I always feel for a professional it's just another job. It's the same with working on your car, a garage has the official know-how of mechanics etc, but your car is just another one in a sea of hundreds worked on every day. Doing things yourself gives you a natural drive to want the best looking finish possible.

I like how you explain: clearly and to the point in addition to the charming English accent😊I may do this project for my back garden in future. This weekend though I have to install a dog flap on my back uPVC door. I guess my main struggle will be the adjustment of the door panel thickness to the larger depth of the dog flap.

The electrician that originally installed our light, wired it directly in to the light itself, so was always a bit difficult to get the light replaced each time. So I added a junction box. I come here to learn how to do it and I found this incredibly helpful. You are a born teacher. Thank you so much for posting this.

The issue about using a sealant on the rear transit cable hole is exactly the concern I had after watching the video. The way it was left had seriously compromised the IP rating of the JB. An alternative would have been to use one of the side ports with a gland to pass the power supply cable through.

quick question. I'm looking to install some outside lights to be powered by a plug and socket, rather than wired into a lighting circuit. However, the outside all lights I bought do not have an earth connection, and the instructions say it is not required (the lights are made of plastic, not a metal construction, if that makes a difference). So there is just a live and neutral. Is it ok to just use a live and neutral on the plug, and to leave the earth pin empty?

That's dependant on what your drilling into but I'm most cases a SDS drill is preferable. Measure the depth of hole that you need to make and then put a piece of insulation tape around the drill bit at the required depth. Stop drilling once you reach the piece of tape 👍
