In this video we are going to install full side art on an Atari Quantum Arcade Game. We are going to use the "wet method" using Rapid Tac. The kickplate was removed prior to installation and I am installing this over laminate for a super smooth finish. After we install the artwork we will trim it with a razor blade.

Great job man! I think the issue you had was more with the brittleness of the vinyl than the fact that it was full side art. You seemed to handle the alignment quite well. Looks great and can't wait to see it finished!

A little trick a friend of mine that does signage taught me, when you have straight print that isn't clear laminated, use the paper you peel off to protect the ink and the print while you are using the squeegee and the roller. I keep a large piece around just for that purpose. Also, if you have a large bubble like the one that caused you to lose the paint, use an exacto and just barely prick the center of the bubble. It lets out the air that causes the damage. You (or anyone else) will never be able to see it.

Windex works fine in place of Rapid Tac. I applied sideart with Windex 10 years ago and it's still perfect; no air bubbles and it's perfectly adhered. The advantage of Windex is that it's cheaper and you can buy it anywhere; most people probably already have some onhand.

John I have a potential fix for your white bubble hole (rip) in your left side art... 1) Using a super fine grit (polish grade) sandpaper, knock off the loose vinyl around the edges of the white hole and feather it all out nice and smooth 2) Mask out the entire blue triangle and paint it using as close a color match as possible. If you can get close to the surrounding gloss level in the original artwork and you are able to polish the hole down smooth enough it should be totally undetectable when finished. Trying to color match the original triangle and touching up just the hole is likely to be virtually impossible. Just a thought. If you do this you might want to consider using brown paint instead of blue and doing it on both sides to make this a truly unique JOHN creation. Might even increase the value of the unit.. ;-)LOVE YOUR WORK MAN!!! GL!

For the bubble you popped try and do some digging and find the pantone number for the exact colour match. The printers should have it. Also to fix your old cam use some old IDE Hard Drive cable, tear it into single strands an have a go at bridging the ribbon cable with soldering. U maybe able to get it working just to get the video off it and maybe it would make a great mid week video. All the best John.

The tears in the artwork that happened during installation are Phoenix Arcade's fault. They wouldn't have happened had there been premask on the artwork, and there's no excuse for not putting premask on such expensive sideart.

You should have had Rich send you a little bit of the original ink he used so you could use it to touch up that popped air bubble (I don't know what you ended up doing about it because I'm still watching). Another option would be to have him print you a triangular shaped piece of vinyl in that color that you could stick over that whole section.
@ThisOldGame

Hey John good video, Ill check I might have some left over ink from that printing I can send you to do the touch up. The trick to avoid that mishap when your squegeeing that down go little slower when your working your way up and dont leave ANY bubbles behind

Also I believe the vinyl was getting old. Even 3m (which is the best) is only a 5-7 year exterior sign grade product. But that is outside in the elements. On your machine in the basement expect much longer life. However it also does not age well just sitting around on the roll like it did.

Next time you're faced with such a part, put the art work down face up first, then put the piece on top (also, face up). Do your measurement (because then you can see it perfectly aligned) and mark them with a sharpie (the non permanent ones, Edding has two styles you can clean with water, very good, doesn't smudge at all) and reverse the positions. Centering the art work this way is a piece of cake and whenever i'm faced with putting decals and things similar i always try to cheat it that way. Worst case scenario, where you can't actually remove the part from the cabinet, get a sheet of paper that's the same size with the art work, then put it over a window and transfer the important lines to it, you can then mangle that piece of paper however you desire and at the end, you'll have the perfect spots where to place your artwork in one go, you just need to transfer those on the art work in the reverse of the previous operation. One other method (where it's applicable) that really is helpful when you're doing art work over holes and you need to match them is to take very thin sewing needles (super cheap packs of ten or more on Amazon or eBay) and poke them in the art work at the very edge of the art (where the hole would go). Have like 4 of them in a + pattern. That done, you can then simply shove the art work over the holes with those needles in place. And the last method is this one and by far it's the simplest, but only when your decal backing paper allows it (sometimes they use that really hard to write on almost plastic like paper or sometimes they use black paper with white lines, especially 3M) is to once again take your art work and put it (facing away from you) on the window and then trace the art work's key design elements on the back. Once you've done that, go back to your part and simply, sitting on the other side you'd normally sit on, apply your art work by seeing the cheat marks you've made. I tell you, it saves a metric crap ton of work doing things like this. I was passed these methods as well, before i'd measure and waste hours trying to get it perfect, no point when you can alter the playing field in your favor. Also, i think 3M (at least) allows for custom backing paper. I'm wondering, why for, such a critical piece like that front decal, the guys at the reproduction shop didn't ask for that. I mean, it's only 10 dollars (at worst, since it's just lines) extra.
@aserta
@aserta 8 жыл бұрын
Also, you can get colored paint pens filled with the scanned colors to cover any dings or scratches. If you ask them to give you diluted paint in the pen (or even take out half and fill it with paint thinner) you can apply very thin coats that nobody will ever notice unless they glue their faces to your cabinet. Don't bother buying the large paint markers, go for a thin something between 3 mm to 5 mm tip.

Watching John put full length side art onto a cabinet is one of the most intense things I've ever seen. Also not sure I'm feeling this camera yet. Colors seem a little washed out or the whole image has somewhat of a blur to it. Not sure if that was youtube chewing it up on upload or what. Also seems to have a slight strobe like effect on motion. But really I think the older camera has a better image. Though if you get both cameras working again, be a bit more editing but having two sets of footage should make shots when you're working inside the cabinet go much easier.
@Johnsarcade
@Johnsarcade 8 жыл бұрын
+Mihoshi Productions That's interesting. I think the colors on this one are a little more natural. I A/B'd the new camera with the old during the basement table scene and you can tell the reds are more amped on the old camera. Not in a natural way. My face is way more red with the old camera. Dunno... on paper this camera should be better. Time will tell.
@mihoshiproductions9809
@mihoshiproductions9809 8 жыл бұрын
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech That might be what I'm used to all the colors looking warmer. Though that's what i was thinking with this camera is that all the colors look warmer. LOL. Though aside from that and the slight strobe effect the video isn't bad but I can't really tell if that's youtube shenanigans or if anyone else sees it other then me and it's something on my end.

I bought the Ms Pac art off of PhoenixArcade and I was extremely disappointed with it. Not only did the quality feel cheap, but the scale of everything was off, and I had the same issue as John, where there wasn't enough vinyl to properly position things. I would get Ms Pac's fist right where it needed to be on the front side of the cab, and then the back side wasn't even reaching. I can't recommend using PhoenixArcade for vinyl art... In fact, the guy basically banned me from shopping with him and he was generally unpleasant to deal with when I got a refund for the art. He tried to blame my incompetence with applying the art but no amount of competence is going to magically make the art scaled properly and the vinyl big enough to properly apply to the cab.
@Johnsarcade
@Johnsarcade 8 жыл бұрын
The thing is, Phoenix Arcade uses various sources for printing. This art I used here was from the original Atari Films and done by Rich at This Old Game. So, the quality was good. Yes, it is annoying the kickplate was a little short but it worked out fine. I have ordered TONS of art from Phoenix and ToG. Sorry to hear you had issues. But, Ms. Pac should have been stenciled so that's not *really* original. I think some late model Ms. Pacs had vinyl but really they are all stenciled.
@k0nidias
@k0nidias 8 жыл бұрын
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech I later learned that the Ms Pac art that's being sold isn't really meant to match the original stenciled scale and artwork... which... is sort of baffling to me. I mean I guess it matches the late model vinyl art Ms Pacs? I've found a guy who does Ms Pac vinyl that matches exactly to the original stencil art... and normally I wouldn't vinyl a Ms Pac if I had the option, but I live in an apartment with no place to really go about painting/stenciling a full cabinet. My only real option is to just apply vinyl so that's why I went that route. Google joe szabo arcade to find his FB page. His work is amazing.

John, great video, Curious the differences of Rapid Tac and a bottle of soapy water to apply decals? I put the game blades on the sides of the cabinet of the pinball machines using soapy water. Video here for reference : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bNJ5pJVzuqixnY0.html The soapy water gives you tons of time to lift and adhere the decals on the cabinet. I was just wondering if you have tried both methods using either soapy water or Rapid Tac. If Rapid Tac is that much better I will invest in a bottle of it. Thanks John.
