Nice looking door. With the original door, all doors require annual maintenance or checks at minimum for tight sealing and shifting around the locking areas; it is one of the things home owners under maintain. And so, nice to see the detail of this installation since it covers a lot of knowledge on the subject!

@icemancometh8679
@icemancometh8679 Жыл бұрын
Hahaha! Come to my house! I built the back porch and the back door has two posts on each side- yeah if that sucker ain't out of Plum and an odd size I don't know what is. I had to replace the door and went looking for whatever I could find but wanted one with glass. It's a plant porch room. So I found a door that would work cut it to fit and it's not carpentry work let's say. So anyway the door was painted black on one side. I said who would paint a door black? My cousin helped me and he said black doors matter. 😁
@icemancometh8679
@icemancometh8679 Жыл бұрын
Everyone's commenting Tom should come to their house so I had to tell my story. I built a plant porch onto the back of my house. I made the opening to the back door with posts on each side set in concrete and then attached the door to them with hinges. I'm not a carpenter by any means but could cut the door to fit. I now realize I need to redo it and put in a frame then a door because right now there's plastic bags shoved in all the way around it and I don't use it. LOL! Outside it has a storm door- hey when it's this messed up you got to try to fight the drafts- when I first put it on it was fitting good but with time gaps form around it cuz of movement I guess. Someone said Tommy should come to their house - he'd have a field day at mine. Well this isn't right- who did this? Um, uh. I plead the fifth! 😁

I liked how contemporary the old door was & fitting to the house. I don’t know why it’d be replaced.
@Mike__B
@Mike__B 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, seemed like the problems of the old door were minor. Glass frosts up, ok in the grand scheme of things I doubt that is that much of a problem for heating, air gets in around the door... so seal it up better, door handle doesn't work... so replace it. Nah lets install a new door, and with that new door we need to seal up around the door, and install a new handle and lock, but hey at least those tiny panes of glass are insulated glass!

I liked the old door a lot better. And I can see why it was leaking air, no insulation around it when they took off the casing/trim inside. Personally I'd have fixed the door knob and put on a storm door to help stop the draft.

I have been all over U-TUBE looking for an exterior door video that covers the typical Florida home with a stucco finish. I haven't been able to find any that properly cover it, but this video covers what I think I'll need to do on my house. Back cut the stucco on the outside. Remove the trim on the inside and cut the screws/nails. Remove the door frame and reinstall from the inside.. Well, I hope that is correct!!!! I sure wish you guys would make a trip to Florida!!!! ;)

This probably should have mentioned the additional need for step/drip flashing at head if new brick mold, flashing tape studs at least the bottom of the stud, provide a sill pan under the threshold….if this door didn’t have a canopy over it, water proofing would be very different.

You absolutely have to install longer hinge screws for security and to keep the door from sagging. Most prehung doors come with a tag advising the purchaser that the 1/2 inch screws are there to aide transport and installation only. Then again, that kwikset lock won't keep anyone out anyway.

Can somebody out there explain to me why my Therma-tru fiberglass door with a solid wood core leaks? Weirdest thing, moisture is showing up on the hinge side of the door below the first hinge. Wood is rotted between the fiberglass sandwich really bad at the bottom. It's rotted by almost half an inch deep. It does have a rubber weather seal around the door as well as a seal under the door to block moisture and air at the threshold. I need to know why it's leaking and rotting the wood between the fiberglass. Thanks for all your input.

A brad nailer is typically 18 gauge and a finish nailer is 16 or 15 gauge, the smaller the gauge the thicker and more sturdy the nail, if you want to keep things simple just get a 16 gauge nailer, it works for most things.

This is a "This Old House" video. It isn't a how-to. It's for people who....well...I'm not entirely sure who it's for. But it's far from a proper how-to.
