How to install a smart switch the RIGHT way

Replacing a switch with a smart switch is safe and easy if you do it right. We'll take you step by step through the proper switch wiring of line, load, neutral and ground wires for installing a Leviton smart switch. Plus we have helpful tips for installing three-way switches and more.
Please read your instruction carefully before installing any smart switch or wiring a switch yourself. And consult an electrician if you are unsure about anything. And if something does go wrong, definitely don't blame me.

Writing the breaker number on the back of the wall plate can save you some hassle down the road if you need to replace/upgrade the switch. (But agree - always use the noncontact tester!)

Just a note if you are using Wago pull test the wires after lock down There are different makers of Wago switches and I have gone from connectors that lock down like a croc biting down to versions where connectors that seem to be grasping lightly with two feathers.

I'm personally a big fan of the Zooz switches and dimmers. They are reliable, inexpensive, flexible, and have great support. They also work with smart bulbs

these days, there are a number of three-way smart switches which are wired just like the dumb switch. this is an area where there's been a lot of progress in the last few years, so I'd update the 3 way video

Ha! Gotcha, thanks! I thought I was getting ambushed by the No Fun Police and got a little jumpy. I don’t understand the attitude that you shouldn’t be able to joke about serious things. I take raising my kids as serious as can be and I joke about that all the time.
