I demonstrate how to install a frost plug in a 400 SBC. This would be the same for a 350 SBC or any other engine, the process is the same, only the size of the plug may change.

Indian head sealant is good for freeze/frost plugs.

I've used it for years. It is good stuff and I love the smell of it.

Hey AG, Tim here, not that important, but we use permatex #2 on all freeze/frost/core plugs......we found it to seal up a bit better when temps fluctuate more drasticaly...........just a thought

Thanks Tim, I have used other sealants as well with good results. AG

wish people would quit calling these freeze plugs.....They are core plugs to remove the sand from the casting process...

There is a channel on here out of northern Alberta that the guy has a Smokey & The Bandit Firebird. He is sending the engine to the southern states for a build from "The" place for Pontiac engines. I think he is wasting a good percentage of his money, as there are many very capable machinists & builders right here in Canada as demonstrated at Gold's Garage!!

So, it’s not his property to do with as he pleases? I’m sure that you’re taking about him sending to Butler , yes? I don’t bitch when I need used oem bike parts and only seller is in Canada . 🤦♂️
@alleyoop12344 ай бұрын
@@jamessharp9790 And I don't bitch when all the parts I buy for any of my old vehicles come from the US either. I stand my ground in saying I believe he is wasting his hard earned money, in shipping if nothing else. He CAN get the same quality north of the 49th... And no, I did not say anything about him doing with his money as he pleases...as of course that goes without saying.

Nice. How tight is tight with pipe plugs? People have cracked some expensive things installing them.
@goldsgarage82363 ай бұрын
The GM performance manual for the CT400 crate engine specifies 15ft.lb. for the pipe plugs.AG

I would like to see some instruction on how you install the rear cam plug. How to get it in far enough but not too deep.
@patrickwendling67594 ай бұрын
I alway drive the plug in until it just kisses the cam then with aead soft hammer tap the front of the cam driving the plug back about .020.. good luck

What sealant do you use on the frost plugs?
@patrickwendling67594 ай бұрын
The factory do not use any sealant, and the factory uses steel not brass, brass is softer and seals better and doesn't rust, that said any sealant just helps you sleep at night, pipe dope, silicon both work well. Good luck

Indian head shellac is a good choice. Silicone is too slippery.

Do 400 sbc’s have 2 or 4 bolt mains? I was thinking 2 since they never came from the factory in a high perf version.
@Comet-hn3gm4 ай бұрын
Some had 4 bolt mains like a 350. Many opinions if they were stronger or not.
@goldsgarage82363 ай бұрын
The 400's with 2 core plugs on each side are 2 bolt mains and the ones with 3 core plugs are 4 bolt main. Hope this helps to identify. AG

The problem with using the pipe plugs that come in the kit, they are very soft, and with the internal allen are very easy to round off the hex, So I always buy a box of machine shop plugs with a 9/16 hex. You will never ever have a problem getting then out.
@goldsgarage82363 ай бұрын
Good tip Racer. i think i will start doing that. AG

What did you use for sealant? Is it silicon?
@Comet-hn3gm4 ай бұрын
Indian head shellac is a very good sealant for this application. If there is much distortion of the plug upon installation, silicone can cause it to slip or move easier.

I thought the same until I froze my block started it up and the block broke cracked between casting plugs and by the lifter’s only ran for about 15 second’s anyway the supposed freeze plugs never moved so they’re called casting plugs 🤪

Core plugs. Nothing to do with frost or freeze.
@goldsgarage82363 ай бұрын
Thanks Billy, you are technically correct, however the vendors like Mr. Gasket and Amazon call them Freeze plugs. AG.

Why do you hate that socket ? Core plugs should be driven in from the outer edge/rim with the correct tool. The correct tools have been available for as long as you have been alive. The way you showed distorts the plug causing less tension on the outer diameter and a potential leak. I have seen many fail from people using this method. Any engine worth doing should be worth the minor cost of the correct tool.

OK, i was just trying to help people that don't have one. They are about $40, and you need one fer every size. i will demonstrate installing core plugs with the correct tool in a future video. AG

@@goldsgarage8236 Nice. I know you want to teach, and I appreciate that. Setting high standards is good, because if people don't have or can't get what they need, they will find a way to improvise on their own. Show the right way and have a clear conscience, when improvising doesn't work.
