How to Replace An Exterior Door | Start to Finish Front/Back Door Install

In this video, I help my friend Jon replace the front exterior door of his house. Jon decided that he wanted to install a new front door because he noticed that he had a damaged door jamb because of high winds. I show you how to measure for a new door, figure out the rough opening for the door, and replace the old door with a new one. We do some work, we have some laughs and by the end of the video, he has a new front door!

I missed something. Your nails you said were temporary but they never did come out and did you nail anywhere else . I just saw screws on the hinges only? Did I miss something but very educational. Thanks.

WOW - GREAT video, well made, lots of useful details. I bought a front door at Home Depot, got 3 estimates from handy men on line (ranged from $700 to $1,200). Thanks to this video i was able to replace my back door yesterday with minimal frustration. Thank you. I only encountered a couple of stripped screws and a bit of loose/broken sheet rock behind the border that i had to deal with. Thanks again

I finished the door yesterday, I did everything you did with the exception that the door wouldn't close correctly at the bottom. I had to also you a square ruler to square the door. This truly was a two-man job, great to have nice neighbors that came to help me 👍

It’s been over 15 years since I replaced three doors on my house, sure could have used this video as a training aid. Most of my information I learned from This Old House and other shows like it. Original doors were just old enough to need replacement and the previous owners had them painted black, with a glass storm door, talk about overheating the space in between.. Built a new shed with a service door, that one went in a lot easier because of new construction. Nice video.

Thank you for this video. I was going to pay someone to install my new door. It's a 6-inch wide opening and I ordered the correct width left inswing. This is the only video that goes through all the steps in depth. Thank you sooo much. I have watched your other videos too so I was psyched that there was one specific to the front door. The backdoor on my house is 60 years old and was recently kicked in so it definitely needs replaced for safety reasons. I hate the idea of hiring people to do things that I could learn so I really appreciate this video.

My wife volunteered me today to replace an exterior door for a friend. I've installed exterior doors on my house, but have never had to replace one. This was incredibly helpful. Very step by step, answering every question I had (how to remove external trim, start installing the new door on the hinge side, insulation). You are a natural teacher. Thanks!

I'm just now able to watch this. I learned a lot about installing a door. There's a lot more to it than just taking it off and putting it back on. Sorry, I was in the bed sick for a week and I felt yucky. It's that time of the year. I love the new door too. It matches the house. Very pretty. 😁

Great video. I had no clue how to install a new door + frame. Watching this video gave me the confidence to try it myself. It may have taken me 5 or 6 hours. But I did it by mself. It may not be perfect but it works.

Cover your interior finished floors with something...A drop cloth, a bedsheet, towels, Anything...One scratch and you'll wish you did.

So at 18:32, when putting the Protecto Wrap on (sounds kinda like a super hero?) the corner, would it make sense to put the corner patch on first so the longer piece of PW would shed water over the patch instead of hitting at the seam? Not sure I explained that right...
