In this video, I demonstrate how to replace the hard disk / install an SSD in a Dell Inspiron i3531-1200BK Laptop.
Check out my other videos about this laptop:

Here's the SSD I used. It is available in 512GB, 256GB, and 128GB.

The Samsung 850 EVO is another popular SSD. It is available in 1TB, 500GB, 250GB, and 120GB.

Don't know what to do with your old hard disk? Turn it into an external drive with an enclosure like this one. No tools, drivers, or power brick required.

Thank you for the video! I was able to install a SAN Disk ssd on a dell 15R laptop. My HDD didn't have a metal cage, but the ssd came with a spacer which I had to use to fit it in place. After installation, I got a Checking media (fail)" ON BOOT. Followed the following step to resolve it. Hope it helps someone facing the same issue. 1. Hit F2 right when the Dell Logo pops up. 2. Use your arrow keys to move to the tab named "Boot" 3. Select, with the arrow keys so that the text named "UEFI Boot" is White colored in font. 4. Navigate to the bottom, where it should say Windows Boot Manager 5. Hit F5 or 56, to move it up and down the list until you get the settings to be like: Windows Boot Manager UEFI Onboard LAN IPv4 UEFI Onboard LAN IPv6 6. Hit F10, and your system will reboot, without that annoying message showing up. Show less

Thanks for the vid. It appears fairly easy to replace the hard drive with SSD, but then what happens when it is booted for the first time? How do I re-install windows?
@RichReviews
@RichReviews 9 жыл бұрын
Joe Balbona Well, you can either reinstall Windows from a DVD or thumb drive after putting in the SSD, or you can just clone your old drive onto the new one, which is what I did. First, I put the SSD into the external enclosure I linked to in the description below the video. Super easy - doesn't even require a screwdriver. Then I cloned the contents of the original drive onto the SSD. Then I installed the SSD as seen in the video. The Crucial SSD I used comes with a free copy of a cloning program called Acronis True Image, but I used a free open source program called Clonezilla instead after deciding True Image was junk. The Samsung SSD I linked to in the video description also comes with a free copy of a cloning program, but I haven't tried it.

Does a SSD only make programs boot up faster or does it also improve speed performance like RAM does?
@RichReviews
@RichReviews 8 жыл бұрын
+Robert Salgado An SSD will make all disk accesses much faster. Opening programs is just one example of something that accesses the disk.

Hi Rich, How did you transfer the content from original hard drive to SSD? Can you describe the procedure you followed? Thanks,

Rich Reviews Thank you for reply. I managed to copy all the content including the OS from original drive to SSD. Trick was not to let laptop reboot at the end of copy process. When that happened windows from the new SSD will get into recovery mode corrupting boot. So once SSD is replaced in the laptop it would not boot. At the end of copy process when laptop was about to reboot, I interrupted the process by powering off the external enclosure and powering off laptop. Replaced the new SSD into the laptop. Laptop rebooted with OS from laptop. :) BTW. Thank you for posting such informative video!

i have question? did the SSD and Hard Drive pins are same?
@RichReviews
@RichReviews 8 жыл бұрын
+PewDieAsh Yes, the pins are the same since both drives have a SATA connector.

I have an inspiron 7720 with a 32GB SSD and am planning on replacing it due to an error showing up in the Intel Disc Management system indicating it has failed. I am pretty sure there is a RAID factory set up for this drive and was hoping that if I do the physical replacement that the RAID will take care of rebuilding of the new drive. Do you know if that is how the RAID is set-up from the factory?
@RichReviews
@RichReviews 9 жыл бұрын
Ed Grillo First let me clarify that the Inspiron 7720 *is a completely different computer* than the one in this video, so *the information in this answer has nothing to do with the Inspiron i3531-1200BK*. OK, sorry. Didn't want to confuse anyone. Now back to your question. Replacing a disk in a RAID configuration other than RAID 0 (which isn't really RAID IMO since it's not redundant) will normally trigger rebuilding of the drive. The Inspiron 7720 doesn't use RAID though. Instead, the 32GB SSD is used as a cache to speed up access to frequently used files on the spinning disk.

Rich Reviews Thanks Rich.... I knew about the difference in models just trying to see if you by chance knew about the configuration. Appreciate the reply, so based on what you said above, there really isnt anything on that SSD drive and I can just swap it out right? Thanks in advance.

Ed Grillo Here's a Dell support page that will tell you what you need to know about swapping out the cache drive in your Inspiron 7720. For any one else reading this, please note that *this information has nothing to do with the Inspiron i3531-1200BK in this video.* www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/545793/en?c=us&s=dhs&cs=19&l=en

is there anything you need to do before you put in the solid state drive?
@RichReviews
@RichReviews 9 жыл бұрын
gerald cerda Good question. Unless you want to make a clean start by reinstalling Windows and everything else onto the new SSD, you'll want to clone the old drive onto the SSD as I described in responses to a few other comments in this thread.

Did you use the Samsung clone software or something else? I couldn't get their software to work.
@RichReviews

Will Wall Since it was included free with the Crucial SSD I used, I tried Acronis True Image, but I decided it was junk. In the end I used a free and open source program called Clonezilla. I have not tried the Samsung clone software.

The difference is that the read/write speed will be faster, meaning that you will see that the computer will boot quicker, and programs will load faster as well.

Chumbe Salinas How did you copy all the software from original 500GB HDD? I am trying to install 128GB SSD but unsuccessful so far. I tried to use Acronis 2014 that came with Crucial SSD, however the live cd does not recognize the externally connected original HDD in USB enclosure. I tried Clonezilla but could not copy. What process did you follow to copy original software on new SSD?
