when keying in the mortar with the flat side of the trowel how thick is the layer thats being applied? ive seen another video where you installed tile on a concrete floor without using the uncoupling membrane but reading the comments you say is best to always use the membrane Whats the reason for not using it on a concrete floor? i am a new subscriber and handyman i appreciate your thoroughness in each of your videos. you are a natural teacher

You would do the exact same thing here is the floor underneath was concrete instead of plywood?

Yes, I sure would, in case the concrete cracks for some reason. If you don’t the crack in the concrete would eventually transfer to the tile.

are you using modified mortar on top of the membrane when laying the tile?

So the tile work should be "unmodified"? Both Menards and Lowes only have one bag of unmodified mortar, the rest is polymer mixed. Everyone on KZfaq says to use unmodified for the final tile job.

What happens if you install the membranes upside down? Any ideas?

You would void the warranty on the installation from the manufacturer.

Great video, Mr. Edward! After watching a couple of videos regarding Ditra, I saw that people decide to waterproof the bottoms of the walls as well, to prevent water damage in the bathrooms. I was wondering what is your opinion regarding this. Thank you.

Thanks you! That’s a great question! I believe that waterproofing a tub or shower enclosure is definitely a must. Grout isn’t waterproof. Keeping the wallboard substrate dry is definitely key to a longer lasting and healthier job. If people are recommending to waterproof walls in a bathroom where it isn’t anywhere near the shower or bath, that would make absolutely no sense. I can’t see any reason to do so. In regards to shluter products I think they are over rated and just a brand that has great marketing and everyone is obsessed about it. There are tons of manufacturers out there that make the same products for a lot less the cost. We have a video on how to waterproof shower enclosure that’s really easy for the diyer. @@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639 Thank you for your response! The project that I am looking to start is tiling the laundry room, located on the second floor. I saw the following video, where the base of the walls have been waterproofed: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/freRlsmLuLaUgXk.html. Also have a small (1/2") drain pipe meant to route the water collected in the drain pan; am thinking about turning it into a floor drain to collect the water generated from any potential leak.

@@gtnalexandru My pleasure! Thanks for sharing the link. If your going to be re doing your laundry room, I would recommend using the green or blue drywall where the sink and washer are going to be it will last longer than regular drywall. The drain is a great idea! If you can put a 2 inch pipe for the floor 3” floor drain. Thats actually what our building code is requiring in new laundry remodels here in Canada. Just don’t forget to put in a p trap in the floor and you will also need a primer from the laundry faucet to keep the trap filled with water. Keep this in mind when you buy the faucet for the laundry sink. The faucet should have a primer function. Its a good thing that you mentioned the drain, because it is a brilliant idea. Here is a link to which drain I’m talking about amzn.to/3neZ4q2. To be honest I would hire a good licensed plumber to do this, he will know exactly what I’m talking about. @@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639 Thank you for the quick and thorough response, Mr. Edward! I am in US; will research what the building code mandates. There is no faucet in the laundry room, just the cold & hot water source and washing machine drain (in the wall) and the small 1/2" diameter pipe in the floor for hooking up the drain pan.

@@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639 As I keep researching before laying out tiles in my bathrooms, I saw that this video waterproofed the walls by applying the Kerdi band at the bottom of the walls and thus covered the space that is normally supposed to act like like a buffer for expansion and contraction.
