After watching a bunch of videos on how to install heated grips on my 2014 Harley Street Glide Special, I decided to make a video to simplify the install. Its extremely easy to do, and my step by step video shows it very clearly.

Outstanding explanation. Have replaced many and you did exactly what needs to be done other than having Harley towels and table to place the cowling and windshield on. Well done young man

I've watched several of the "professional" videos on doing this and I must say yours is the one that really gave me a grasp on how to do this. I'm just replacing some worn out heated grips on my 2014 FLHTK and I'm ready now. I've been wrenching on shovelheads and panheads for 40 years but really don't do a lot to my Ultra besides regular maintenance. Thanks again for a simple & clear tutorial on doin this particular task.

Your welcome! I went though some videos too. And it always seems like they skip over major details on how to do or find something or they don’t do it correctly at all. So I figured a true “step by step” should be as detailed as possible. Thanks!

@@robbertolino3148 one question, you said the ignition switch did not need to be removed, this right?
@robbertolino3148
@robbertolino3148 2 жыл бұрын
Yep. So turns out that panel is slotted. So you can slide that trim piece back without needing to remove the ignition switch. That was the second set of heated grips I had installed on the same year bike. So you learn a little bit more every time you do it. So during the video I realized you didn’t have to remove the ignition switch. It does give you a little more room though.

Great job! I paid a local Indy to install new bars as I was reluctant to tear my 14 UL apart. They did the bars but returned it with no heat to my grips. Reluctant to take it back your video gave me knowledge and confidence to follow the Indy shop to see if I could spot a mistake. Best I can tell the left was connected directly to the right grip. I disconnected that and reconnected to open connections on the right and left side. Wala, my grips work again. And I know more about my motorcycle. Thank you!

I own an 18 FLTRXS and it looks the same. So happens I bought the same grips. On the Road Glide the power connector is right behind the Gage Cluster. This looks so much easier than on my 13 FLTRX which required the power wire and fuse plus called for an external wire on the left side. Law Abiding Biker has a nice video to modify the left switchpack. Great video guys!

Great video!! Just an update. I'm installing these heated grips (part # 5610034) on my 2019 Tri Glide Ultra. it's a pity that these grips are not stock on their high end bikes and trikes. The two wiring harnesses that Rob points to at about 1:25 into the video are both hanging out in clear sight after taking off the fairing cover. Could not be easier! you definitely don't need the additional harness that HD says you need. Yes, the ignition switch DOES NOT need to be removed. Follow this vid step by step; you'll be glad you did.

@@terryk45 no actually I didn't see a need. The harness that you plug the heated grips into are ignition powered. So if the ignition is off they do not have voltage. I'm sure to be safe you could take the fuse out though (better safe than sorry) I just rarely remove the fuse when I know I'm working on something that only has power when the ignition is on.

Awesome video thanks for doing an amazing job videoing your installation. I’ve got a question though. My 2012 Ultra limited grips stopped working do you think maybe a wire could have come loose or do the grips just go bad after awhile?? Please get back to me with your thoughts as I don’t want to buy something I don’t need.
@robbertolino3148
@robbertolino3148 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not 100% sure on the 2012 bikes. I know the 2014 and up come pre wired. I'm mot sure if the 2012s are different. I'd start by going to the dealer and asking them to give you the parts break down for your OEM grips. That will show you where they plug in. If they plug in similar to the 2014 version. You can unplug them and see if you have power coming to the harness. I do know that heated grips go bad. Some people say they go bad often, others say they last a long time. I've personally never had a set go bad.

Dear Rob. Good video. I must confess I was waiting to "something" to hit your unprotected tank. I'm glad you covered it. I saw on another video, gentleman ran the wires to the hole in the bars and hooked them out with a looped cable tie. This is my question. Do you remember / Is it possible to see / get to the hole in the handlebars under the radio from near the light without tilting the fairing forward? It'd mean you only had to remove the front of the fairing and simplify everything. Kind regards Steve

Steve, thanks! Your right about covering the tank, I don’t make a lot of videos and almost forgot while trying to show what I was doing! It would be a huge bummer to scratch the tank. As for the hole in the bar. I tried to access the hole from inside the fairing. But I couldn’t get to it easily. Also the wiring connectors are stuffed in there as well. For me it was far easier to remove those few bolts and roll the fairing forward a little. Thanks again!

@robbertolino3148 4 жыл бұрын
So if you watch right about 11 mins in the video you can see where i locate the throttle side wire. If you follow the harness coming out of the handle bars you will find the connector, Because the connector comes out of the handle bars on the throttle harness. If you watch all the way from that 11 minutes to 14mins you will see the power connector. It was zip tied to another connector and does have a plug in it that needs to be removed. You can see from the video it is tight up there and there are a lot of wires. So be patient and you will find it. Let me know how you make out!
