diyforknuckleheads.com How to Install Baseboards / Skirting Boards. How to do a coped corner on baseboards for an internal corner.....if you now what l mean :-)
G'day Knuckleheads, Uncle Knackers here and welcome to Ep 37 in my Owner Builder Series. I'm now deep into the fix-out which includes things like installing the baseboards / skirting boards, architraves, doors etc. In this video we look at installing the baseboards on a straight run with a demonstration of how to correctly join two bits of baseboard / skirting board on an internal corner by performing a procedure called coping. Check it out and let me know what you think...

Never done coped corners before, always 45's, and this is easier and looks better, especially on my old place that has no straight walls. Cheers mate, thanks for putting in all the time and effort on these vids and keep em coming.

That's a top tip to find the studs below the finished line. That knocking doesn't really do it for me! I actually used a paper clip to locate my studs. I poked the paper clip into the hole I had just drilled to confirm there was actual wood where I had just screwed - top tip knackers!! And to be honest, once I'd located my first stud on each run, the rest were at 400mm centres. So I marked 400mm on a scrap of wood, drilled and checked - top tip knackers!!! Easy Peasy!! :)

Great video, I really enjoyed it! One extra thing you could do before you do the coping cut (so, once the first board is in place): supposing the first piece doesn’t stand perfectly vertical and at 90 degrees to the floor? Take a sliding bevel or angle finder and measure the angle that it DOES hit the floor at, set your mitre saw (did you call it a drop saw?) to that angle on the base scale, THEN tip over to 45 degree on your tilt and make the cut and carry on as per the video. No mitre saw? Measure the angle that the first piece leans against the wall on your sliding bevel (that’s what we call them in the UK, there are loads of different names) and lock it, hold the thick part against the bottom edge of your next piece of board and draw a fine pencil line up the thinner piece of the sliding bevel. That marks the angle onto your next piece of board. Then get a scrap piece of the board and hold its edge down so the straight section follows the line (mimicking the first piece of board effectively). Draw around it with a fine pencil, then do your coping cut using hand tools - you could practice on a scrap piece first. That extra step will give you a precise fit under any circumstances, but if you know your first piece is perfectly at right angles to the floor then you can skip that step completely! Hope that helps someone, sorry it’s a long read. Best wishes to all and again - great video! Matt, UK

The solution to all this coping stuff and to avoid cost is to use 1x2s and 1x3s . To avoid gapping, drive a screw into the baseboard at 45 degrees so as to put the second piece into compression at the joint and slather with caulking. Then run a sander along the bare edge to knock off the sharp edges. I didn't bother with any baseboards as I live in a mud and wattle hut.

Shane what is the going rate for the fix out guys here in Aus say if you are working for Masterton or these type of builders i want to get into it any suggestions
@diyforknuckleheads
@diyforknuckleheads 7 жыл бұрын
Anthony, the project builders ( like Masterton ) all have their own rates for the various jobs., such as a certain amount to hang a door, or a meterage rate for the arcs and skirts so it's a bit difficult to pin point a fix out rate. Subbies working for everyday buiders usually charge around the 60.00 an hour for fix out work. Good luck with it!

Top work knackers, I built my house almost a year ago and the builder did a 90 deg angle joint not a coping joint. I really wished they did the coping joint as mine look so bad compared to yours.

Good video! Not sure if I would liquid nail all my base, but to each his or her own. Also, it's not a bad idea to consider a cope down the flat edge as well, in case the wall is not straight. This way, the edge of the entire piece is a knife edge and can butt tight I'm just being OCD, great video
@diyforknuckleheads

Thanks for the feedback Allen. The reason l glue the baseboard is that l'm sick and tired of seeing baseboards after they've been installed for a year or so and seeing that they've come away from the wall between the studs which causes the caulk to crack and you're left with a nasty looking edge. Cheers mate and thanks for watching.

Hi uncle K, do you always work around a room from the door frame clockwise, or does it not matter? What is the difference between cutting the board 45 degrees (as you did in this video) and 45 degrees as a mitre (if that makes sense?) Is the end result still the same?

Cheers enjoyed the video. Do you not find that if you use the chop saw to cut the face of the scribe with out a back cut that if the wall is over 90° that there will be a gap. I always use a hand saw and put a back cut just incase.

Great time Shane. What sized finishing nails are you using for the archs and skirting? About to start mine.
@diyforknuckleheads
@diyforknuckleheads 4 жыл бұрын
Mate, 40mm is a pretty good size. 50mm are also good but can be a bit tricky on the thinner edge of the arch with the extra length having a greater chance of shooting out the surface of the jamb which is what you don't want to happen. Anything greater than 50 and there's a chance of hitting a pipe or electrical cable. Good Luck 👍👍

I usually put a light pencil mark on the wall a bit higher than the baseboard. Did you do that, or how did you find the studs with the baseboard in place? Was that plastic clad baseboard or just prefinished?

Well, my first attempt at this today failed in that the thin top piece broke off when I attempted the first cut along that part. Looks like I went in too close with the saw. Plus I couldn't actually get the coping saw to go around the corner either, and broke off some more bits, so I just did many little thin cross cuts and sawed those off. Looked like a dogs breakfast underneath. Giving it another try. Thankfully, I did take into account some failed attempts and bought an extra skirting board to practice with.

Great video mate. Question - when the coped board sits on top of the other board, is it normal for it to have a 1mm or gap on the bottom given it is basically slightly sitting on top of top of the other board?
@diyforknuckleheads
@diyforknuckleheads 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks G Man 👍 Because the coped part that sits on top is very thin, you can just squish it down a little to touch the floor. No-one would pick it up. Thanks for watching mate 👍🇦🇺😁

Being watching videos on how to install skirting board and yours explains it the best and the simplest.I want to do the skirting boards in my living room so I hope I don't stuff it all up. What is that machine you used to cut the skirting board, i might have to hire one. Are they difficult to use?
@diyforknuckleheads
@diyforknuckleheads 5 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for that, glad you liked the video. The machine is a mitre saw that you can hire ...in actual fact you could almost buy a cheap one for about the same cost of a hire....Ozito make a cheap one that is available from Bunnings. You just need to make sure that the machine you get can cut to the depth that you require. Most skirting boards on a standard house are 90mm high so just make sure the machine has a cutting depth of 90mm. Good luck with it and just remember...the trick is to take your time. Cheers..PS. They are easy to use 👍😁

What gauge are you using? Wouldn't "proud" nails be needed along the entire base to keep from the bottom turning in?
@diyforknuckleheads
@diyforknuckleheads 5 жыл бұрын
My guns a 16 gauge bradder. The reason for the corner nail is that you need the corner to be as close to a 90 degree angle as possible to get a tight fit with the adjoining board.
