Really good video. When I was an apprentice with SEGAS in 1968, we we're taught that it was a circulator and not a pump lol😂

Yup it’s a Circulation Pump. A Pump by definition discharges into an open end. These are Circulators.

Hi Derek very good as usual, have seen some great one, ie the vent pipe going up nearly to the top off the roof and back down😂 or the vent below the tank water level, a good video would be noise in central heating, ie clicking , rushing, banging , pump speed to high or low

Thanks again for your ever great videos. Based on the comments, please make a video about how to set correct speed for the pump and I found a Wilo pump a customer wanted to replace and found setting up the correct settings very hard.

Another great tutorial. Looking at the comments, a common theme is what pump speed setting, how to set ABV up in the real world, balancing etc.If you are fitting a new modulating CH pump as opposed to an old fixed speed (with speed 3 settings) do you set up your ABV differently?. Thanks again.Keep em comin👍

Well one hundred homes , was always a building site a hundred ohms is a measure of electrical resistance . LOL . Nice video , I live in a bungalow the boiler is on the garage wall and the pump is in the airing cupboard ? vent off the boiler straight to the EXPANSION TANK IN THE ROOF . Cold feed direct to the boiler , 🤔

I was taught 35 years ago. 22mm pipe from flow all the way up and over the fe. Tank. Then 22mm cold feed down and no further than 150mm apart. But bring it back down to middle of airing cupboard. There you can put the pump on what we call a. H. Pump pulls down on cold feed. Loads of systems I see are piped up wrong. And pumps left on 3. Which pump over and draw air in.

Very nice. I have installed a sealed system but vaillant pure heat only has changed the flow and return. Flow is normally left. Now the system is not working? Do I have to change flow and return, please? (I know punp is pushing the other way around, but in heat only boilers, it shouldn't matter. Please show some light on it. (Flow and retun on heat only boilers doesnit matter) Kind regards Indy Singh

Fountain of knowledge here. Will you ever do wiring videos? Combis / S plan / y plan / hives / nests. Multiple zones. Wiring & fault finding is the biggest enemy of gas engineers.

The problem with these Alpha “ smart “ pumps on old large systems that may be a bit sludged up is that it will sense the resistance and decrease in power leaving the furthest rads Luke warm or cold , that’s why I will always fit a 25-60 130 3 speed as a replacement on these bigger 3 foor type systems otherwise I know that I will get the dreaded phone call to tell me some rads are cold..... 👍

Excellent advice Tom, I find alot of old s plan systems with no automatic bypass, the customer gets a new boiler installed and wonders why it always overheats, I go to alot of jobs where the pump has been replaced and set at speed 3 or speed 1 and further issues arise, radiators constantly needing to be bled or overflow pipes dripping are a sure sign of a badly installed pump or other issues such as no bypass or some customers get a trv fitted to the bypass rad not knowing the true purpose of that rads use, sludged up systems is my biggest problem when trying to explain to a customer that they might need a very expensive power flush, I go to alot of old open vented system that have been converted to a pressurised system and new rads have been installed but one or two rads never heat up, usually down to the balancing of the system, can you provide a video on how to properly balance different systems, thanks Tom, keep the videos coming mate!… 👍👍👍👍

16:30 on a Y plan system, you will need an auto by-pass if all the rads have TRV's fitted. (I have seen a few systems like that - all TRV/smart TRV). good vid tho, keep up the good work.
@tomkatgastraining
@tomkatgastraining 9 ай бұрын
I was waiting for this comment under the building regs document L the radiator in the room with the stat must not have a TRV. So if the system is installed correctly there is no need for an automatic bypass on a Y plan. 👍🏻
@dazl7954
@dazl7954 9 ай бұрын
@@tomkatgastraining agreed, but as we all know these DIY customers and some builders may (move the stat if it is an RF one to a non rad location - or even get it removed, or remove the rad from that room and such like). then all we can do is advise - to which they will ignore. and you just feel you have wasted your time telling them. but cracking vid tho...

@@dazl7954 most TRVs are set to 5 anyway which means fully open so the pump will always have a path back 🙄👍🏻
@TheDickPuller
@TheDickPuller 9 ай бұрын
On a Y Plan there’s always an open port, the B port. So no Bypass required. A mid Poss Valve will rest closing the last ‘call’ port, so A will close when the demand for CH stops.
@dazl7954
@dazl7954 9 ай бұрын
@@TheDickPuller when in heating only. Only the heating port is open. So, if all rads have trv valves on, and these are closed by temp or user. And the ch turns off. The valve will stay in that position and the boiler will go into pump overrun. So, where will it overrun to? Valve in ch position. All trv valves closed?? As port B is irrelevant!

With regards to an automatic bypass using an Erp pump will the modulating pump have enough oomph to open the bypass at the end of the heating cycle being that the pump will have lowered it's speed?
@tomkatgastraining
@tomkatgastraining 9 ай бұрын
This is why it’s important that the bypass is also set up correctly so it will open.

Well explained and lots of detail. I would take issue with you saying water in the pump lubricates it . Water has no lubrication qualities whatsoever.
@tomkatgastraining

If the bearings dry out they seize so the bearings are kept lubricated by the water unless you can come up with another word than lubricated.

Low Energy circulation pumps or ERP(a EU term 💩) is a modulating circulator, with PWM controlling the Speed of the centrifugal circulator. It will drop back speed according to resistance & modulate accordingly. PWM circulators tend to be less reliable than fixed head ones, due to the ‘on-board’ PCB.
