the house recently purchased. Pump works great, but connection between pump and irrigation system is gone. I picked up 1 1/2 " PVC threaded which fit great into the irrigation side, but could not get a 1 1/2" to thread onto the top of the gator. Should the same 1 1/2 " threaded PVC also fit into the top of the pump? If so, could it be a problem with the threads or do I need a different coupler?
@JohnCRV
@JohnCRV 4 жыл бұрын
It may be a different size or the thread may be rusty. Try cleaning it with a small wire brush like the round ones used for battery terminals. Hope this helps.

@@JohnCRV awesome video. Thank you so much. I use lake water for my pump, which has a check valve. Is it necessary with this pump model that suppose to self-prime?

That pump is 1-1/2 but why is it reduced right after the tee on the top? I was told by Gould’s that the irrigator doesn’t like to be reduced!
@JohnCRV
@JohnCRV 4 жыл бұрын
The reducer is for the the 2 inch inlet pipe (coming from the lake) and the thread is for is reduced to 1 1/2 inch to fit the pump. The same way.the original pump was. I hope that answers your question.

John C RV I meant on the tee fitting on the output. It looks like there is a reducer bushing going from 1-1/2 to what looks like 1-1/4? Where the ball valve is!
