I fairly detailed video on how I installed my wood burning stove in my steel building. The building is about 1000 square feet, not insulated and is well heated by this little stove. This is in no way meant to be an instructional video, only an overview of what I did in my agricultural non-code rated building.

Just want to say thank you! I know this video was made 5 years ago and I’ve been watching you a long time! I’m a 61 year old woman and I have a 30x50 pole barn with metal roof! After watching your video- I knew I could do this! And did finally this last weekend! Because of your video saying just do it. 🔥

Found this video at just the right time--I'm putting in a chimney pipe for my blacksmithing forge in my not-really-to-code-either smithy in the backyard. You answered ALL my questions and showed just the right amount of detail for me to feel like I can do this myself! Hell, I already built the whole 8x8 smithy myself! Not bad for a 52-year-old lady!

If you shine a light thru the pipe to the roof it will cast a nice elliptical shadow on sloped roofs so you know where to cut.

Nice install. Here's a tip for cutting round holes in sloped surfaces. You need to cut oval to get the same clearance around the pipe, because your string changes length in relation to level as you rotate on the angle of the roof. Bet the chimney was tighter on the top/bottom than the sides. Mark the ceiling straight up from the edges of the pipe.

Having put 2 Vermont Castings in a pole barn, the chimney must have the Silkirk (unless you're using the other brand) Adjustable Ceiling Bracket JSC6RS. It hold the chimney up. Then the ceiling mount box, supports the black wall pipe. Got to be fairly close to installation code, or your Insurance Company could likely deny a claim. Also, have the insurance co come out and do an inspection, so it is on file. Menards has all the parts. We bought our stoves new, years ago, but the local stove retailer/installer would not do an install because we didn't buy it new from them. Stuck learning a lot on our own. Selkirk has a great tech support/install dept. It is not easy going from a house to a pole barn install. Did go with the Dektite #8 boot instead of the Selkirk, just not the quality expected.

Just as food for thought, if you work on gasoline equipment in your shop, the stove should be setup 18-20 off the ground, to keep from igniting gasoline fumes.. This is code for natural gas water heaters installed in garages.. Just don't want to see anyone get hurt.. Great job..

Should of held a piece of pipe up there. If your roof is angled your hole will not be a perfect circle, it will be an elliptical cutout. Hold a pipe straight up with the "wall" side edge touching the roof (leaving the opposite side will be a couple inches from the roof). Make your guide marks from that.

Sadly I'm stuck at finding a stovepipe to chimney adapter as my outer wall for the chimney is 10inch triple wall. The companies just tell me i must frame it in. 😂 no way I'm changing or adding structural.

Wood stove firebox should be raised 18” off the ground when installed in a garage or shop in case you spill flammable liquids and should also be in a location where it cannot be hit by a vehicle, especially since the stove is holding up the chimney(not to code)Also the rubber flashing is not rated for the high heat that a wood stove gives off. I understand this is a “agricultural situation” but this is fire and codes are there to keep you and your family safe. I could go on about what is not to code but I would just like to say get it professionally done. Stay safe.
@StoneyRidgeFarmer

The pipe is supported up on the roof.....the rubber gasket is high heat and yep..it's made for this application. I hear ya on the 18 inches off the ground...hit by a vehicle? Yep..all that you're saying makes perfect sense. We're talking about a free wood stove someone gave me...in an agricultural building....I'll take your advice when we build our big shop

WOW really nice video Josh and you really make it all look pretty easy too : ), can you tell where you found the orange cone gasket thingy ? i am getting ready to install a woodstove in my shop because for the past 5 years i have been working in a snowmobile suit because o fthe cold, so i built a nice riding lawnmower for a guy and traded him for a like new woodstove , just today i got a ladder so i can finally reach the roof and now after watching your cool nice video i am excited to do mine and get a fire going. Where i am people are constantly throwing out nice hardwood pallets so it will be free firewood for me just a little work cutting them up is all. Well thank you very much and hey can you make a video showing your fire in your stove ? that would be really cool, have a nice day Josh, hope your stove is keeping you and your friends warm during the cold, i'd also love to know your "pot of beans" recipe : ), i used to have a 4 bean soup that was great with corn bread. !!

Great video. I think my new building in KY is the same as yours. Was your's from Carolina Carport? 30' x 60'. Great building and a great value. I was wondering if that angle across your roof near the edge is a snow break. Where did you get it? I also insulated the roof of my building to reduce/eliminate the condensation. I did 2/3 of the roof with the rolls of radiant barrier insulation. I ran out in the middle and could not get more locally so I then finished with 1/2" foam board radiant barrier from Lowes. I cut chipboard into strips and screwed them to the runners between the roof trusses and then stapled the radiant barrier to the chip board. Worked well until the ends at the eves where I could not get a stapler into . The foam board was much easier and looked better at the end. Cost was about the same for the material, but installation was much easier with the foam board. Just used fender washer and screws to attach to the chip board. I've not seen any condensation since installing the insulation.
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 6 жыл бұрын
So yes...Carolina carports is where I got my building....so as for the "snow breaks" there is a company around here that makes/shapes roofing and trim in all the colors that carolina carports makes...there are also little tabs you can put on the building...might have to do a bit of leg work to find a local source....I'll be insulating my building sooner or later...have a "water" issue right now...water coming up form behind the building during major storms...gotta get that fixed and then I'll get rocking with some insulation....actually considering an expansion of the building...extending it to twice the length and putting in one more door and a workout room inside...we shall see

Awesome and informative video (never to long or informative) but the gasket landing on the roof at the 13:15 mark made me laugh pretty damn hard! Instead of that RTV sealant some RV roof seam EPDM calk or even caulk used for OTR trailers with aluminum roofs would be a much better and more durable choice.

Nothing like having a wood stove in the shop. I put one in last fall just before it got cold, and it's been great. I got a rusty old Vogelzang box stove (not the smallest but the next size up), for practically free at a yard sale (I sold the other stuff I got as part of the deal). I used up 3 Horrible Freight cup brushes on it, painted her up, and replaced all of the hardware with brass. She's a beaut! I used one of those silicone boots, too, but I just used a regular rain cap, or hat, or whatever they are called. I think I'm related to that Mexican drug lord, but they call me El Cheapo, not El Chapo.

Awesome thanks! How well does it heat in 30 degree weather? Does it bring the temperature up enough to work comfortably?

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer thanks! Mine isn't either. Same size too. I'd rather have that than the barrel stove. I didn't think it would be enough. Great data point

What adapter was used to connect the insulated pipe to the single wall? I need to connect Duravent single wall to a triple wall, but I cant find useful info. I'm using this video as my guide

The smoke pipe joints are backwards, the crimps should be in direction of air flow! Otherwise they leak co2! Proper mechanical connection! My 20 by 30 metal shop went up last week. Agricultural lol

Have you put insulation in the shop yet? Seems like that should have been the first step. What size shop is that? Im about to get one built and im having them do the 1/4 inch double bubble throughout.

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer bro if i could I would go 50x60 or bigger but with being on just 16 acres I don't really need it. Family farm that is 153 acres has that size. Im doing a 30x45x16 enclosed with a 26ft overhang and a 16x71 lean to. Should shelter all my stuff and give me a decent shop. I'm in the process of starting a farm with goats, pigs, rabbits, and chickens. Have cows at the family farm. No money in them.

Why no support inside the building up near the ceiling for the heavy double wall pipe? It would be a disaster if for any reason that thin black smoke pipe deteriorated and all that weight came crashing down inside the building!
